1. Do you think that Morga might have been biased when he wrote the Sucesos
de las Islas Filipinas? Why or why not? Explain your answer.

- Yes, Morga have been biased in how he wrote the Sucesos de las Islas
Filipinas because it is in the fact that he is a Spaniard and it is as if it is
imprinted in their mind that Filipinos was an inferior race, leading to them
thinking that they are superior to us. This leads to Morga being biased in
writing the Sucesos, envisioning the work to become highly
advantageous to their side and showing their superiority. I also think that
his work is biased because I think it is his way to gain more
acknowledgement in his fellowmen and to his country. Also, based on
Rizal’s annotation of Sucesos de las Islas Filipinas, Morga described the
Filipinos salt fish as food that began to decompose and smell but he did
not know that it is ‘bagoong’ and it is not rotten. This is also another
reason to why he is biased because he doesn’t understand our culture
and tradition that leads to him being biased in his own country.

2. Based on Rizal’s annotation of the Sucesos, do you agree with Morga’s

dedication: this small book is a faithful narrative, devoid of any artifice and
ornament regarding the discovery, conquest and conversion of the Philippine
Islands, together with various events which they have taken part specifically
describing their original condition? Why or why not?

- No, I do not agree because Rizal stated that the conversion and
conquest were not as widespread as portrayed because the
missionaries were only successful in conquering only a portion. This states
that there are lies and changes in the Sucesos de las Islas Filipinas of
Morga and his dedication is somewhat wrong to begin with. Also, the
phrase “specifically describing their original condition” is somewhat
arguable because based on Rizal’s annotation, we already have rich
culture and tradition but then they bring many changes in the
Philippines, not just in our old traditions and culture but especially, in
forcing our ancestor in accepting foreign doctrine and cultures that
they did not know to begin with.
