The dam is the second of three built by BC Hydro under
the terms of the Columbia River Treaty. At the peak of the
project in the winter of 1966-67, over 1,600 people were
working to build the dam.
The dam is about 52 metres high, with a crest length of
853.4 metres. Of this, 366 metres of the crest length is con-
crete dam and the rest is earth fill dam. The completed
dam structure required a total of 583,000 cubic yards of
concrete, 2.3 million bags of cement, 5,250 tons of con-
crete aggregate and 7,500 tons of structural steel.

 Protecting the wilderness
Friends of the Lardeau River Speaker Series and
Mt Willet Wilderness Forever are delighted that Joe
Foy will be guest speaker at the Argenta Hall, 7 pm
on Wednesday October 23.
Joe Foy is the Co-Executive Director of the Wil-
derness Committee, a Vancouver based wilderness
preservation organization with more than 60,000
supporters from across Canada. Joe has 30 years
of experience working to protect wilderness, old-
growth forests and wildlife habitat areas in BC and
has been one of the Wilderness Committee’s leading
spokespersons.
Joe will discuss and present images of some of the
past and current wilderness committee campaigns
to expand the protected area system on the BC
coast. He will touch on former hard fought wilder-
ness preservation campaigns in the region includ-
ing Stein Valley, Siska Valley, Pinecone Burke, Elaho
Valley and Lost Creek Valley. He will also talk about
current initiatives to secure protection in the Man-
ning Park Donut Hole and for spotted owl habitat
areas. The presentation will include a vision of the
future that includes a protected area system that cov-
ers at least 50% of the land-base and that respects
wildlife habitat including caribou, as well as indig-
enous rights and title.

white tabby neutered male is shy yet social and friendly once he feels
comfortable around you. His fur is so soft to the touch. In his previous home,
he was used to being outdoors all day and then coming back at night. He

Nelson-based sculptor Sherlin Hendrick’s exhibition Caged
is a contemporary ceramic bestiary addressing aspects of
human psychological drama. Appealing to both adults and
children, these creatures portray difficult topics with humour
and facilitate discussion as to what each animal might say.
Inner Rainforest evokes the tranquility and beauty of the
temperate rainforest through the watercolour paintings of
Kaslo based artist Shelley Ross. Inspired by several field trips
to forests in the Kaslo and North Kootenay Lake area, Ross
captures the unique light quality and deep sense of connec-
tion to the earth she finds within the forest.

another Evo that belonged to a volunteer for another team and were
fortunate enough to find the owner who agreed to let us steal a part
from his car until the end of the day” said driver Mark Jennings-Bates.
The team went on to set top six times, finish 12th overall and claim
a podium in Friday night’s regional event! Shortly after the event
the team also found out that co-driver Jackie Jennings-Bates had
unknowingly run the event with a detached retina which required
emergency surgery as soon as they arrived home.
