Beowulf: Story (recounts the adventures and the triumph
of a hero)
Beowulf is a young warrior in Geatland, who comes to the aid
of the Scyldings. Hrothgar is the Danish king and he and his
people have been terrorized by a monster. Beowulf brings 14
of his finest men with him. He is returning the favor, Hrothgar
sheltered Beowulf's father during a deadly feud. He also wants
enhance his reputation and gather treasure for his king,
Hygelac. The monster, Grendel comes and attacks them, but
Beowulf cuts off his claw and the monster is mortally wounded.
The mother of Grendel, not as strong as her son, but deeply
motivated, plans revenge. She sneaks in and gets her son's
claw. Beowulf and the men follow the trail of the mother and
are lead to a dark swamp. Beowulf dives in to find the mother.
He tries to fight her with his sword, but to no avail. He suddenly
sees a magical sword and slices through the neck and spine of
the monster, killing her. When the monster dies, he sees a
great treasure, but he leaves it there, only bringing the head of
the monster back with him.
He returns home and ends up becoming king and rules for 50
years. He has one last battle. This one is with the fiery dragon.
He kills the dragon, but is mortally wounded in the battle and
dies.
Beowulf is the longest surviving Anglo-Saxon poems today. It
is a literary masterpiece. To know that a work of literature has
lasted for this many years is remarkable. This poem is
considered one of the most important works of literature today.
It is truly one of the most amazing pieces of literature we have
in our use today.
Beowulf: Main Idea/ Theme
A theme in a literary work is a recurring, unifying subject or
idea, a motif that allows us to understand more deeply the
character and their world. In Beowulf, the major themes reflect
the values and the motivations of the characters.
There are some life lessons or morals that we can learn and
take from the epic poem, Beowulf. Some of the morals are
related with the goodness and the evil. In this context, many of
them talk about the story of the great hero.
The first life lesson is if we want to be the winners in a fight, we
have to be fair in it. It is reflected when Beowulf and his men
slept in the mead hall and everybody laid awake because of
their afraid about Grendel's arrival possibility. Unfortunately,
Grendel really came by crashing the great door of the mead
hall. He grabbed one of the Beowulf's men then threw him to
his mouth. When Grendel came to Beowulf, he immediately
knew which one Beowulf was and before Grendel could grab
him, Beowulf got holding him firstly. Beowulf fought Grendel
fairly, without weapon, because Grendel did not have a
weapon. Beowulf would be shamed if he slew Grendel with a
sword. After Beowulf killed Grendel by tearing off his arm,
Grendel fled and died. The great arm of Grendel was hung
above the mead hall. This part of the story teaches us that if
we fight fair, we are destined to be the winners.
The second life lesson is we have to be loyal. In this
story, it was written in Wiglaf’s characteristics, Wiglaf who
became Beowulf's successor. When all of the other soldiers left
Beowulf in his fatal battle against the Dragon, Wiglaf did not.
He showed his courage and loyalty in helping Beowulf
defeated the Dragon. That was why he is named the next
leader. It was also written in Beowulf’s characteristics. It was
true that Beowulf fought these monsters to help his tribe and
the Danes, even though he also did so for fame and glory and
hopes to be remembered for what he had done. That was why,
on his deathbed, he requested that a monument be built to
remember him and how great he was. In seeing this
monument, future generations will remember Beowulf and the
qualities that he had embodied, reminding them to fight evil
forces with courage and strength and to always be loyal. It was
for Anglo Saxon culture that did not have value humility.
The other life lessons that I got in Beowulf poem are,
we have to fight for the good of mankind, does not just for
ourselves. It provides lessons in morality, bravery, civility and
selflessness. It also teaches us to be brave to do a sacrifice to
get what we want. It was reflected in what the main character,
Beowulf, had done from the beginning of the story until the
end, until his death in his own sacrifice. He killed Grendel for
the peace of the Hrothgar's castle even though he wanted to
do it also for his fame. Then with his bravery, he also killed the
mother of Grendel. Until he became the king there replacing
the king before, Hrothgar. He wanted took a revenge for the
death of the king, Hrothgar. Hrothgar was killed by the Dragon
who suddenly came to the Hrothgar's castle and burned it all.
He wanted to save all the people that maybe would killed too
so he came to the Dragon’s lair to kill it. He came out all of his
effort to kill the Dragon until he succed killing the Dragon. He
sacrificed himself by cutting his arm to kill the Dragon. The
Dragon dead and him too.
In conclusion, after reading Beowulf, the life lessons
that consisted in the poem are if we want to win in a fight we
have to be fair in it, we have to be loyal and we have to be
brave to fight the evil in our life. This story also teaches us to
believe that as long we are in a right way, we will be helped by
our God againts the evil.

Sleep has always been a fascinating topic. We spend about one-third of our adult lives sleeping. Most animals sleep in a
similar fashion - they collapse and relax their muscles. In contrast, birds and horses sleep upright, with their antigravity
muscles at work. Most of us complain when we have not gotten several hours of sleep. Yet some people sleep for an hour
or less a day and lead otherwise healthy and normal lives.

INVICTUS

Invictus, meaning “unconquerable” or “undefeated” in Latin, is a poem by William Ernest Henley. The poem was written
while Henley was in the hospital being treated for tuberculosis of the bone, also known as Pott’s disease. He had had the
disease since he was very young, and his foot had been amputated shortly before he wrote the poem. This poem is about
courage in the face of death, and holding on to one’s own dignity despite the indignities life places before us.

The theme of the poem is the will to survive in the face of a severe test. Henley himself faced such a test. After
contracting tuberculosis of the bone in his youth, he suffered a tubercular infection when he was in his early twenties that
resulted in amputation of a leg below the knee.

Types of Context Clues

Definition - in this type, the new word may be formally defined or an explanation may be provided within the sentence or
in the following sentence
Example: An antibody is a protein that produces an immune response.
Restatement - involves other ways of writing a new word
Example: I admit that I am a nocturnal person. In other words, I am active during the night.
Synonym - in this type of clue, another word or phrase that is similar in meaning or can be compared to an unfamiliar
word is used
Example: My little brother is such a nuisance. Even my dog thinks he is annoying.
Antonym - another word or phrase that means the opposite of or is in contrast with an unfamiliar word is used
Example: Even if you think my opponent tomorrow is a formidable player, for me he is unthreatening.

PARAPHRASING AND SUMMARISING

Paraphrasing- restating text giving the meaning in another form.
- Paraphrasing shows that you’ve read and understand the original text rather than repeating it word for
word.
Summarizing
• When you summarize, you reduce the amount of text. When you reduce text, you take away words.
• Only use the most important ideas from the text.
– Focus on the key points
• It’s okay to ignore information that isn’t important.

Rising and Falling Intonation

-the intonation rises if the question is answerable by yes or no and the intonation falls down if the question asks for
information.
