1. How to connect to switch.

Two ways to connect to RUGGEDCOM Switch:

+RS232 connection:

Use Null Modem cable to connect to the switch and use terminal software to interface it. Terminal
configuration should be: 8 bits, no parity operation at 57.6 Kbps. Hardware and software flow control
must be disabled.

Select a terminal type of VT100, use <CR> key to start to communication when the connection is
ready.

+LAN Connection:

Use Telnet sever and connect to it via LAN connection:

Command: Telnet <Switch IP Address>
Default IP Address Type: Static
Default IP Address: 192.168.0.1
Default Subnet: 255.255.255.0

Use Web Browser like IE, note: disable proxy setting for LAN in IE setting before try to connect.

The interface will be the same with terminal software use RS232 connection.
Administrator Password: admin
Guest Password: guest
Use arrow key, enter, and escape key to explore the menu
Save and apply each time you change any parameter.

2. Comment Parameters.

IP Service:
IP Address Type: Static/Dynamic
IP Address: ranges from 1.0.0.0 to 233.255.255.255
Subnet: any value from 0 to 255, typical numbers use either 0 or 255.
Gateway: Require if manage the switch from another LAN via an IP Router

System Identification:

Information about the name, location, and contact person, it is easy to find out the device in complex
system.

3. Setup a ring backbone LAN.

Spanning Tree:

Use to configure Bridge RSPT parameters, support STP (802.1d)/RSTP (802.1w) (Rapid Spanning
Tree Protocol) RSTP will recognize a link fail and put another port into forwarding within
milliseconds, rapid recovery in rings.

Use RSTP in ring backbone configurations:

These bridges should not be used if network failover/recovery times are to be minimized.
Identify edge ports Ports that connect to host computers, IEDs and controllers may be set to edge
ports in order to guarantee rapid transitioning to forwarding as well as reduce the number of
topology change notifications in the network.

Choose the root bridge. The root bridge can be selected to equalize either the number of bridges,
number of stations or amount of traffic on either of its legs. It is important to realize that the ring will
always be broken in one spot and that traffic always flows through the root .

Assign bridge priorities to the ring. The strategy that should be used is to assign each bridge’s
priority to correspond to its distance from the root bridge. If the root bridge is assigned the lowest
priority of 0, the bridges on either side should use a priority of 4096 and the next bridges 8192 and
so on. As there are 16 levels of bridge priority available, this method provides for up to 31 bridges in
the ring. The highest priority will be the breaking switch.

Important Parameter:

Bridge Priority
The Bridge Priority provides a way to control the topology of the STP connected network. The bridge
with the lowest priority will become root. In the event of a failure of the root bridge, the bridge with
the next lowest priority will then become root.

Hello Time
This is the time between configuration messages issued by the root bridge. Shorter hello times may
result in faster detection of topology changes at the expense of moderate increases in STP traffic.

Max Age Time

The time a configuration message remains valid after being issued by the root bridge. Configure this
parameter with care when many tiers of bridges exist, or slow speed links (such as those used in
WANs) are part of the network
