Dear AP, -

I saw the magazine on stand and

the magazine that I have shot in India?

Regards,
Chris Tyler

Dear Chris,
Thanks for your email and I am happy to know that you liked the images that were featured in the issue.
This is a relatively unknown festival across the country, but it is celebrated in the West region in a big way.
It is colourful and full of action and one of the reasons for us to feature it in the Festivals of India section
was to ensure that photographers like you know the beauty and the opportunity it provides to shoot. This
is an annual feature and may be you can see it next year. But in the meanwhile, the month of September
will also provide you with a great opportunity to shoot Ganesh Chaturthi.
As for featuring your work. Sure you can send us the images to have a look and we can see if we can
publish it in any of our sections.

Dear J,
The 18-SSmm is a good basic lens and it is used
by amateurs a lot. It is a good lens to start with, but
usually it isn't used to shoot videos. If you have an
option to use some other lens then that might be
better. But otherwise 18-SSmm lens can also be
used.

On The Occation of World Photography Day

World photography day was celebrated by Asian Photography a day earlier this year
and what a turnout it was! 19th August is celebrated with zeal and enthusiasm as World
Photography Day around the world. However, this year the date was a Monday which
meant that celebrations started early! Asian Photography, a brand that has celebrated
photography itself, in India, for almost 32 years marked the day with a Photowalk
and review session with the legendary Mr.Prashant Godbole in Mumbai. This was the
magazine's second event in the last two months with the first being on Fashion street
photowalk that took place in June. Street photography is one of those genres that
increases confidence in photographers and allows budding amateurs to take their
cameras out in public. Asian Photography understood the importance of the same
and this culminated in the photowalk this month.

W h ere did w e m eet?

Since Mumbai is famous for rains, we were a little doubtful if the
weather gods would be kind on us on 1 8th August which was a Sunday.
Thankfully rains were scarce and even though there were intermittent
showers, Mumbaikars braved the rain and arrived on location on time.
The location for the meetup was near the Statue of 'The Common
Man' which is in Worli and is based on R.K Laxman's famous cartoon
strip, a bit poetic for a Street Photography meetup! The time for the
meet up was 6:30AM which is extremely early given that participants
came for the walk from far away places like Kalyan, Navi Mumbai etc
and trains in Mumbai, which are the lifeline for transportation in the city,
start operating from 3:00 AM in the mornings. Many participants took
the first train from stations to reach the venue while some grouped
together and car pooled. Mr.Prashant Godbole arrived 1 5 minutes
before time, and interacted with the participants who came in early.

What d id w e l earn?
At 6:30 sharp around 40 enthusiastic young participants gathered
around the statue eager to absorb what Mr. Godbole had to share.
They gathered around the ace photographer and the orientation
started. Mr. Godbole gave the participants some useful tips on how
to approach a subject, how to get close to a subject, what to shoot at
Worli Seaface and how to shoot. He also shared tips on how to get a
clean background, the importance of minimalism in photographs and
On the walk
The participants were asked to meet again at 8:30 AM near
the statue where Mr. Godbole asked the participants how their
shoot went and if they got good photographs or not. He said
he will share what mistakes the participants made as well as
share what they did right when the review session started.
The participants then made their way to L.S. Raheja School of
Art in Worli where we had arranged for some refreshments for
them to cool off while they select photographs for the review
session. The participants had to select three best photos from
the shoot. Editing the photos was at their discretion and they
had to submit the same to our team in half an hour! Our Editor,
Mr. Bhavya Desai along with Mr. Prashant Godbole started the
review session by thanking the Asian Photography Team, Srishti
Digilife, who had graciously arranged for three gifts for the best
photos from the photowalk and they also thanked the venue
L.S. Raheja School of Art who were our partners. The review
session started with Mr. Godbole looking at the participants'
photographs one by one and critiquing them to help them
improve. The participants enjoyed the experience as it was
extremely wholesome and enlightening. Mr. Godbole shared
tips while reviewing the photographs and explained street
photography and its nuances to the participants. Since the
conversations were informal, the participants joked and laughed
with Mr. Godbole and enjoyed a lot. A pre-World Photography
Day, photowalk well celebrated! Now the time came for the
winners to be selected. Mr Godbole and Bhavya Desai sat and

SSD SHOOTOUT

The technology in the flash memory industry has been moving at rampant speeds.
While there is continuous effort to pack more memory in a smaller size, manufacturers
are also ensuring that consumers get faster speeds with the increase in data sizes. With
hard drives with movable parts becoming more and more outdated, Solid-State Drives
(SSDs) that feature no moving parts have become popular amongst photographers.
The reason for their popularity is negligible start-up time and faster speeds and with
the increase in the storage capacity in the past year, these portable SSD drives are the
way for the future.
And since photographers use external storage devices during shoots and also to
store and backup their data, this year we decided to extend our memory shootout to
Portable SSDs as well. And the usual contenders in this industry include San Disk and
Kingston, both of whom sent their best drives in the 500GB capacity for the shootout.

ntenders
The two contenders in this shootout are:
• SanDisk Extreme Portable SSO 500GB

• Kingston HyperX Savage EXO SSD 480GB

Apart from the difference in the capacity between the two drtves
there is also a difference in the price between the products. The
Sandisk SSO is prtced at 7.500 whereas Kingston is valued at
5.999.

