Course Objectives:
To understand the basics of Industrial Chemical calculations, Chemical reaction Engineering and Instrumentation as well as control of
Biochemical Processes

Pre-requisites: Knowledge of Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics

Student Learning Outcomes:


 To develop material and energy balance equations of various biochemical process.
 To calculate and categorize rate and order of the Reactions in reactors.
 Demonstrate and distinguish various instrumentation and processes control systems.

Course Contents:

Module I 35
Material and Energy Balances
Units and dimensions, Dimensional analysis; Simple problems on material balance calculations
involving unit processes and reactive systems; Basic energy concepts - enthalpy changes in chemical
reactions and in non-reactive processes, Energy balance calculations, Heat of reaction.
Module II 35
Chemical reaction engineering
Kinetics of homogenous reactions: Concepts of reaction rate, order of reaction and molecularity, Analysis
of batch reactors for kinetic interpretation of data and isothermal reactor design for single and multiple
reactions, Design equations for CSTR and plug flow reactors.

Module III 15
Process Instrumentation
Principles of measurement: error, accuracy and sensitivity; Measurement of flow, pressure, temperature,
level, pH, viscosity and chemical composition.

Module IV 15
Basics of process control
Basic concepts of feedback control, control loop and its elements, Dynamic behaviour of first order
physical systems, controller hardware, choice of controllers and settings. Introduction to advanced control
systems: feed forward, cascade and ratio control.
