TPACK Lesson Two

Grade: Ninth

Subject: Algebra I

Lesson: Solving Systems by Substitution

Standards:

• M.HS.14: Solve systems of linear equations exactly and approximately (e.g. with
graphs), focusing on pairs of linear equations in two variables.
• M.HS.15: Recognize the graph of an equations in two variables is a set of all the
solutions plotted in the coordinate plane, often forming a curve (which could be a line).
• M.HS.46: Create equations in two or more variables to represent relationships between
quantities; graph equations, coordinate axes with labels and scales.

Pedagogy: Technology in this lesson will allow students to find the solutions systems of
equations.

Assessment Planning:

• Formative: While students are completing individual work, including the bell ringer and
in-class assignment, I will be walking around the room making sure students are
understanding and on task.
• Summative: Students will complete an exit slip composing of one system that they hand
in at the end of class.

Technology:

• Teacher Use: I will use technology in administering the Kahoot game, in the showing
video for an introduction, and in completing students notes with them using the Elmo.
• Student Use: Students will use iPads to complete the Kahoot game, some when taking
notes, and all will use iPads to complete the in-class assignment.

21st Century Learning:

• Critical Thinking: Students will use critical thinking skills to analyze real-world
situations in their in-class assignment.
• Creativity: Students will use creativity in their notes. They can take them however they
choose, as long as they are taking notes.
• Communication: Students will communicate during discussion about the lesson, with
me when answering questions, and with each other when they need help on their
assignment.
• Collaboration: This lesson doesn’t involve much collaboration between students, but
there is collaboration between students and teacher, as we must cooperate to get through
notes.

Launch/Engagement: Students will be engaged as they love playing games, and engagement
will continue through notes as I make the lesson fun by engaging in their common interests.
Student engagement will also occur in the in-class activity. Students will be on
KhanAcademy.com, where they can learn the lesson more in depth, at their own pace.

Essential Question: How do we solve a system by substitution?

Essential Vocabulary: None

Materials: iPads, Paper, and Pencil

Differentiation: Students with different learning skills will have a variety of ways to address the
lesson, from notes to asking questions, as wells as their learning. With KhanAcademy.com they
will be moving at their own pace.

Modifications/Personalization: Any modifications that may be needed will be addressed, but

currently there are no students who require these assets.

Lesson: Class will begin with a Kahoot bell ringer. After that is completed we will move into the
new lesson, solving systems by substitution. Once notes are completed, students will use their
iPads to complete problems on KhanAcademy.com. After the lesson is complete, students will
follow up with a summative assessment of an exit slip.