Parameters
The parameters for the SSD shootout remain the same as the
Memory card shootout where the products are run through
benchmarking tests. These include:

LENS SHOOTOUT

1rror ess
Mirrorless cameras have taken the world by storm in the last few years and have proven
to be a tough competition for DSLRs. The primary reason that has attracted DSLR
users to switch to mirrorless cameras is the smaller and lighter sizes while providing
similar quiality and performance for both photos and videos. With more and more
photographers buying these cameras, manufacturers have started concentrating
on increasing the lens portfolios for them. Among all the lenses in use, full-frame
mirrorless camera users also sometimes feel the need to use standard zoom lenses
like the ones that DSLRs have. The standard zoom lens is a great lens giving the best
of both worlds, wide as well as zoom. This month, we take the Standard Zoom lenses
from manufacturers, made for mirrorless cameras and pit them against each other to
test their performance.

Chromatic Aberration
The Canon RF 28-70mm f/2L USM was tested for
chromatic aberration on an industry standard application and
the lens exhibitted a CA of 0.58 pixels which is the highest of
the three. Nikon's NIKKOR Z 24-70mm f/2.8 S lens exhibited
the least value of 0.29 pixels and sandwiched in between,
Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 Di Ill RXD exhibited a value of 0.40
pixels.

Distortion
After extensively shooting with the three lenses and
comparing them, all the three lenses exhibited perspective
distortion as the building captured looks tilted slightly towards
the left. Canon exhibited a considerable amount of distortion
compared to the other two, while Tamron had the lowest in
all three of them and Nikon was somewhere in between both
the lenses. All the three lenses exhibited a negligible barrel
distortion at 24mm.

Conclusion

Canon RF 28-70mm f/2L USM -

The Canon RF 28-?0mm f/2L USM lens costs 2,40,000
approximately which is the most expensive in this shootout.
It also is heavier and bulkier than the competition. But it
also offers the widest aperture range amongst any lens in
this category. In terms of performance it is fast, accurate
and gives true to life pictures. It also gives the best Bokeh
performance in this category. But where it has a lot of pluses
it is also had the highest Chromatic Abberation value of 0.58
pixels and also displayed perspective distortion.

Nikon NIKKOR Z 24-70mm f/2.8 S-

Nikon NIKKOR Z 24-?0mm f/2.8 S sits in the mid range
when it comes to the lenses in this shootout. It is priced
at 1 ,90,00 approximately and is a light and compact lens.
It is very functional and delivers sharp and good results.
Although the images are sharp and accurate they seemed to
be slightly over saturated sometimes. In terms of the overall
performance the Nikon was very consistent with the least
CA value of 0.29 pixels. Bokehs were well rounded with the
lens also displaying minimal distortion.

Tamron 28-75mmf/2.8 Di Ill RXD Lens -

The Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 Di Ill RXD lens was the cheapest
in this shootout priced at 63,500 for the Sony mount. The
lens was the lightest in the catgory and slightly more compact
than the Nikon lens as well. In terms of the performance it
wasnt particularly outstanding when it came to the others,
especially when producing bokehs. But it really epitomised
value for money. It was consistent throughout the tests and
came out on top in most out of parameters in our tests.
With a CA value of 0.40 pixels the images were sharp and
pleasing to the eye when attached to the Sony A? Ill. It also
displayed the least perspective distortion and considering
its price to value ratio, the Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 Di Ill RXD
lens is the winner of this year's Standard Zoom Mirrorless
lens shootout.

For this test, we picked a colourful photograph, which also included extremely small details. The test follows the same process
of the earlier template tests, and each of the printers' output is gauged for reproduction of colours and details, as well as the time
taken to print. The Epson L850 took 2 minutes 1 5 seconds to print the image, whereas the Canon TS8270 took 2 minutes 1 2
seconds to print the picture. All the images were printed on a glossy media of A4 size. The outputs from both the printers were not
completely accurate, The Epson L850 output was oversaturated, and was not close to the original but the output from the Canon
TS8270 was the closest in terms of true colour reproduction, colour saturation, sharpness and overall print quality.

Images Per Minute (I PM) Test

The IPM test is the industry standard

to rate printers on, and we have been
conducting it for the past two years now.
We put the printers to test using the First
Set Out Time (FSOT) on short job and
following are the results.

WHAT IS IPM?
IPM is calculated through either of the three different methods which are Estimated SAturated Throughput (ESAT), First Set
Out Time (FSOT) and Effective ThroughPut (EFTP}. Each of these three methods use different sized jobs to print and have
different ways to time them. These are :
• FSOT for the short job.
• EFTP for the short, medium, and long jobs.
• ESAT for the medium job.
Short Job entails printing one 4-page file and timing it. Medium Job is printing one 4-page file, then repeatedly printing
that for 30 seconds more. And Long Job is printing one 4-page file, then repeatedly printing that for another 4 minutes. The
average results are the same for all three methods. We are using the FSOT method wherein we calculated the time taken for
completion of a Short Job, which means the time taken to print 4 pages from clicking the Print button on the PC to the last
page of the 4 page document being printed in full.

