1. Definition of research in general and management research in particular.

Research in general is a detailed study of a subject especially in order to discover

new information or reach a new understanding. It is a careful consideration of a study

regarding a particular problem/ concern using scientific methods.

On the other hand, management research is a systematic inquiry that helps solve

business problems and contributes to management knowledge. It is a process that involves

analysis of data to draw conclusions or collection of primary data through observations,

questionnaires and interview. Such research should produce a degree of understanding or

knowledge that a manager may apply within their task environment. High quality

information obtained from management research helps managers make the right decisions.

2. Why do work organizations need to conduct management research? How can

management research improve efficiency and ensure effectiveness in the organization?

Work organizations need to conduct management research because it helps the

entire organization come up with the best strategy, plan or decision supported by reliable

data/ knowledge. In any type of organization consisting of different people with different

background and level of education, the management cannot just decide based on opinion

or presumption and risk everyone by doing hasty decisions. A good manager would

research and analyze before deciding to widen their options and prove if a certain plan,

strategy or decision is the most practical, effective and beneficial for everyone. This may

lessen the probability of failure, bankruptcy and putting the organization in danger. It is

like calculating every move to see if it is best for the organization or in some cases if it is
the lesser evil or for the greater good of the entire organization. If management research is

applied, the organization could be confident enough to decide because the pros and cons

and every angle of it are carefully studied/ analysed.

3. Why is there a need for health care providers to be knowledgeable in planning,

conducting and evaluating management research? Cite specific instances of the need.

Health care providers among all others need to be knowledgeable in planning,

conducting and evaluating management research because many people’s health or even

lives are at stake or affected by their profession. For instance, in a hospital setting, the

argument about manpower versus machines could be carefully studied/ analysed through

management research. In choosing machines over manpower, the management must

carefully study the pros and cons of replacing a part of the work force by purchasing more

advanced technology equipment or machines. Management research could help weigh the

benefits of machines versus hiring more health care professionals. Being knowledgeable

in management research helps health care professional managers become more practical in

operations without having to sacrifice the quality of health care being provided to patients.

Another example would be choosing whether the management should purchase or

lease a certain machine which is worth millions and may be easily become out-dated or

obsolete due to the fast advancement in technology. In knowing management research, the

management could study the pros and cons of each side to be able to prove which option

is the best for the hospital.
