Question 1

A machine operator produces the tension T in the control rod by applying the force P to the foot pedal.

(a) Draw the free body diagram (FBD) of the foot pedal shown in the figure below.
(b) If the magnitude of the reaction at pin B is 1.8 kN, determine the permissible magnitude of force P that
will safely carry the reaction at the pin.
(c) Also, calculate the tension T in the control rod assuming that the applied force P is equal to 250 N.

Question 2

A vertical beam is subjected to a force as shown below and so with the connections that are involved. Assume
the beam is statically determinate.

(a) Draw the free body diagram (FBD) and determine the force developed on the link BC
(b) Determine the internal forces (normal force, shear force and bending moment) at point D using:
a. Graphical methods - show all the graphs and make a summary of the results.
b. Method of sections - show the elemental free body diagram to solve for the internal forces
(c) The beam’s cross section is shown to the left. Determine the coordinates (x, y) of the centroid of this
cross section

Question 3

The 2-m-wide rectangular gate is pinned at its center A and is prevented from rotating by the block at B. It can
also be assumed that friction is negligible at the bottom of the gate. Physical constants: 𝜌𝑤 = 1.0 Mg/m3 𝑔 =
9.81 m/s2

(a) Calculate the resultant force caused by hydrostatic pressure on the gate and draw a free body diagram of
the gate.
(b) Determine the force at block located at point B that keeps the gate in static equilibrium.

Question 6

A bar that weighs 4 kg is resting on a wall and the floor as shown in the figure. The coefficient of the static
friction between the bar and the floor is equal to 0.3. Assume the friction between the bar and the wall are
negligible for part (a) and (b).

(a) Take 𝛼 = 20° and determine the magnitude of the friction force exerted on the bar by the floor
(b) Find the maximum angle 𝛼 that will prevent the bar to slip.
(c) Assuming the weight of the bar remains the same but then considering the frictional force acting on
between the wall and the rigid bar. Take the coefficient of friction between the bar and the wall to be
0.3, determine the maximum angle 𝛼 that satisfies the no slip condition.