Epson L850
The Epson printer fared well but was slightly slower than Canon. It recorded an IPM of 1 .00.15.

Canon Pixma TS8270

The Canon TS8270 fared the best in this test. It recorded an IPM of 0.57.03.

Copy Test
For the copy test, we used the text template we designed earlier, and
tested the printers on how quickly they were able to copy it in colour
as well as black and white.
Epson L850
In the copy test, the Epson printer clocked a time of 31 .68
seconds in black and white copy, and 27.94 seconds in colour copy
coming second in the copy test.
Canon Pixma TS8270
The Canon printer recorded 14.36 seconds in the black and white
copy and 27.51 seconds in the colour copy. The Canon was the
fastest of the lot.

36 AsianPhotography - www.asianphotographyindia.com
-
Scan Test
This test was conducted by recording
time taken to scan one sheet of size A4
in colour.

Epson L850
The Epson printer took 23.34
seconds to scan.

Canon Pixma TS8270

The Canon TS8270 was the fastest
of the two clocking a time of 1 9.28
seconds.

Conclusion
Overall both the printers performed well barring a few challenges in their tests.

Epson L850
Setting up the L850 was a breeze with the printer
doing all the work after connecting it. Although the
printing time for Epson in most tests seemed slightly
behind Canon, the overall quality of the output was
pretty good. The colours seemed well saturated and
accurate in most cases. Overall, it seemed to be a good
performer, however it lost some points when it came to
pricing. At 29,099 the L850 was more expensive than
the competition which nudged the favour towards the
competition.

Canon Pixma TS8270

Off the bat the Canon printer wasn't the fastest
when it came to installation and start up. But once
completed the printer flew through the tests with faster
times than Epson. Although the race was very close
when it came to the timings, the TS8270 was able
to deliver a consistent performance at a great price,
making it a product that strikes a balance of value and
performance. At 18,435 the TS8270 is a good overall
performer coming out on top in most of our tests.
And hence it wins the All-in-One shootout this year.

First War of Independence of 1 857, the
Government of India Act 1 858 led the

of India. Kolkata (Formerly known as
Calcutta) and Mumbai were two of the
main hubs for development owing to
their proximity to the sea thus allowing
for free flowing of water vessels such as
ships etc which were essential for trade
back then.

Key events that led to India's

Independence
The fight for independence was long
and hard. It is not possible to cram 200
years of history into a small feature but
let us talk about some of the key dates
which impacted the fight to freedom
for India. One of the first major events
in this timeline was India's First War
of Independence. The Sepoy Riots or
Sepoy Mutiny which happened in 1857
was the first uprising against the tyranny
of Britain. Sepoy is a term for Indian
soldiers serving under the British Raj.
Another historic event was the formation
of The Indian National Congress (also
known as the Congress Party/INC) in

AC C ESS O R I ES FOR
V I D EO S H OOT I N G
W I T H YOU R CAM E R

Buying a DSLR/Mirrorless camera is just the first step in your video journey. Part of
the fun is going out, step by step adding an accessory here and there over the years,
and learning the ins and outs of video making along the way. Whether you are just
jumping into the world of video for the first time, or already have a few years under
your belt and are ready to take it to the next level. Shooting video with your DSLR/
Mirrorless camera is easy. You just switch over to video mode and move your camera
at something beautiful or interesting. But, if you want to get serious about shooting
motion, having the right gear will really help you out. Here is a list of accessories that
will make your movie making more enjoyable and more amazing.

Camera shake is not good for still images, but it can

be really bad when shooting video, so a sturdy set of
legs is necessary. For legs, you will need something
that is going to be extremely stable and as light as
possible, so you can carry it around. Carbon fiber
is good, but not totally necessary. Stability and
portability are your priorities. The head is where
things get a little more particular. If you do not plan
on moving the camera while it is on the tripod for pan
shots, any kind of tripod will do fine, but sooner or
later you are going to surpass the static shot. Fluid
heads are a great choice because the movement will
be smoother. Plus, they rotate on flat surface, making
them more useful than many ball heads .

50 AsianPhotography - www.asianphotographyindia.com

You are going to do the of your
composing and focussing using the
screen on the back of your camera, and
that can cause some issues. Reflection
on screen can be a big problem if you
are shooting in harsh light, and a Ioupe
will help you prevent that. You will also
be focussing manually using the screen,
so having more expansion on your
screen will give you a better look at your
subject for focussing.

Audio Recorder
Having an audio recorder offers a bit more
skillfulness than an on-camera microphone
because you can literally drop it wherever you
want and let it record. If you're going to be
shooting video of a function or event, you can
drop it in an audio sweet spot and shoot from
wherever you want to. They are also usually a
bit more customisable and easier to monitor.
On the downside, you will have to sync the
audio up with the video in post processing,
which adds time to your editing.

