Grammar Mini Lesson- Comma (for Series Separator)- 6th Grade

1. Learning Outcomes:

a. SWBAT locate where the commas belong in a series after given examples.

b. SWBAT explain why it is important to use a comma before the conjunction.

2. Procedure:

a. 10:00-10:03: Students will log into kahoot.it to take a five-question pre-quiz on

how much they already know about commas as series separators. “Do you

remember using these in your writing before? If you did not know any of the

answers in the kahoot quiz, then don’t worry because we will be learning all of

the rules for this and its importance today!”

b. 10:03-10:06: Pass the handout to each student and have them read the five

examples aloud at the groups in their tables. Have them decide together why they

think it is important that the commas are placed where they are. Have one group

share their answer and continue until a group gives you the correct answer. While

the students are doing this, quickly show them the two examples on the

PowerPoint showing why commas are important. “Decide as a group why you

think it is important that the sentences have commas placed where they are? Why

do you think the third example does not use a comma in-between cookies and

milk?”
 c. 10:06-10:09: Have each student write two sentences similar to the examples

without including commas. Trade the sentences with a partner and have the

partner add the commas where they need to be. Have a person from each group

write one of the sentences on the board as an example.

3. Models are on the worksheet, 1-3 are by teacher and 4-5 are found in literature.

4. Practice: students adding commas to their partner’s sentences

5. Assessment: if students write the sentences on the board with the commas in the correct

space, then it shows that they have learned the material.
