• For crushed stone sands, the permissible limit is increased to 20 %. The 5 % tolerance permitted by 5.2 may, in addition, be

applied to the percentages in light type.

':: i~j:Fiii':!
NOTE; The commonly used proportions of one part of fine aggregate to two parts of coarse aggregate, i.e. a fine aggregate

; percentage'of about 33 % by weight of the total aggregate, are not always the most suitable for making concrete of high strength

. andgooddui.,bility.

. ! To 'makci:co'ncreteof the best quality with the range of aggregates alJo,,"ed,the mix should be suitably designed and the

proportion 'of fine aggregate in the mix should be reduced as the fine aggregate grading becomes finer.

For example, in an investigation using an irregular shaped gravel of 20 mm 'maximum size and a natural sand, concrete mixes of

, , 1 : 6'proportion by weight were found to require the same water/cement ratio and to have the same workability and strength, when
- the sand was graded to lie in the middle of Grading Zones 1,2,3 and 4, if the sand contents were approximately 45, 35, 30 and
- 25"tiiweight respectively.- _ .
The most suitable proportion of fine aggregate to be used for a particular cement/aggregate ratio will, however, depend on the

actual grading,.the particle shape and the surface texture of both the fine and the coarse aggh:gates. In particular, the Correct design

. of the mix becomes increasingly important as the grading of the fine aggregate approaches the coarser limit of Grading Zone 1 or

the finer limit of Grading Zone 4. The suitability of a given fine aggregate for use with the available coarse aggregate should always

be ascertained,' this being especially important in respect of reinforced concrete structures.

4. Quality of aggregates

4.1 General requirements

Aggregates for 'concrete shall consist of any type of coarse aggregate to be combined with any type of
aggregate, or of ail-in aggregate, all as defined in Clause 2. When an aggregate is to be supplied as a mixture
different sizes or types, it shall be produced in such a way as to ensure thorough mixing of the various
component materials and care shall be taken that the proportions are as consistent as possible from consignme
to consignment. The aggregates shall be hard, durable and clean and shall not contain deleterious materials
such a form or in sufficient quantity to affect adversely the strength at any age or the durability of the con ere
including, where applicable, the resistance to frost and to corrosion of the reinforcement. Examples of su
materials are: clay, particularly as an adherent coating; flaky or elongated particles; mica, shale and 01I
laminated materials; coal and other organic impurities; iron pyrites and soluble sulphate salts such as those
calcium, magnesium and sodium. If there is any reason to suspect the presence of harmful impurities, and unl
evidence of general performance is offered which is satisfactory to the purchaser or his representative, any em
shall be determined by a test according to Clause 3 to compare the strength of concrete cubes made with t
aggregates in question with that of-concrete made with acceptable aggregates. The details of this concrete te
including mix proportions, type of cement, type and grading of reference aggregates, age at test and criterion f
. . , acceptance, shall be agreed between the supplier and the purchaser or between their representatives prior to tl
test.

-, NOTE. No simple tests for the durability and frost resistance of concrete or for corrosion of reinforcement can be applied,
experience of the properties of concrete made with the type of aggregates in question and a knowledge of their source are the
only reliable means of assessment.

Aggregates vary in their shrinkage properties and, when this may be excessive, account should be taken of this
factor. Aggregates also differ in their modulus of elasticity and, where applicable, this should be taken into
consideration. Furthermore, where the appearance of the finished concrete is important, care should be taken to
select a suitable aggregate, for which the only guide is a knowledge of the source and of similar work which has
been carried out with the aggregate in question.

4.i Mechanical properties of coarse aggregate

4.2.1 '10 % fines' value. The '10% fines' value, when determined in accordance with BS 812, shall be not less
than 50 kN, Where the purchaser has specified aggregates for concrete wearing surfaces, the '10% fines' value
shall not be less than 100 kN.

4.2_2 Aggregate impact value. As an alternative to the '10 % fines' test, the aggregate impact test in accordance
'" with BS 812 may be carried out. The aggregate impact value shall not exceed 45 %. Where the purchaser has
specified aggregates for concrete wearing surfaces, the aggregate impact value shall not exceed 30 %.

BS 882 Part 2 1973

5. Grading

5.1 Coarse aggregate

The grading of coarse aggregate, when determined by a test according to Clause 3, shall be within the limits given
in Table I.

BS 882 Part 2 1973

5.2 Fine aggregate

The grading of fine aggregate, when determined by a test according to Clause 3 above, shall be within the limits of
one of the grading zones given in Table 2, except that a total tolerance of up to 5 % may be applied to the
percentages given in light type. This tolerance may be split up; for example, it could be I % on each of three
sieves and 2 % on another, of 4 % on one sieve and I % on another.
The fine aggregate shall be described as fine aggregate of the grading zone into which it falls, e.g. BS 882,
Grading Zone 1.
NOTE. It is intended that individual zones should not be specified in contract documents relating to concrete; the concrete
mixes should be modified to make the best use of the materials readily available.

* For crushed stone sands, the permissible limit is increased to 20 %. The 5 % tolerance permitted by 5.2 may, in addition, be
applied to the percentages in light type.

NOTE. The commonly used proportions of one part of fine aggregate to two parts of coarse aggregate, i.e, a fine aggregate
percentage of about 33 % by. weight of the total aggregate, are not always the most suitable for making concrete of high strength
and good durability.
To make concrete of the best quality with the range of aggregates allowed, the mix should be suitably designed and the
proportion of fine aggregate in the mix should be reduced as the fine aggregate grading becomes finer.
For example, in an investigation using an irregular shaped gravel of 20 mm maximum size and a natural sand. concrete mixes of
1 : 6 proportion by weight were found to require the same water/cement ratio and to have the same workability and strength, when
the sand was graded to lie in the middle of Grading Zones 1,2,3 and 4, if the sand contents were approximately 45,35,30 and
25 % by weight respectively.
The most suitable proportion of fine aggregate to be used for a particular cement/aggregate ratio will, however, depend on the
actual grading. the particle shape and the surface texture of both the fine and the coarse aggregates. In particular. the correct design
of the mix becomes increasingly important as the grading of the fine aggregate approaches the coarser limit of Grading Zone 1 or
the finer limit of Grading Zone 4. The suitability of a given fine aggregate for use with the available coarse aggregate should always
be ascertained, this being especially important in respect of reinforced concrete structures.