Shotgun Microphone
Shotgun microphone typically sits on a hot
shoe and records audio directly into the
camera. These can be good for outdoor
interviews and it offers a definite transformation
over your camera's built in recorder. They can
be very directional, though, so you will likely
only get a good audio signal out of things
happening directly in front of you. They also
need to stay bound to your camera, so the
sound might change as the camera moves
around.

Lavalier Microphone
A must have microphone if you are going to do
a lot of documentary style interviews. These
mics are attached directly to a person's collar
and provides great quality when it comes
to recording someone's voice. Until you get
far along in your video making career, you
probably won't need one.

Shutter speed can be a difficult thing when shooting
video. You are limited on the slow end by the frame
rate at which you're shooting. When your shutter
speed gets too fast, your footage starts to look
shaky and unnatural. A neutral density filter will help
you keep that in check. It serves the same function
as it would in a photography scenario, letting you
use a wider aperture in harsh light situations. But,
it also lets you slow down your shutter speed
under similarly bright lights to keep things looking
smooth. You can get variable neutral density filters
that change strength as you rotate them, but they
are very expensive. You can also get a few different
strengths and stack them if you need to cut more
light before it hits the sensor.

HO video footage requires a lot of space on your memory cards, so

you need to make sure you have the high capacity ones to handle your
shooting. Speed is equally as important and a little bit hard to understand.
If you're shooting with SO cards, look for a class 1 0 card. It's fast enough
to keep up with that massive data flow. You can likely use a class 6 card,
but faster is better. You will also notice that it's quicker to upload your
footage from a fast card. Plus point is that it might even help you get more
burst rate out of your camera in photography mode. CF cards tend to be
faster as compared to SO cards. Pro cards tend to record at 600x or even
1 OOOx, which can keep up with your video recording without any problem.
The only disadvantage for faster cards comes with price, so look at your
plan and get the fastest, most reliable cards you can buy.

Editing video from a OSLR/Mirrorless

camera has accomplished an amazing
mixture of being both simple and
incredibly complex at the same time.
Compared to film editing, it is much
easier. But, once you start to get
serious about editing, the amount of
quality you can add is limitless. Starting
with a simple method rather than going
into a full-on editing suite can often be
a good point of entry for a beginner.
Simple programs like Adobe's Premiere
Elements, are much cheaper than full
on suites and make simple edits easier.
Getting your hands on editing with pro
software can make you feel stressed
and even make you give up, which is
the worst case scenario. As you edit,
you will start to get a feel for whether or
not you need more advanced software.

52 AsianPhotography - www.asianphotographyindia.com

Camera movement is important for making video, but it's also one of
the hard parts for still photographers when making the transition. Rails
help a camera move smoothly in ways that a panning tripod head can
not assist. They are good for tracking subjects as they pass, adding
movement to otherwise static scenes, they can also be used to get
tighter or wider on a subject without zooming. You can get a basic set
of rails on which you actually need to slide the camera, or you can go
for a set-up where the camera actually slides automatically. They are
very. Unless you are shooting at a high level, you will not use it much,
so look into renting to try before you get one.

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

You can't always keep your camera on a tripod or a monopod,

but a shoulder rig can come in very handy when it comes to video
shooting. Not only does it provide stability by giving the camera
a way to rest on your shoulder. Some also give you more choice
when it comes to attaching accessories like microphones and
external monitor. They are costly, but it can make a big difference if
you're shooting a lot of video.

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

Gimbals are great for free motion. Steadicams allows camera operators to move
around freely before gimbals came along, but thanks to the fact that they are
lightweight and compact, operators can take their camera to any place or through
anything and still get a smooth output. You can capture fabulous videos from various
angles with great stability by shooting with a gimbal. You can rotate your camera
smoothly in different directions by attaching your DSLR/Mirrorless to gimbals. It will
provide you with three axes to rotate on your handheld video camera.

The three-inch screen on the back of your camera

seems large, but when you're using it to focus, review
footage, compose and handle just about every other
part of the video-making process, it tends to seem
small. You can get a vast variety of external screens,
most of which attach to your camera through HDMI.
The extra screen will suck up battery power, but it will
give you a much clearer view of what your shots will
look like. If you have a Ioupe for your LCD screen, this
might not be as critical, but every shooter has their
taste. Do what your eye and your budget tells you.

TIPS AND TECHS

The biggest problem with cameras and lenses are that they are fragile and expensive.

UPGRADE YOUR CAMERA STRAP
The secret to protecting your camera from falling
is pretty simple: You r camera should never fall
directly onto the ground from a height that can
damage it. Instead, it should be attached to your
body at all times with a camera strap. As soon
as your camera comes out of your bag, put your
strap on. Once the strap comes off, your camera
goes back in your bag.

