SCOPE, GENERAL DESCRIPTION & TECHNICAL SPECIFICATION

FOR FIRE DECTECTION AND FIRE FIGHTING SYSTEM


1.0 SCOPE & GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF WORK

The scope of work in general shall be for supply, and installations, testing, commissioning,
and handling over the following systems to the clients.

The work shall be executed in accordance with the rules and regulations of the local fire
authority, Fire Insurance Association of India - Tariff Advisory Committee rules, and
National Building Code of India – 2016, Part IV Fire & Life safety (latest amendment) and
Kerala Municipality Building Rules. In addition, the Fire Hydrant Installation shall also
confirm to and meet with the requirements set out by the following:

IS-1648: Code of Practice for fire safety of building (general) Fire Fighting Equipment

and its maintenance.

IS-3844: Code of Practice for installation of Internal Fire Hydrant in multistoried buildings.

All materials used in the work shall have Bureau of Indian Standards valid certification
stamped, marked or cast on the material in an accepted and approved manner.

Keeping in view the specific requirement of Fire Fighting Work, these specifications shall be
supplemented by schedule of quantities. In the event of any conflict between schedule of
quantities and other documents, the more stringent will apply and interpretation of
architect/consultant/client shall be final and binding.

It will be the responsibility of the contractor to get entire installation inspected by Fire Force
Authorities and obtain final NO OBJECTION Certificate from the Department. All statutory
payments in this connection shall be reimbursed to the contractor.

I Fire Detection system


The Fire detection system consists of:

1. Automatic Fire Detection and alarm system.


2. Public Address System.
3. Manual Call Points at exit points.

II Fire fighting system

The Fire Fighting system comprises of:

1. Wet Riser System.

2. Sprinkle System.

3. Portable Fire Extinguishers.

A Schematic is also available for scrutiny. However, minor modifications / alternative


solutions may be adopted at the time of execution, if permissible, within the framework
of NBC and other relevant codes of practice.

2.0 SYSTEM DESCRIPTIONS

2.1 Fire suppression system for the project is based on the concept of TOTAL PROTECTION BY
WET RISER HYDRANT AND SPRINKLER SYSTEM.

2.2 Water shall be drawn from ground storage tank by an electrically operated Main pump
& Diesel pump which shall cater to wet risers. A separate electrically operated sprinkler
pump shall be provided.

2.3 In addition, electrically driven jockey/booster pump is provided in order to take care of
hydraulic losses periodically.

2.4 Each riser shall be with single/double hydrant outlets and hose reel on each floor. The
function of the pumps shall be such as to generate a pressure of 3.5 kg/Sq.cm at the topmost
hydrant outlet of the riser.

2.5 The landing of all floors of the building shall be provided with fire hose cabinets
consisting of one number 63 mm diameter fire hydrant outlet valve, first aid 19mm diameter
hose reel 30 m length, two lengths of 63 mm diameter canvas hoses of 15 m length and
nozzle.

2.6 In addition to the above, hand held fire extinguishers shall be placed in suitable locations.

3.0 TECHNICAL SPECIFICATION FOR FIRE FIGHTING INSTALLATION


WORKS

3.1 FIRE HYDRANT SYSTEM

The fire hydrant system shall include the following:

1.1 Mild steel class C heavy duty fire riser main within the building and outside the
building.

1.2 Landing valves, hose reels, hose cabinets, fire brigade connections and connection
to pumps and appliances.
1.3 Hydrant pumps, jockey pump and its accessories
1.4 All materials shall be of best quality confirming to these specifications and subject to
the approval of the consulting engineer.
1.5 Pipes have to be fixed in a manner as to provide easy accessibility for repair
and maintenance and shall not cause any obstruction in shafts, passages etc
1.6 Pipes and fittings shall be fixed to the walls and ceilings by suitable clamps
at intervals specified. Only approved types of anchors shall be used.
1.7 Pipes and fittings shall be fixed truly vertical, horizontal or in slopes as required
in a neat work man like manner.
1.8 Valves and other appurtenances shall be also located that they are easily accessible
for operation, repair, and maintenance.
1.9 Pipes for wet risers within the building shall be M.S tubes conforming to I.S: 1239
(heavy duty C class) with branded malleable specials, such as tees, elbows, flanges, nipples
etc.
1.10 Fittings for black steel shall be malleable iron or approved type cast iron fittings
with screwed /welded joints.
1.11 Joints for black steel pipes and fittings shall be metal-to-metal threaded joints.
1.12 Interconnection between sprinkler and hydrant pumps shall be carried out at discharge
side with check valve and isolation valves.

