Academic English – B1

Public: all students

Description
This course in academic English is for all students who wish to work towards obtaining a B1
proficiency level (Common European Framework) (lower intermediate). You will develop your
academic vocabulary and grammar while working on your reading, writing, listening and
speaking skills.

Learning outcomes
By the end of this course, students should be able to

• write essays and reports at a B1+ level;


• read and understand more specific and technical texts;
• listen and understand lectures and seminar discussion at a B1 level;
• speak and participate in seminars and debates; and
• use a wider range of vocabulary.

Prerequisites

A2 (Common European Framework); no certificate required but if your level is lower than this,
this course is not suitable for you.

Evaluation

• Speaking, listening, writing and reading skills will be evaluated in task based
Activities;
• Listening: information from listening texts has to be understood (lectures, seminars etc.);
• Reading: information in (or answer questions to) a reading texts has to be found;
• Writing: academic text production;
• Students will be evaluated on their active participation in the course, their regular
homework (which can also be grammar or vocabulary exercises) and on their final
test (written and spoken).