The neck strap that comes with the camera is fine

but you must replace it for a few reasons:
They are not very adjustable.
Hanging from your neck in front of your body isn't
the best place for your camera if you're trying to
do anything else.
You look stupid and it instantly marks you as a
tourist (and target for theft).

USE A BLOWER
If your gear does get a bit dusty or gets covered in sand, air can go a long way towards fixing any potential problems.
If your gear is a little wet from the rain, rather than leaving it sitting in your bag until you get home, put it somewhere safe
to air out. The water will evaporate and all will be well. Even entry level cameras are designed to deal with the occasional
splash.
On the other hand, if dust or sand is the problem, don't use a lens cloth to wipe it off. You will either rub the particles in
further or basically just sandpaper your gear. Instead, use a blower to remove it.
There are many blowers available in market like FOTGA Professional Rocket Cleaning Air Blower, LS Photography Rocket
Air Blaster Blower and Giottos Rocket-Air Blower AA1 900

PROTECT YOUR LENS FROM
SCRATCHES AND DUST
While UV filters don't do much to
protect your lenses from falls, they can
protect them from scratches and keep
dust away from the front element. Also,
some lenses are not weather sealed
unless there is a filter attached. For this
reason, it is a good idea to keep a UV
filter, if not permanently on your lens,
then at least in your camera bag.
Cheap UV filters will noticeably affect
your images. So, don't buy UV filters
with no name brands instead you can
go for brands like Hoya, Goja, Tiffen,
B+W etc.

AVOID TOUCHING THE -

LCD
While shooting try to avoid
touching the LCD or lens. Oil
from your skin might smudge
the lens and LC D, which affect
your images or how you view
them. Clean the lens and LCD
with a microfiber cloth to avoid
scratches anytime you see the
smudge or fingerprints.

HANDS-FREE UMBRELLA
A newer type in rain
protection, a hands-tree
umbrella keeps away the

work best on rainy days
without much wind. There
are chances that the wind
could push some of the rain
towards the gear. To prevent
that you can add-an umbrella
holder that attaches an
umbrella to a monopod or

CAMERA RAIN COVERS

A camera rain cover is
an important part of any
photographer's kit. There
are many budget friendly
camera rain covers available
in the market that are worth
spending a few rupees on, for
better protection and easier
access to controls. There

TIPS AND TECHS

The recent years have observed the evolution of photography from film cameras
to mirrorless. From an activity with a primary function of getting photos for official
documents, photography has become a hobby for many, and a profession for others.
Along with a camera and all the other equipment, tripods have become one of the
most used accessories helping photographers in clicking great pictures.

ripods are mainly used by photographers for the stability and their construction limits their ability to support a full-fledged
of the camera when clicking in low light situations and DSLR. However, they are ideal for small mirrorless cameras.

Pocket tripods are mini versions of the standard tripod, made

for keeping portability as the topmost priority for the user. They

Studio tripods are heavy tripods meant for professional use and
handling a large front camera. They are generally big and heavy
as compared to the others and not recommended for travelling
with. You ought to buy a studio tripod if either you wish to use
it for motionless use during video or if you wish to put it to
specific professional use. Otherwise, a travel tripod will do, to
fulfill all your outdoor and indoor needs.

Mono pod
Monopods are modified tripods with only one leg. They are
useful as they wipe out camera shake to zero. Needless to
say, with just one leg they stand lighter and easier to carry
and handle as compared to the standard tripod. Though they
limit the photographer's movement to a large extent, they are
still helpful to wildlife and sports photographers who find easy
support for weight of the camera.

Studio Tripod

Specialised Tripod
Specialised tripods are special purpose tripods to supply
you with more choice in terms of placement of the tripods to
capture photographs from different angles or at various places.
These are generally used for custom uses or highly customised
and specific applications. Some of the types are Suction Cup
Tripods and Flexible leg tripods.

Now that you have gathered a fair idea of the tripod type
choices that you can buy, you need to give consideration to
the various aspects that decide what makes a tripod fit for your
use. As a prospective buyer of a tripod, you must weigh the
following elements in order to arrive at the one that you will be
bringing home.

TRIPOD BUYER'S GUIDE

Here is a list of a few specifications that the buyer should keep in mind while looking to buy a tripod.

• Collapsing Size
Collapsing size is the size of the tripod when it is closed. This is an important factor as it decides which of the
categories your tripod falls into. With this information, you can easily choose one which fits your requirements.

• Weight
The weight of the tripod that you will be using should be to your comfort, and the only driving factor while
considering the weight. For example, if you would be traveling a lot, it is better to choose a lighter one. If you are
to be using it in your studio, you might go for a heavier model with better features. Tripods made of carbon fiber
are lighter as compared to those of aluminum, though the tripods are considerably expensive.

• Maximum Height Extension

The key function of the tripod is to enable you to place the camera at a variety of heights to position it perfectly.
Therefore, extension height is one of the first considerations for a tripod. If it falls too short, the photographer
will have to bend down making him uncomfortable. Moreover, every extra centimeter can come in handy when
shooting on uneven terrain or over obstacles.

