Food Studies
Fast, Delicious, Nutritious!

Welcome to Food Studies! This full year course offers you the opportunity to continue your study of
food and nutrition that you began in Food Studies 8. You will learn new food preparation skills to
create fast, delicious, nutritious meals. Please be open to trying new foods – you never know what you
will like until you try it!

Learning Objectives:
Students will:
 Understand kitchen safety, cleanliness, prevention of food-borne illness, and proper
measurement techniques in food preparation
 Show respect for other students and staff, as well as for the equipment and food to
be used in the lab
 Demonstrate effective time management skills
 Become adept at reading and following recipes accurately
 Become aware of nutrients and proper nutrition
 Use a variety of cooking methods to prepare food
 Learn about First Peoples traditional food use, including ingredients, harvesting/gathering,
storage, preparation, and preservation
 Learn the basics of meal planning for breakfast, lunch and dinner
 Increase their organizational and cooperative skills in both practical work and other assignments

Please note: Units of study are subject to change depending on


time constraints and student interests
CLASSROOM EXPECTATIONS:
 Classroom Agreements: attentive listening; mutual respect; right to pass/participate; no put downs
 Supplies: please bring to every class your binder for the course with all written work, items to write with:
pencil, pen, highlighter, and lined paper and a container to transport food home.
 Attendance and Punctuality: parents/guardians must call in, send a note, or email when you are absent or
late to class. Three unexcused absences or lates will result in a phone call home to parents/guardians. If no
late note from parent please ask for one from the office.
 Missed Labs: You may receive a maximum of three omits PER YEAR (one to two per term) on labs missed for
excused absences only. If you have more than three excused absences, missed labs may be made up at
home – see teacher for details.
 Missed Assignments and Tests: Within 3 days of an absence and upon receipt of a note all missed work:
labs, written assignments, and any quizzes/tests must be discussed with the teacher and a plan put in place to
make-up that missed work.
 Cell Phones and other electronic devices: Electronics may be listened to with teacher permission. At the
start of every lab they will be turned off and put away, including ear buds/head phones, as they aren’t sanitary
in a lab setting. If in use without permission they will be taken away until the end of the school day.
 Food and Drink: healthy food and drink are welcome – junk food is not permitted (pop, chips, coffee, candy
bars, Slurpee’s, energy drinks, etc.)
 Dietary Concerns/Allergies: please notify the teacher if you have any special dietary concerns, restrictions
or allergies.

ASSESSMENT FOR LEARNING – Self, Peer, & Teacher


Labs and assignments will be used to guide instruction and enhance student learning
with a strong emphasis on personal reflection and descriptive feedback that will work
towards student taking ownership for their learning.

EVALUATION Lab mark includes: preparation, work


Labs 50 – 60% habits (during demo and lab),
Assignments & Projects 15 - 25% demonstration of proper techniques and
Quizzes & Tests (practical & written) 15 - 25% methods, team work, and final product

Note: Students should expect a quiz or test, written or practical, at the end of each unit. There is no final exam or
cumulative test for this course.
