Theoretical Framework

This study will anchor upon the ideas of Cultural identity theory.

Cultural Identity Theory is a self-identification; it reaffirms the sense of the belongingness

to a group. It is the extent to which one is a representative of a given culture behaviorally,

communicatively, psychologically, and sociology. Also, it consist of values, meanings, customs

and beliefs used to relate to the world. The Cultural Identity Theory allows people’s judgements

to be influence by physical appearance, ancestral origin, or personal behavior (dressing, speech,

holidays, and celebrations) about whether they pr others belong to a cultural group. Cultural

identity is evolving and covers the entire life span of a human being. This theory deals with the

study of individuals’ use of communicative process to construct and negotiate their cultural group

identities and relationships in particular context. An individuals’ message during interaction

contains multiple cultural identities such as nationalist, racist, ethnic, class related, sex, gender

based, political views, and religion.

There are three components of this theory; the Individual, Relational and Communal

Identity. Individual refers to how the individuals interprets his cultural identity based on his

experiences. Relational refers to what is the appropriate behavior of an individual when he

interlays with one and another. And Communal identity is the communication method used in

negotiation of shared identity (Communication Theory, n.d).

In this study, the individual is the composer of the selected songs and the band December

Avenue that performs their hugot songs at the community wherein they belongs and interprets their

identity based on their experiences. Relational is the way how the vocalist of the band December

Avenue perform and sing the songs to the community and to the listeners. And also the way on
how the composer write and composed it, wherein the researcher will interview the vocalist of

December Avenue and the composer of selected songs if the selected hugot songs shows

appropriate influence on the culture. December Avenue’s being a popular band and has a popular