• Load Rating
The tripod must be able to support the weight of the camera equipment. You must be careful to choose that, it
can support a weight that is fairly larger (approximately 1 .25 times -1.75 times) as compared to what you plan to
use. This is to keep a margin of safety. While you shoot you place your hands over the camera and apply some
extra force that the tripod has to support. This should be taken into account. Moreover, you might add some extra
equipment such as a battery grip or use a heavier camera or lens in the future and a slightly higher rating will take
care of that

• Tripod Head
A tripod head does not come with the tripod and has to be bought separately, specially for expensive tripods. The
head secures the camera to the tripod and controls its movement. The head and the tripod should have the same
load ratings so that you don't face any problems after buying. The tripod heads come in different forms, pan-tilt,
ball-head, gimbal head and many more. The pan-tilt head has a single control or a dual one depending on allowing
movement in one direction (horizontal), or both directions (horizontal and vertical). The ball-head is better than
pan-tilt as it is flexible and has a better operation with better security for the camera. The gimbal head is a special
head to be used for heavier lenses.

• Construction Material
Keep in mind that the material is important for deciding the strength and the weight of the tripod. Tripods are
specifically made of aluminium, carbon fiber, and titanium, though wood might also be used in larger tripods.
Pocket tripods are made up of plastic too in addition to the other materials that have been mentioned. Aluminum
and Titanium tripods are, needless to mention, heavier and cheaper as compared to the carbon fiber tripods. It
should be noted that when it comes to sturdiness, aluminium beats carbon fiber.

• Quick Release System

A quick release system is available for securing the camera to the head. The best-known system is Arka Swiss
quick release system which is used as an informal standard among manufacturers of the quick release system.
This system is an improvement over the previously used threaded system which was highly inconvenient and
cumbersome to use. Buying one with this system would help you in smooth operation. So far we have had a look
at the essentials to be mindful of when buying a tripod. Now, we discuss some of the best products available that
you could buy and why you should buy them.

Tripods
Table top tripods are inexpensive, light and tiny tripods that lets you fix your
phone on any flat surface and take completely sturdy shots so you never have
to be concerned about blurry images. A secondary choice to table top tripod
is the Gorilla Pod Stand. The Gorilla Pod comes with a universal clamp for
any smartphone and is configured to work not only as a stand, but to secure
to any bar or pole with its wrap-able rubber legs. Group the legs collectively
and it works as a grip mount just like the standard table top tripod. Frequently
you can find multi functional grip sticks that combines desktop tripod, grip
handler, monopod and mini tripod all in one. Joby GripTight PRO TelePod
and Tripod iKiip Grip Pro Multifunction Camera Stand are good examples of
multifunction tripods.
The Joby GripTight PRO TelePod Tripod is four accessories coiled into
one. It looks like a table top tripod, but widen the mount and you have an
elevated tripod. You can close the legs and use it as a handle with the mount
prolonged and it becomes a selfie stick. Close both the legs and extend the
mount and you acquire a hand grip for taking close shots. Compact full size
tripods are a great add-on to your phone photography equipment. Tripods are
important to help you take better photos when you are travelling. It's perfect
for capturing landscape photos and videos using the telephoto lens. Just get
a smartphone mount if one is not included with the tripod.

Such mounts can be screwed to the

that you can use to clamp and secure

Storage
When you go for a long trip or take lots of photos and videos on your smartphone, it pays to have backup during travel and a
way to add more storage to your smartphone. You should not be dependent on the internal memory of your phone. Continue to
do what you love without thinking about running out of space with a mobile storage solution. Having an external mobile storage
option means you are not held back by the lack of space on your phone. For most Android smartphones, it is as simple as adding a
MicroSD storage card to a a microSD card slot or second SIM slots that expands the storage. Not all microSD cards have the same
read/write speed. Some cards are faster at reading and writing than others and are more suitable for saving high quality images and
Full HD or 4K video footage. SanDisk Ultra is one such card. But, before you get your microSD card, do check the maximum size
readable on your smartphone. What if your phone does not support microSD cards like iPhones or some Android smartphones?
For smartphone with no extermal storage, get a flash drive with lightning, USB Type-C or MicroUSB to USB interface. Such a
device lets you plug into the smartphone's charging and data port adding more storage to your phone. You can then backup your
photos and free up the space on the internal memory or take photos and videos and save them straight to the flash drive.

After buying Camera and lenses, next comes the accessories. From Camera Flashes

So, if you are looking to complete your epic portrait lighting setup or getting ready to

Camera Flashes
Camera flash is one of the most important
equipment when it comes to portrait
photography. Portrait photography also involves
a wide variety of lighting equipment, such as on
camera flash and off camera flash.

On camera flash
While branded on-camera flashes from
companies like Canon and Nikon usually offer
the most features, the problem with that is that
they are not cheap. The good news is if you are
on a budget, a great on-camera flash doesn't
have to cost you that much.

The YONGNUO YN560-IV Speed-light is a flash

unit that is compatible with a wide range of
cameras.

