CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

Project Context

Starting out is the hardest part of creating a successful business.

Maintaining it is another challenge that one must conquer or all else crumbles to

dust and ashes. In order to achieve successful business venture, you need to

have an efficient control over your business. In addition, you need to keep your

precious data as it holds the roots of your company; it contains your foundations

and your ideals as well as your business profile.

It was in mid-1960 when the late owner, John Uy King Po, decided to

venture into business. He established the store and named it after their family

name -“Uy King Po”. The store was selling a variety of household hardware. The

family business was then passed on to his son, Johnson Uy, who is the current

owner, in the year 2010. It was located at V. Gustilo St. Not until late 2015 when

the place was bought by SM Retail Inc. and transferred the store to Araneta St.

They change the name to SCC Hardware and Lumber right after that. Now, with

a wide range of hardware, lumber and construction products, it continued to

prosper, serving clients with their needs in the City of San Carlos.

The store is using manual system in selling of their products. As such,

requires continuous monitoring to ensure that each transaction is accounted for

and that products are maintained at the appropriate stocking levels that will make

accessing inventory records a more cumbersome process. It results to slow

services, inexact report, and inaccurate computation of sales due to human error.

The manual system for them produces most of the times, inaccurate data that can

lead to loss of profit. The laziness during the traditional way of recording of items

too, gives them the idea of just doing approximates. Every time there is a buyer,

the seller writes everything from recording sales to receipts. Their inventory is

based on sales recorded in every transaction. Inventory takes a lot time to discern

the result because recorded transactions need to be reviewed first since

sometimes error cannot be avoided. The manual system consumes a lot of time

and it is a lot of work for the cashier.

To overcome the deficiencies of using the manual system, the proponents

propose a system that would supplement all the current’s system’s shortcomings.

By using the Point of Sale System, you can turn the business around by

providing an all-in-one solution to a multitude of everyday issues. Inventories that

fail to match tallies, unrecorded sales, human errors and the time wasted on

correcting them are all easily avoided when using a POS system that accurately

collects and records data, allowing you to really see how the business is

functioning and how to continually improve it. The best thing about having a POS

in your business is: as new stocks arrive and it is sold, it keeps the stock levels
current and updated, hence making it easier to identify which item are selling and

which items are not. It is a platform powerful enough to run the entire business.

Purpose and Description

SCC Hardware and Lumber Point of Sale System aims to meet the

demand and even the needs of the store in terms of sales and inventory. This

mission has driven the business to look for innovative yet inexpensive

approaches to deliver quality services. Thus, the need for Point of Sale has been

felt more deeply. This study is not only bringing the gap between the needs of

users and technology but it would rather be beneficial to the business - for the

store to remain competitive. It will enhance the business performance so as to

reap big from the whole sale retail business world. To the SCC Hardware and

Lumber Administration– this study will hence help the owner to make right

decisions because information will be rightly available and in correct format. It

also brings the potential for the administration in improving sales and profits

through better analysis of inventory trends, including patterns of delivery and

demand. To the employees, they will be able to avoid being intense in sense of

questioning about the daily sales in particular days. This is to enhance the due

transactions of the whole operations of the store. To the costumers, this will be
an advantage for them to have basis about each item that they bought in the

store. It will serve as their baseline-data for their transactions.

Objectives

The Project aims to develop the SCC Hardware Point of Sale (POS), the

researchers intend to:

1. To create a system that can make daily operations of SCC Hardware

and Lumber run easier and faster by automating the transaction

process and tracking of important sales data.

2. To make the management system more efficient, data consistent, and

provide a comfortable and easy services to the store.

3. To easily track down the purchases, expenses and inventory records

to improve cash flow, visibility, and decision making.

4. To optimize the security and validity of the number of supplies, sales,

purchases, expenses every month.

5. To generate report and receipt.

Scope and Limitation

This study will focus on the development of Point of Sale System

for SCC Hardware and Lumber in San Carlos City. The proposed study is limited

to keeping track of sales and inventory of products. It is concerned with reports

relevant for the management to make timely decisions and justifiable assessment

of the business. Reports which present labor auditing are not anymore within the

scope of the study. The limitations of the study include not involving the

probability that customers would carry out credit card transactions. Also, credit is

not viable to customers who directly place orders in the store.
