CHAPTER 1

INTRODUCTION

In this chapter the rationale for this study is explained and an overview of the study is

provided. This chapter presents the general information about the study. This contains the Project

Context, Purpose and Description of the Project, Objectives of the Project, Scope and Limitations

of the Project, Significance of the Project, Project Dictionary and Notes.

Project Context

Social media is a category of online exchanging thoughts and ideas which enables people

to create contents. There have been a various views and opinions which recognizes four major

advantages of social media use in higher education. These are enhancing relationship, improving

the learning motivation, offering personalized course material, and developing collaborative

abilities (Wheeler, Yeomans and Wheeler 2008; Rifkin, Longnecker, Leach and Ortia, 2009).

In this day, we are throwing too much time in using social media like posting some

pictures and videos, and staying online on our social media sites such as Facebook, Twitter,

Instagram, Snapchat, Tiktok and others. Social media is a web-based site that allows people to

interact with each other by sharing and receiving information and content quickly. Some students

are updating their feed every hour, while some of them are interested in what others doing.

According to Tara Heffner (2018), using social media to cope with academic frustrations can be a

good outlet, especially if the student is connecting with another student that is having a same

problem. Social media allows students to discuss class material via social media as well as help

them network. Some of the students managed their time well and not letting social media distract

them in studying and only using it as an advantage like interacting with other people, learning

what is going on in the world and for educational purposes.

It is so amazing how social media changed the way we live, but social media is not all just

fun, communicate, and other positive things. Despite all of it, social media can be a disturbance to

the students it may their affect the physical, mental and emotional health. This may affect their

grades, social-skills, and time management skills.

Social media has an impact on student’s physical and mental health. Students may

experience addiction and stress from using social media like spending their time updating their

social media sites, posting their pictures and videos, and chatting their friends through Messenger

while attending classes than to improve their grades and listen to their teachers and sometimes

they choose surfing on the internet than doing their projects, assignments and studying their

lessons. Since social media networks are now accessible to anyone, student’s attention can easily

diverted and lose a lot of time without even noticing.

Social media is affecting the way students look at friendship. According to Patricia

Greenfield (n.d.), teens ideas of friendship have been influenced by their immersion in the on-line

world since other people feel socially supported having large networks of on-line friends.” Some

of the students derive support through likes, re-tweets, heart reactions, comments and shares that

is feedback to their posts. Some of the students base their love of themselves on how people

respond to their pictures. Because of this perception, some of them feel conscious about their self

that can possibly lessen their confidence.

Students prefer communicating through the touch of their fingertips than face-to-face

communication. Students preferred texting, chatting, and video/voice call that make them feel

very connected. Social media has on students cause them to view the relationships they share with

each other differently. It takes away meaningful relationships. Social media changed the insights

having a new friend, but in reality they never know who is behind of it. Students can now change

their persona to escape their reality and create their image online.

On the other hand, social media can cause negative emotions such as the issue of cyber-

bullying. There are also students who are attached to trolling or arguing about anything in social

media. Too much keying on mobile phones, eye strains, fatigue, and lack of exercise are one of

the harmful effects by overdoing, being online, and chatting with friends in social media that is

not good for our health (Alex DiRenzo, 2016)

Social media opens a whole new technological world for students. It is an extremely

useful and powerful tool that has a negative effect that affecting student’s lives. In today’s

generation, social media is hard to detach from ourselves and we cannot run away from that.

Purpose and Description

The proposed study envisioned to know the effects of Social Media to the Academic

Performances of Senior High School students. Pili National High School has a large number of

Senior High School Students that using the Social Media in different ways such as Entertainment

Communication. But some of the students are overusing the use of Social Media. This study may

help the students to have a better understanding about the Social Media that can benefit them to be

aware about the effects of it and how are they going to lessen the usage of using it.

In addition, the significance of this study is to identify the both positive and negative

effects of social media that affecting the student’s academic performances and also, to know the

reasons why some of the students are addicted in using social media. This study will also give

them important information on how social media affects their academic performances and their

health.

