Product Introduction & Purpose Paper

In my ISM mentorship, I have observed and witnessed several different procedures which

has allowed me to see what a daily routine is like for a dentist. One procedure that really

interested me was seeing an impression of a tooth being made. While shadowing my mentor,

Justin Riel, I found this process to be quite fascinating, so we decided to make our product over

something fun and beneficial. The procedure was something done quite often at my internship

and a process that I found interesting. Overall, my product will made used as a mouthguard for

athletes and along with the product I will provide a pamphlet that lists the steps of procedure and

the benefits of a mouth guard.

My mentor, Justin Riel, is an avid sports fan, so he was quite passionate about the amount

of trauma that has occurred to athletes due to the lack of protection their provided on the field.

Nonetheless, the mouth guard will help prevent any accidents towards the athletes. There have

been several times where athletes have broken, cracked, and chipped a tooth due to sports, so

together we found that this product will help me gain hands on experience. The procedure in

total seemed quite time consuming but it was something I had never seen before, watching the

process of the molding was quite inspiring and made me realize that it was something I wanted

to try on my own. Of course, my mentor, Dr. Riel will provide me with the materials and will

work with me side by side as I complete my product.

This semester, I had decided to mentor with someone in the dental field because overtime

I found that the career was one, I found interesting. The idea of flexible hours, different

procedures, and being able to do everything on your own time was something I found pleasing.

As my mentor described all the reasons, he loves about being a dentist, it made me realize that

maybe the career was something of my interest. Ever since I was younger, the options of my

career have been changing as I have gotten older, but as I shadow my mentor and see all the

benefits of dentistry, I cannot imagine doing anything else.

Now the steps I need to take to build my product would be to start researching and learn

more about the procedure. As I shadow my mentor, I’m hoping to see more patients that need

impressions made so I’m able to take notes of how the process is done. Because I have only

watched this procedure once, it will be best to ask more questions, so I gain a better

understanding on the topic. When I start the molding process, Dr. Riel will help me along and

make sure to fix any mistakes or offer any advice.

Nonetheless, what I hope to gain by completing this project is to learn something new

and know that at the end of the day I was able to get a different take on things. This type of

experience isn’t given to just anyone and it’s amazing that any student of Horizons is able to get

this opportunity and learn more about a career that might seem fit. My product is something that

can really benefit many athletes that aren’t aware of the trauma that can affect their teeth and I’m

hoping that with enough attention my product could be something that can benefit others.
