II. Insights gleaned from the journal

Why is it important to understand personality? Well from an academic

perspective it is just well interesting, but from a life perspective it is so much
more than that. The better we understand ourselves and other people, the
more successful we’ll be in dealing with people and situations; and getting it
right. Psychology may be an academic discipline, but understanding
personality it is a much more practical subject, it is about using psychology
to your advantage in everyday situations, to ‘get’ people, to influence, help
and support, to get your point across, in a way that's right for you, to better
understand and shape decision-making, to motivate and manage people,
and deal with conflict and most importantly to understand and manage our
own impact on other people.

So sometimes it is important to differentiate between ‘psychology,’ the

subject and ‘the subjects,’ is the rest of us with all our foibles and
idiosyncrasies. And like everything else practice makes perfect so using the
Character Analysis can really help as it breaks down the elements into
observable situations.

III. Application of Insights in Relation to

A. Research
 Trying to determine which theories are and are not accepted by
the scientific community can be difficult, especially in an area of
research as broad as psychology. More than ever before, we
have an incredible amount of information at our fingertips, and a
simple internet search on any given research topic might result
in a number of contradictory studies. In these cases, we are
witnessing the scientific community going through the process of
reaching a consensus, and it could be quite some time before a
consensus emerges. For example, the hypothesized link between
exposure to media violence and subsequent aggression has been
debated in the scientific community for roughly 60 years. Even
today, we will find detractors, but a consensus is building.

B. Practice

 Each one of us has a vastly different personality that has been

morphed from a combination of our experiences and our cognitive
processes. In turn, this personality helps define not only who we
are, but how we behave. From a counseling perspective,
understanding an individual's personality is crucial because it
helps guide the therapeutic process into a more definitive and
effective manner, correlating the sessions in tune with the mind
of the individual seeking guidance.
