Relative clauses: Whose


Some sentences in English have just one clause
(subject and predicate):
Pedro is a famous writer.

But some have two or more clauses: Pedro, whose hands are small, is a famous writer.

In English, the second clause is a “relative clause” because it gives us


more information about the person or thing in the main clause. Example: Grammar Key
You can put two sentences
The dog is over there.. The dogs owner lives next door. together by making the second
sentence a relative clause, and
The dog whose owner lives next door is over there. adding whose.

Whose We use “which” for relationships or possessions. It is used in defining relative clauses and
non-defining relative clauses.

The little girl whose doll was lost is sad.

Taking into account if the information provided is relevant or not, we have two types of sentences:

• These sentences are joined without using commas. • The extra information goes with commas.

• In this type of sentences, it is unnecessary to repeat the noun from the main clause or introduce a personal
pronoun to replace it.
Example: The woman whose the woman’s car is a Ferrari is coming tomorrow.

• You need to put the relative clause as close as possible to the noun it refers to.
Example:
Pablo writes interesting books whose brother is here.
Pablo, whose brother is here, writes interesting books.

• We often use a relative clause in the middle of a sentence with the most important information at the end.
Example: The house whose roof is old belongs to me.
