UNIT 4
Dear Parent / Carer,

Your child is about to start unit 4 of their Science coursebook Macmillan Natural and Social
Science 2. The topic of this unit is More animals. In this unit, your child will learn to
 understand that some animals lay eggs
 understand that some animals are vertebrates and some are invertebrates
 understand the characteristics of reptiles
 name the most significant characteristics of amphibians
 name the most significant characteristics of insects
 understand about the characteristics of fish and their habitat
 classify animals according to their characteristics
Additionally in this unit, your child will investigate the life cycle of a frog and learn about an aquatic
ecosystem and determine which invertebrate animals have their habitat near the school. They will
say the More animals chant. This chant allows your child to review the key vocabulary of the unit
in context. Encourage your child to listen to the chant.

A bee is an insect… A snake is a reptile… A butterfly is an insect… A frog is an amphibian… A
shark is a fish… An ant is an insect… A chameleon is a reptile… A crocodile is a reptile… A
sardine is a fish…

They will also sing the Animals song.

Reptiles have a skeleton
And reptiles lay eggs
A crocodile is a reptile
A snake is a reptile, too
Amphibians have a skeleton
And amphibians lay eggs
A frog is an amphibian
A toad is an amphibian, too

Insects are invertebrates
What?
No skeleton!

The homework for this unit is to encourage your child to observe insects and other invertebrates
in the local environment and talk about their features. Encourage your child to record the animals
seen and choose one to illustrate on the worksheet.
