Name _____________________ Act 3 Work: Rehearse Scene I, Understand Scene 2

Read: This work will take most of the period. I’ll collect this paper from each person tomorrow when
groups stage Act 3, Scene 2. Each person will be responsible for turning in this paper.

Directions:

1. Read through the rubric first.

Staging rubric: 10-point summative grade – Yes=1 No=0
 Do you show how the actors get to the scene?
 Are the actors not speaking doing something with purpose?
 Does the actor make any motion during a speech if the content of the line suggests there could
be a motion?
 Are other actors reacting to what the speaker is saying if appropriate and not reacting if not
appropriate?
 Does the scene clearly show what Puck is intent on doing? (Hint: Why is he interacting with the
mechanicals? Do the mechanicals see him?)
 Do actors speak with emotion? Does their emotion coincide with the content of their language
and what is happening in the plot?
 Can the audience tell who is who? What would each character wear? Does Puck look different
than the mechanicals? Does Bottom transform?
 Is there background that looks like it has been done in more than 10 minutes?
 Is what Puck wants to do clear?
 Is it clear that Bottom misuses words (malapropism)?

2. Watch
The first video I have uploaded on my website
from the Globe Theater in London.

FYI: The actual website is https://teach.shakespearesglobe.com/midsummer-videos#tab366

3. Practice:
Then as a group, practice and plan. We perform tomorrow at the beginning of class; if you don’t
get done, do it for homework.

4. Character Analysis Question: What does Bottom

say about love? Is what he says true? How does
this reinforce or contrast with how he acts and
what he says in the beginning of the scene? (200
words)

Turn it in on Turnitin:
Class Code: 21982232
Enrollment Key: Mz4aL1T

Homework: Due on Monday –

a. Watch the second video on the website and then read through the part of 3.1 you
did not perform and then read that section.
b. Answer the following question in 200-word paragraph that uses textual examples.
1. The paragraph should have a topic sentence that expresses your conclusion and
then provide evidence that addresses both Bottom’s statements about love and
his behavior and statements earlier in the scene.
2. The evidence should be introduced with some context that would orient the
reader to the circumstances surrounding the quote. (3 pieces of evidence)
3. Please punctuate quotes correctly.

Remember AP Lang – Mrs. Gaspary and I use

different letters but the same principles for
analysis.

Point – State your point (your conclusion about the

evidence). Think meaning.
Evidence- Introduce evidence; make sure to orient
your reader to the context of the evidence. Think
about the NoRedInk.com assignment.
Explanation- Explain why you think the evidence
means what you say it does.
