Configuring Notification on the Storage Management Appliance

There are several steps to configure the notification of events from the Storage Management Appliance. The
steps outlined below do not necessarily have to be done in this order, but it has been proven to work well this
way.

The notification functionality of the Storage Management Appliance utilizes SNMP traps and SMTP for email
and pager notifications. Command View EVA utilizes SNMP traps to notify the Appliance that an event has
occurred. The Appliance is then configured to notify someone via email or pager of that event. A local user is
created (or imported) and an email or pager address is associated with that user.

Step 1: Configure Command View EVA to generate SNMP traps for events

1-a) Launch Command View EVA.

1-b) Click on the Storage Cell Name.

1-c) Click the Set Options button in the right hand pane.

1-d) Click the Configure Event Notification button.

1-e) Select the Critical Events and Warning Events checkboxes and then click on Configure.

1-f) Check to make sure all the events listed have a check next to them and then click Notify All.

1-g) Click the Save Changes button.

At this point we have told Command View EVA to report all Critical and Warning events. If you want to
receive all the events, just click the All Events checkbox instead. I would not recommend this though as it will
generate excessive events.

The next step is to tell Command View EVA where to send the SNMP traps that it is going to generate.

1-h) Click on the Configure Host Notification button.

1-i) If the Host Notification List is empty, click on the Modify Host List button and add the IP address or
hostname of the Management Appliance. Click OK when the list is correct.

You may now close Command View EVA.

Step 2: Configure an SMTP Mail Server to use for notifications

2-a) Select Maintenance.

2-b) Click on Mail Server.

2-c) Enter the SMTP mail server hostname or IP address and optionally change the From field to identify
which Storage Management Appliance is sending the message. Some SMTP servers require a valid user
account to send email. If this is the case, select the Basic Authentication box and enter the user
information required. Be sure to check the Go to Send Test Email box at the bottom to verify the Mail
Server settings are correct. This will generate a test email and verify the settings. If there are any errors,
verify the settings for the Mail Server and retry. Until the test email goes through, do not continue.

Step 3: Configure a local User account for notifications

The appliance will use a user account to send notifications to. The user account can be created from scratch, or
if the appliance is a member of a domain, a user account can be imported to use for notification. For our
purposes, we’ll create a user account from scratch called “notification” and assign a valid email address to that
account.

3-a) Select Users.

3-b) Select New.

3-c) Enter a Username, Fullname, Description and Password for the user. In this example the username is
“notification”. Select the Administrator privilege level and click OK.

3-e) Select the Contact Info tab on the left hand side and enter the Email and/or Email Pager Address to be
used for notification and then click on the Notification Info tab.

3-f) Select the type of notification the user is to receive by using the drop down box at the top of the screen.
Check the box at the bottom of the screen to prevent multiple notifications of the same severity and
input a time value. 10 to 30 minutes should be allowable. Then click OK.

Step 4: Configure Notifications for the Management Appliance and the EVA

Now we need to configure the Management Appliance and the EVA subsystem applications for notification.
The application configuration allows a granular level of notification. We can select which type of events to
notify or which severity of events to notify. We’ll configure the Management Appliance and the EVA to notify
for all CRITICAL, WARNING and FATAL events. If we choose to notify INFORMATIONAL events as well,
the notifications would be excessive.

4-a) Select Notification.

Here we are looking for the Management Appliance application and the EVA application. We only have the
Management Appliance listed so we need to run Discovery to find the EVA application.

4-b) Select Discovery.

4-c) Select the Local San Discovery checkbox and then select Start Discovery.

4-d) Click OK.

4-e) You can see the discovery is now running, give it a few minutes to complete and then go back to
Notification.

4-f) Now the EVA is listed as an application and we can continue to configure notification. Select the
Management Appliance checkbox and then select Events.

4-g) The screen will show all events by default.

4-h) Since we want to only be notified of Critical, Fatal and Warning events, change the Search: drop down
box to Severity and type in Critical. Click the Go button.

4-i) Click the check box next to Sub-Type to select all the events and click Configure. This will configure
all the events that have check boxes next to them. On the next screen, select the user that we want to
notify (“notification” in this example) and click the Add button to move that user into the Notify Users
box. Next, scroll down to the bottom of the page and place a check in all three checkboxes. You’ll also
want to enter a time in the Duplicate Notification Setting box. 10 minutes is recommended. This should
prevent duplicate notifications of the same event for 10 minutes. Then click OK.

4-j) Now verify the events we selected have an entry in the Recipient List. You should have a (1) indicated
if you added one user, a (2) if you added two users and so on.

4-k) Now change the severity type to Warning and configure all the events as we have just done for the
Critical errors. It is important to note that some of the event types have more than one page of events.
To configure all the events check the box next to Sub-Type on the first page of events and configure
them. After the events are configured, click on the Page Down button to the right of the Go button
to display the next page(s). Then select the checkbox next to Sub-Type again to select all the events on
that page and then configure them. Then change the severity type to Fatal and configure those events.
The EVA does not have any Fatal events so you only need to configure these for the Management
appliance. You can select both the Management Appliance and the EVA at the same time and configure
all the Critical events at once and then do the Warnings events and so on. It is important to remember to
Page Down after selecting the severity level until all the events have been configured.

Step 5: Verify the user you setup is configured for notification

5-a) Select Users, select the user you have added and click the Notification button.

5-b) You should now see both the Management Appliance application and the EVA application listed.
