I. PURPOSE
The Hazard Waste Management Plan aims to ensure and maintain a safe and secure
environment for the employees and student by implementing proper management of
hazardous waste and materials. It also responds to the compliance requirements of the
DENR EMB rules and regulations on hazardous waste management.
Bicol University College of Engineering Department of Chemical Engineering is
committed to maintain programs, projects, and activities that are designed to prevent and
reduce the risks of hazardous wastes and materials by ensuring its proper handling,
transport, treatment, and disposal.
II. SCOPE
This document defines the procedures for the proper disposal of laboratory waste
and materials generated by the Chemical Engineering Laboratory for the laboratory
experiments involved in the undergraduate thesis. The different hazardous wastes and
materials together with the registered waste code and classification covered by the plan is
listed in the table below:
a. Laboratory Technicians
Monitor the proper storage, labeling, transport, and disposal of accumulated
laboratory hazardous wastes and materials.
Conduct monthly inventory of hazardous wastes that are segregated
according to their registered classification and codes.
Ensure the timely transport/disposal of hazardous waste and materials to the
hazardous waste facility of the Department.
Coordinate with the University for the schedule of the disposal of hazardous
waste materials.
Shall assist personnel during the disposal of the hazardous waste material
to the hazardous waste storage facility.
b. Researchers
Ensure the proper storage and labeling of hazardous wastes and materials in
the laboratory.
Conduct inventory of hazardous wastes generated by research/thesis
according to their registered classifications and codes and submit to the
Laboratory Technician.
Coordinate with the Laboratory Technicians the disposal/transport of the
hazardous waste materials generated to the hazardous waste storage facility.
a. All laboratories disposing hazardous wastes and materials shall follow the NO LABEL,
NO DISPOSAL/COLLECTION Policy.
b. Personnel handling hazardous wastes and materials shall always wear appropriate
personal protective equipment (PPE). The following are the prescribed PPE:
Safety mask/respirator
Chemical Goggles
Rubber Gloves
Hard hat
Safety shoes (closed shoes)
Disposal of Expired Laboratory a. The laboratory Technician shall inform the PCO for the
Reagents proper disposal of expired chemicals ASAP.
Inventory of Hazardous Wastes a. The laboratory Technician shall provide the PCO with a
monthly inventory of the hazardous wastes and materials
stored in the lab.