Off-Camera Flashes
On-camera flashes can also be used off-camera.
However, dedicated off-camera flashes, such as
a set of studio lights, can provide even more
flexibility in creating the lighting effects you want.

Reflector and diffuser
A light reflector is an specialised reflective surface used to re-direct light
towards a given subject. Light reflectors are effective specially when you are
shooting portraits. It helps you to light-up those areas where the the direct
light is not reachable, like the areas around the neck and under the chin.
In photography the main purpose of a diffuser is to diffuse bright harsh light
and make it softer and spread it across a wide area and reduce the unwanted
glare caused by flash lights.
Usually there are four types of reflectors and one diffuser bundled in one pack
which consists of white, silver, golden, black and diffuser.
White: A white reflector surface is the default choice for reflecting light - it
gives soft, neutral illumination for a natural look.
Silver: Silver is the preferred option in duller conditions as it reflects more
light. Steer clear in sunlight though, as it'll be too harsh.
Gold: Go for gold when shooting during sunset to maintain a warm look. Use
sparingly, as it's easy to make your model look too bronzed. diffuser panel - this is great for softening
Black: A black 'reflector' doesn't reflect at all - it simply shields (or flags) light direct light. This diffuser can then be

TIPS AND TECHS

Camera accessories are an integral part of a photographer's kit. There are several
accessories, some enhance the quality of the photographs, some allow for better
shooting in diffuicult light conditions, some simply help you keep your camera
healthy and clean. In this article we talk about some such accessories that you may
have thought of buying but ignored, thinking you don't need it as we delve into the
reasons why you should buy them!

Most of us are aware of what UV filters

are and what they do, but very few
invest in circular polarizers not just
because of their usually higher prices
but because of the lack of knowledge
of what they actually do. Graduated
ND filters and circular polarizers are
extremely useful! Circular polarizers
filter out unwanted reflections while the
Graduated ND filter allows 'variable light
transmission'. In some cases, these
filters can help completely change an
Image.

Most amateurs and even most

professionals use the stock camera strap
that comes with the DSLR. While there
is no harm in doing that, in the long run,
carrying a heavy camera and lenses can
be detrimental to your health. Carrying a
heavy bag with no back support can cause
problems such as back aches and neck
pain. Most camera bags cost more than
normal bags because these bags not only
protect the camera from damage by using
padded protective layers, but also are
designed in a way that allows the weight
to be evenly distributed on your shoulders
and back. A good camera strap sometimes
will also have a hip strap that distributes
the weight of the camera and lens.

it is advisable to carry a monopod.

We rely heavily on memory cards during our shoots and yet we hardly carry a
backup card. Most amateurs and semi-professionals do not understand the
I
importance of a few extra memory cards. While many may only think in terms of
I
the capacity, thinking that for an hour's shoot, a single 64GB card will be enough,
I we also have to think about the safety of the photographs. Many a times, memory
I cards get corrupted or stop working. This can be a death knell for the photographer
I if something like this happens on a shoot. Always carry extra memory cards in case
I
something happens to the one you are using.

Camera manufacturers market their cameras as being 'Weatherproof'. This means

that their cameras can take a small splash or two or a light drizzle. However, most
amateurs seem to think that water will not affect their DSLR and take it out in heavy
rainfall. This should be strictly avoided and a waterproof camera case will help you
do just that! These cases not only protect your camera from water damage but can
also save it from dust and dirt or sand. Most waterproof cases last for the entire
span of the camera's life so investing in one may not be a bad idea, specially if you
like shooting in adverse weather conditions.

While tripods have been around for quite

some time now, Gorillapods or flexible
tripods are a great new addition to the
accessory line-up for photographers.
These tripods are small, handy and can
adapt to different surface and settings for
shoots. The gorillapod legs are bendable
and can cling on to many different
surfaces. It can be hung from trees,
attacked to rods, grills, bikes and more.
Many of these gorillapods also can be
quite heavy duty as well!

Lens and camera sensors are extremely delecate.
Being made from glass and semiconductors, these
important parts can get damaged if not taken care of.
The camera lens is opened frequently, specially if you
have more than one lens. This causes dirt and dust
to fall on the inner glass lenses and also the camera
mirror. Sometimes, for mirrorless cameras mostly, dust
can fall directly on the sensor. While the sensor should
not be cleaned by a user and should only be handled
by a professional camera repair agent, the lens can
be cleaned and the camera body can be cleaned too.
Buying a lens and camera cleaner kit can help you
in this. The kit consists of microfiber cloths, blowers,
brushes and cleaning liquids that can clean dust and
grime off of your camera and lenses.

The 50mm lens is an absolute pocket rocket. It is a prime lens, with extremely good
low light shooting capabilities and is quite pocket friendly as well! These lenses are
available for a nominal price of 6000-8000 range and can be used to shoot street,
portrait and much more! Due to these lenses going as low as f/1 .8 (for the cheapest
version), they can be used in low light situations as well. Canon also has a 40mm
2.8 pancake lens that is extremely small and handy.

