1. Learning Outcomes:
a. SWBAT locate where the commas belong in a series after given examples.
2. Procedure:
how much they already know about commas as series separators. “Do you
remember using these in your writing before? If you did not know any of the

b. 10:03-10:06: Pass the handout to each student and have them read the five
examples aloud at the groups in their tables. Have them decide together why they
think it is important that the commas are placed where they are. Have one group
share their answer and continue until a group gives you the correct answer. While
the students are doing this, quickly show them the two examples on the
PowerPoint showing why commas are important. “Decide as a group why you
think it is important that the sentences have commas placed where they are? Why
do you think the third example does not use a comma in-between cookies and
milk?”
c. 10:06-10:09: Have each student write two sentences similar to the examples
without including commas. Trade the sentences with a partner and have the
partner add the commas where they need to be. Have a person from each group
