Main task: DESIGN TRAINING MODEL FOR ABDOMINAL SUTURING AND BANGING

INTERVIEW QUESTIONS
1) What is the most preferred technique of suturing?
2) What are the available training models?
3) What are the challenges with the current training models?
4) What is the maximum number of students to be trained?
5) What are the constraints of this training model?
6) What is the size of incisions in length?
7) What are the dangerous abdominal part that we need to be

PRIMARY RESEARCH FINDINGS FROM MUHIMBILI HOSPITAL

1. Currently there is no suturing model at Muhimbili Hospital
2. They train students through observation from actual patients during suturing process
3. Due to scarcity of medical personnel and a huge number of patients students need to
train within a short time so as to help .this may compromise the well being of the patient
4. Most students are not allowed to engage in actual suturing since they tend to waste
most of resources
5. Challenges encountered during learning how to suture include difficulty in handling the
needle also puncturing the skin is difficult since it has muscles
6. How the model is supposed to be
-slippery top
- hard to pierce
7. We should know the characteristics of each layer
8. Having training models enables the procedure to be efficient
9. Layers that are not sutured(vicela, adipose tissues)
10. Types of abdominal incision

● Types of suturing techniques
● How to suture different layers
● Available training models for suturing

-How suturing model is supposed to be
1. Natural as possible

2. Should contain layers to mimic the human skin

3. “It is the fat layer that causes the greatest difficulties for many when
practicing suturing techniques. Hence, the silicone practice pad must
contain a layer that mimics the malleability of subcutaneous fat.
PROBLEM DEFINITION

To have competent clinicians/ doctors /surgeons there

must be efficient ways in which they could be trained. In
the area of ABDOMINAL SUTURING AND BANDAGING
they need to do observations and practice as much as
possible .Since it is risky for new clinicians to practice on a
live patient ,then training models are required. Muhimbili
Hospital has no training models for suturing and thus the
only way to train clinicians is through
OBSERVATIONS.Our major task is to design a durable
training model for abdominal suturing and bandaging to
train clinicians. The model should be able to provide the
realistic texture of each abdomen layer ,that will allow the
student clinicians to learn and have the hand on practice
before they practice it to a real patient at a low cost.