Powerbanks can be extremely

helpful for a lot of reasons. While
powerbanks cannot charge most
cameras directly while shooting,
there are powerbank converters
available for specific cameras that
replace your camera's batteries with
a device called a coupler, that can
directly draw power from a power
bank. This allows the user to carry
multiple power banks which are much
cheaper than buying multiple DSLR
batteries. Another key thing to notice
here is that most standard 1500 mAh
powerbanks have almost 1 5 times
more charge than a standard camera
battery. You can simply put the
power bank in your pocket while it is
connected to the camera or attach it
to a camera cage while shooting!

The larger screen helps you look at the

This brings us to other problems that
can occur during shoots. Lens flare is the
phenomenon of scattered or flared light

TIPS AND TECHS

Camera bags are an integral part of a photog rapher's life. Each photog rapher carries
equipment that costs lakhs of rupees on shoots. So naturally, bags are very i mportant
to make sure that the equipment is safe, secured and can be transported from one
point to another without any problem. These bags range from simple sling bags to
more elaborate rolling cases.

MESSENGER BAGS

These are hip, handy and extremely

portable and fashionable. Messenger bags
are extremely flexible and can be paired
with casual. These bags can be used
by people of all ages right from college
students to older gentlemen. Since these
bags are always handy, taking out a camera
and keeping it back in the bag is extremely
easy. Messenger bags can be made of
waterproof material such as polypropylene
or can be made from simple canvas. These
bags usually have compartments for a
single camera and a single lens/flash etc.

CAMERA POUCHES

Camera pouches are small bags that can store just one
camera with a lens. These were widely used when point
and shoot cameras were in vogue but has fallen from
preference since then. The pouches are great to protect
your camera during family vacations but they generally
do not have enough padding to prevent the camera
from damages in case of a fall.

86 AsianPhotography - www.asianphotographyindia.com
-
SLING BAGS

Sling bags are shoulder bags that has one bag strap which runs from one
shoulder and connects to the hip. It makes taking equipment out from the bag
easier but puts a lot of pressure on the shoulder since the entire weight rests
on one shoulder only. This is why sling bags do not have too much space and
can store one camera and a few lenses. The main compartment has removable
internal dividers which can be customised for multipurpose storage. There is
generally also a top compartment that can store smaller accessories like an
external flash, card case and so on.

BACKPACKS

Backpacks are the most widely used bag types for photographers. These are shoulder
bags that have different compartments that suit all photographers' needs. These bags
can differ in sizes and shapes but are generally on the larger end. Some bags come with
extra shoulder supports like metal support rings at the back. The backpacks can carry a
photographer's essentials quite comfortably and has compartments for everything ranging
from a Laptop to a tripod or monopod or even pouches for bottles. Backpacks are widely
used by photographers for longer assignments and some of these bags can also carry
clothes etc. These are also easier to carry around through airports as camera bags like
these do not generally require the user to take out the camera to put it in a tray while passing
through security.

ROLLING CASES

These are essentially equipment carrying trolley bags. Rolling cases more often than not have
hard outer shells with compartments for equipment inside and a handle to pull the trolley
around. They can have either two or four wheels and are useful when you are carrying a large
number of equipment while travelling. Airports can sometimes handle luggage very badly which
may damage the equipment. So, having a rolling case can help. These can also be super useful
if you have to walk a lot on your assignment. But make sure that you are walking on an even
surface or the wheels will get damaged.

CAMERA HOLSTER

This is not a bag but can be a great subsitute for one in short assignments.
These holsters are sometimes double shouldered and sometimes belt
mounted. These allow you to keep your hands free in between shoots. A
great accessory for trekking and hiking since you will probably already have
a rucksack on your bag and may not have enough space to carry a camera.
These also allow for quick access to the camera whenever you need it. These
holsters also allow you yo not bumb your camera hanging from a strap every
time you bend down for something as it firmly attaches to your hip.

Conceptual Photography involves

a lot of thought process , noting
down every element that's
important and a self-validation
of about 1 00 times before you
create one practically. Now
creating a picture that speaks of
a story or rather screams, that
any lay man connects to and yet
still leaving a little space for the
audience to draw conclusion to
that story. A conceptual series
when created, every frame
needs to speak! I have tried to
portray and depict domestic
violence that commonly occurs
in many households, but is often
unnoticed. Domestic violence
is any kind of abusive behavior
that happens at the hands of a
family member, women, children
and the elderly are often the soft
targets. Illiteracy, economical
dependence and the misogynistic
patriarchal society are some of
the attributing factors of this.
Domestic violence is defined by
the section 3 of the Protection of
Women from Domestic Violence
Act, 2005 as any act which harms,
or endangers the health, safety,
life in physical, sexual, verbal or
emotional, economical or social
abuse. T he law gives an effective
shelter and deals strictly with
the felons. But making a law is
not sufficient, actively standing
up against domestic violence
when one spots it happening is
important. Every human deserves
the basic honour and respect.
Domestic violence has no place
in civilised society and should be
strongly dealt with.