CHAPTER 2

METHODOLOGY

This chapter presents the Local and Foreign Literature to provide the reader with a

general overview of this study. This also presents the Synthesis State of the Art and the Gap

Bridge of the study to fully understand the research to be done.

Local Literatures

Social media is continuously changing and improving. In this present day, Social media

sites are adding more technological features and applications where students can use it for posting

their videos, photos, making friends with new people and sharing information, but this Social

Media sites has possibility to affects student’s minds such as stress in spending time in arguing

with other people. But the worst that students can experience right now is online harassment and

cyber-bullying.

In light of the recent discussion about network and privacy issues, it is important to note

that social network push towards becoming a more open, a public network will not affect a

population concerned with worries of “friending” and adjusting the privacy settings on their

photos that will affect the students, of all which combined make up over a quarter of the social

network’s user base (Sarah Perez, 2010).

According to Rejie D. Astrodello (2016), people all over the world have been enjoying

the benefits of using technology nowadays. Barriers of distance, race, religion, and so on can no

longer stop the flow of information and knowledge from other people.

According to Mattel Soliven (2001) In Philippines, Facebook is hands-down the most

popular and most effective networking media, adding that it uses a “persuasive strategy” since it

will persuade people to participate and interact.

Camarines Science Oriented High School, Inc.
Kindergarten • Elementary • Junior High • Senior High
National Highway, New San Roque, Pili, Camarines Sur

The use of Social Media is also helping government offices provides better access to the

public. According to Chairman Ivan John E. Uy (n.d.) social networking sites can be a useful tool

in public delivery services. Social media is an effective platform for information dissemination

and engagement.

According to Chairman Francisco T. Duque III (n.d.), it is about time to engage with the

stakeholders. Filipinos should hear the inspiring stories of outstanding public servants. Being on

Facebook is one way to reach out to the public that they serve.

Social media helps not only students but also other people in order to

communicate. But in this present generation, people make his or her presence felt in virtual

world to validate their existence. They are more on connected through social media networks.

They prefer talking through typing than face-to-face conversation.

Foreign Literatures

Social Media has evolved from its primary function of connecting family and friends

from across the world to becoming ‘sites of information and action’. Similar studies claiming

social media’s potential for organizations that are into forms of activism have also reflected the

same sentiments (Obar 2014).

According to Nicole (2007), students have especially recognized these social media

platforms to be able to contact their peers, share information, reinvent their personas and show-

case their social live.

The usage of social media platforms has affected the hobby of several students.

According to Lewis et al (2008), the influence of social networking sites continues to get

increasingly more pervasive, making actual and virtual realities almost unable to be recognized as

different. Students are talking about what is happening to the virtual world.
Camarines Science Oriented High School, Inc.
Kindergarten • Elementary • Junior High • Senior High
National Highway, New San Roque, Pili, Camarines Sur

According to Karpinski (2009), Social Media specifically Facebook usage is negatively

correlated with Grade Point Averages (GPAs) of its users. Hence, the student’s academic

performance must be managed efficiently without losing sight of all the factors that can be

positively or negatively affect their educational performances.

According to Jeong (2005), the internet addiction is significantly and negatively related to

students’ academic growth as well as the emotional attributes.

Synthesis of State of the Art

Researchers on Foreign and Local Literature presents that Social Media is a useful tool

for communicating, interacting with friends, and content-sharing through Social Media platforms.

Social Media is improving its networking sites in accordance of people who are using it. Some of

the students are enjoying what does the social media offering them and the benefit of this. But

Social Media is not all about positive effects, it also has negative effects that affecting Students

lives. Some of the students that are addicted to social media are facing low academic

performances. They also prefer a friend on a virtual world than a friend in a real world that is why

students are being bullied and harassed through social media.

The local and foreign literatures are both provide information about the negative and

positive effects of using social media in Academic Performances of the Students. The information

from the literatures is based from observations and reality happened to the students.

Gap Bridged of the Study

The study review on Foreign and Local Literature has been made. It was observed that the

uniqueness of this study is it gives information about the positive and negative Effects of Social

Media to the Academic Performances of Senior High School Students. This study can give

information on how to use Social Media properly like do not post photos or videos that can

damage to reputation as a person. This can also give advices on how to manage time in using

Social Media such as having a time limit. If the students cannot imagine their life without Social

Media then it is a sign that they are a victim of addiction to Social Media, over-using of it can

cause sick to the physical and mental health of the students.

