I remember once, after securing an ‘A’ grade in a school mathematics test in
8th standard, when my father, usually bereft of positive adjectives, said something that has stuck with me. He said that no profession in this world is out of reach for a person with command over mathematics. For good reason, I’ve always held onto this thought, and developed what I’d call a flaming love affair with mathematics. Doing exceptionally well in National Mathematics Olympiads and securing good grades in college mathematics courses are outcomes of my strong hold over the subject. While fascinated by abstract math, I found its applications in finance equally intriguing. A general aptitude in math, coupled with college courses in mathematics, statistics and economics eventually led me to a job with a big investment bank, Citigroup with the Treasury and Trades Solution Division. My project here required me to develop a novel Notional pooling framework for some corporate clients. With extensive programming in Java and Python, I successfully implemented the framework, and consequently received appreciation. Growing up in a country like India, one can’t help but feel the need to bring massive societal changes; more than half of India’s population still registers below the poverty line. In the long run, I want to be like Bruce Wayne, with slight modifications. I wish to earn enough so that I can take my countrymen out of suffering. But I know this can’t be done overnight. I want to get a platform from where I can solve people’s problems and at the same time work in the field of finance. Impact investment is one such area where I will use my experience and knowledge to help in funding of businesses that will shape the life of the people I wanted to help. I believe that an undergrad degree at India’s premier college, in as quantitative a field as engineering, has equipped me with an enviable skill set. I describe myself as a slogger, and genuinely consider hard work to be my principal path to success. Leadership positions at my college have complemented my exploits with finance, and have given me confidence and sparked a will to succeed in this field. Additionally, all-round activities at college have imparted useful time-management skills. Impact Investment Exchange is a great company which is doing a great business , and seeing the impact it has on the lives of people , makes me desperate to join the company. As soon as I came to know about the Analyst Program, I started writing this motivation letter. Although I get paid well at Citi and has been working for 7 months here, I want to quit my well paid job to join IIX because the work we are expected to do in IIX is more satisfying for me as an individual. Also Singapore is a great place to work. As an analyst I aspire to learn a lot on the job from my peers and seniors and I wish to take Leadership roles in Impact Investment space in the long run. I am one of those crazy people who believe that even the poorest can be uplifted to become the richest if provided with opportunities and funding. I would like to walk you through my life. I am from a below poverty line family in India and through Government investing in me , I got good education at top institute in India , IIT , which is known for producing leaders like Sundar Pichai , current Google CEO. Also I got invited to lot of Leadership forums like Harvard Emerging Leaders Program. I have done a fully funded internship in UK for working on a project for Developing countries. Overall I can say I have that passion to do something for the neglected community who get lesser opportunities. I am a guy who dreams of getting to wall street, but never at the cost of seeing my community streets in pain. So Impact Investment is my field. I say this with full credibility and confidence. Please give me a chance and I will do my best to create an impact.
