Question 2
POST-OPERATIVE CARE
The postoperative period extends from the time the patient leaves the operating room until
the last follow up visit with the surgeon. This period may be as short as 1 week or as long as
several months. During the postoperative period, nursing care focuses on reestablishing the
patient’s physiologic equilibrium, alleviating pain, preventing complications, and teaching the
patient self-care.
Careful assessment and immediate intervention assist the patient in returning to optimal
function quickly, safely, and as comfortably as possible.
Ongoing care in the community through home care, clinic visits, office visits, or telephone
follow up facilitates an uncomplicated recovery.
The post-operative period can be divided into two phases
1. Immediate post-operative or post anaesthesia phase
2. Later post-operative phase
The nursing management objectives for the patient in the post anesthesia care unit are to
provide care until the patient has recovered from the effects of anesthesia (for example, until
resumption of motor and sensory functions), is oriented, has stable vital signs, and shows no
evidence of hemorrhage or other complications.
This phase includes the period the patient is admitted in the clinical unit till discharge.