Collect the data.

Cite properly and give credit for sources of ideas.

Evaluate the research and revise for errors.

Synthesize the information collected.

Figure 1. Research Process

This figure shows the research process of the chosen research study.

Identify the Problem. Identifying the problem is the most important research process. In this

step, the researchers are going to identify a problem that will be focused by their research. They

will also formulate a question and objectives that needs to be accomplished.

Select the Most Appropriate Investigative Methods for the Research. Researchers are going to

choose a methodology that is appropriate to the research, weather it is quantitative or qualitative.

Camarines Science Oriented High School, Inc.
Kindergarten • Elementary • Junior High • Senior High
National Highway, New San Roque, Pili, Camarines Sur

In this step, it describes the actions to be taken to investigate the research problem and can be

technique to be used in identifying and analyzing the information applied in understanding the

problem.

Collect Data. In this step, the actual study begins. The collection of data is one difficult step in

providing the information needed to answer the research questions. The researchers can collect

the data in form of survey and questionnaires and once the data are collected on the variables, the

researchers are going to analyze and summarize it.

Cite Properly and Give Credit for Sources of Ideas. In this step, the researchers are going to

cite the documents used in the research. It is important to give a proper credit to the authors of the

materials used. It also allows those readers to duplicate the research and locate the sources that

have listed as references.

Evaluate the research and revise for errors. The research needs to be evaluated to know quality

and relevance of the topic. Revising the errors and incorporating the best materials of the research

is a must to make sure that the researchers answered the question clearly.

Synthesize the Information Collected. Synthesizing the information is the finally of the research

process. The analyzed data from the chosen research methodology can be created as a final

product with clear information and polished result. Once it is synthesized, the research can help

the readers for an additional knowledge and it can also criticized by other people.

Research Design

The researchers utilized the Quantitative research method because it is one of the easiest

ways to answer the questions of the study. According to Babbie, Earl R. (2010), Quantitative

Research Method emphasize objective of the measurements and the statistical, mathematical, or

numerical analysis of data collected through questionnaires, and surveys, or by manipulating pre-

existing statistical data using computational techniques.

Research Procedures

The researchers are planning to gather data by conducting survey and questionnaires to

the Senior High School students of Pili National High School and teachers of Camarines Science

Oriented High School. It is to identify the positive and negative effects of Social Media to the

Senior High School Students and how it can affect the Academic Performances of the students.

Data Gathering Tools

Checklist. The researchers will use the checklist to list structure points which needs to be

observed or evaluated. Using this as a data gathering tool is technique, researchers can mark the

presence or absence of criteria or note down short comments about the problem.

Interview. The researchers will use interview as a data gathering instrument to obtain information

or data from the interviewee. It is performed in groups or on a one-on-one basis. The data can be

collected using stenography, video recordings, audio recordings, or written notes. Interviews

differ from direct observation primarily in the nature of the interaction.

Observation. It is one of the best ways to collect data. It can be done directly and indirectly with

the subject knowing or unaware. The researchers will observe for two or three days to determine

the main problem. It is a data collection technique that is performed by monitoring or viewing the

problem.

Questionnaires. The researchers made consisted set of questions regarding the problem and

presented to the respondents for them to answer, in order to come up with the result of the

evaluation.

Surveys. It is the collection of data attained by asking individual questions. The researchers will

use the surveys that are performed through questionnaires. A standard set of questions that

explore a specific topic and collected information about demographics, opinions, attitudes, or

behaviors are used for performing the survey of any specific topic.

The Respondents

To determine the positive and negative effects of Social Media to the Senior High School

Students of Pili National High School and teachers of Camarines Science Oriented High School

and how is it affecting the student’s academic performances, respondents needed. The students

will act as the interviewee in the interview that the researchers conducted. They will also answer

the questionnaires provided by the researchers.

The table below shows the distribution of population which includes the different

categories of respondents, total population and the percentage of population.
