FACEBOOK: DIGITAL TAYO

Last Friday, October 18, 2019, we attended the seminar launched by Facebook
representatives here in The National Teachers College entitled “Digital Tayo”. “Digital Tayo,” is
the local adaptation of Facebook’s We Think Digital, a global digital literacy program that aims
to help people think critically and share thoughtfully online. NTC was the first institution as the
chosen partner of Facebook regarding this program. The program for me is more than just digital
literacy. It is about digital citizenship. It is designed to help us, Filipinos with vital skills, such as
critical thinking, empathy and being adept at using tools for online safety and well-being of not
just ourselves but also our family, friend and the community.

For the campaign, Facebook designed visual-heavy learning modules covering a wide
range of topics—from knowing one’s digital footprint and ensuring password and data security,
to spotting fake news—that can be presented offline or accessed for free. While digital literacy
has traditionally focused on equipping individuals with technical skills, Digital Tayo is
concentrated on softer skills, such as how to examine information critically, how to communicate
respectfully and how to display empathy on social media.

“Digital Tayo” have thought us a deeper meaning of using technology in a safe and
appropriate way. It is true that what we post online will stay there forever however, not all those
posts can make us and other people feel better. Often times, unconsciously we are hurting other
people through memes and rants. Our posts can also be a reflection of what we are as a person
and that can affect our reputation and relationship with other people. What we have shared or
posted online is encrypted there. We can apologize if we have hurt someone through those posts
but the scar may never heal. That is why it is really important that we think before we click.