3.2 PIPING

Underground piping shall be of Galvanized iron steel pipes - heavy duty pipe as IS: 1239
Part -1 upto 150 mm dia & IS: 3589 above 200 mm dia pipe shall be provided with
welded joints only unless flanges of ASA 150# are warranted. The piping shall be laid
not less than one meter below the ground level, suitable masonry / RCC supports, and
concrete anchor blocks of suitable design shall be provided at every change in direction
of pipeline either horizontal or vertical and near every pipe joints, where soil conditions
are unsatisfactory.
Above ground piping shall be GI steel tubes of heavy grade unless and until specified
confirming to IS: 1239 Part – I. GI steel pipes shall be provided with welded joints only
unless flanges of ASA 150# are warranted. All fittings shall be seam less butt welded
heavy grade wrought or mild steel confirming to A 234 Gr. WPB sch.40 (IS: 1239 Part
II). The flanges shall be of ASA 150# drilled as per relevant Indian standards.
Flanges shall be faced [as per ASA 150 standards] and shall have jointing of rubber
insertion of Neoprene Gasket. In case of Socket and spigot joint pipes, the joint shall be
made by using rubber gaskets as per manufacturer’s specification. The joints shall be
capable of withstanding a pressure of 1.5 times the working pressure / 14-bar, whichever
is more. All the above ground piping shall be supported by angle iron brackets on walls /
suspended by hangers from ceiling or concrete pedestals at some places. Piping above

ground shall be painted with two coats of approved enamel paint over a coat of primer
after the installation and testing.
Pipes shall be kept thoroughly clean during the course of laying. The ends of the pipes shall
be blocked with wooden plugs wedged home, at the end of each day’s work to prevent dirt,
rodents, insects etc entering the pipe.

3.3 EXCAVATION

Excavation for pipe lines shall be in open trenches to line and grade shown on the drawings
or as required at site. Pipelines shall be buried to minimum depth of 1 metre.

The contractor shall support all trenches or adjoining structures with adequate timber
supports wherever required.

On completion of testing and painting of the pipeline, trenches shall be refilled with
excavated earth in 20cms, layers and consolidated.

3.4 THURST BLOCKS

Contractor shall provide suitable burnt brick masonry blocks of suitable dimensions at
regular intervals of 3 metre to support the pipes. Masonry blocks of table molded class I
bricks in CM 1:6 and plastered in Cm 1:3, finished with a neat smooth coat of cement. Size
of blocks shall be 600*600*450mm.

Exact location, design, size and mix of the concrete blocks / steel support shall be as
shown on the drawings or as directed by the Project Manager prior to execution of work.

3.5 VALVES

Butterfly valves shall be provided for pipes 50mm dia and above. The valves shall confirm
to IS13039 and shall be in CI construction. The valves shall be tested to pressure of
16Kg/sq.cm.

3.6 EXTERNAL HYDRANTS

Yard hydrant valves shall be as per IS 5290.the valves should be complete with hand
wheels, quick couplings connections, springs and blank caps. The hydrants shall be laid on
150mm dia main tee off, to 150mm/80mm dia for single headed hydrants at 1.0 mtr from
ground level.

3.7 RUBBER HOSE REEL

Contractor shall provide standard fire hose reel with 19mm dia high pressure rubber hose
of specified length with gunmetal nozzles and control valve shut off valve, all mounted on
a circular hose reel drum of mild steel construction and cast iron bracket. The hose reel
along with 63mm dia landing valve and two numbers 15mtr long 63mm dia hose shall be
installed in fire hose cabinet inside the building.

3.8 HYDRANT VALVE / CP HOSE PIPE

The landing valve (internal) shall be gunmetal single- headed type confirming to IS: 5290,
complete with hand wheel, quick coupling, spring and blank cap.

Heavy-duty hose pipe 63mm dia (2 nos 15 mtr length in internal FHC and 2 nos of 15 mtrs
length in external fire hose cabinet) with 63mm dia. Instantaneous pattern single/double-
headed hydrant valve, branch pipe and nozzle to be provided in fire hose cabinet .The
branch pipe shall be gunmetal and confirm to IS:903.

3.9 FIRE BRIGADE INLET CONNECTIONS

Provide as shown on drawings gunmetal four connecting head with 4*63mm dia
instantaneous type inlets with check valve and 150mm dia outlet connection to the fire
main grid with 150mm dia butterfly valve.

3.10 AIR RELEASE VALVES

Provide 20mm screwed inlet GM single acting air valve on all high points in the system or
as shown on drawings.

3.11 DRAIN VALVES

Provide 50mm dia GI pipe confirming to IS:1239 heavy class with 50mm butterfly valve
for draining any water in the system in low pockets.

3.12 HYDRANT VALVE CHAMBERS

Contractor shall provide suitable brick masonry chambers in cement mortar 1:5 (1 cement:
5 coarse sand) on cement concrete foundations 159mm thick 1:5:10 mix (1 cement: 5 fine
sand :10 graded stone aggregate 40mm nominal size )15mm thick cement plaster inside
and outside finished with a floating coat of neat cement inside with cast iron surface box
approved by local fire brigade including excavation, back filling complete.

Valve chambers shall be of following sizes

For depths up to 1 mtr 750mm*750mm

For depths beyond 1 mtr 1000mm*1000mm

3.13 PIPE PROTECTION

All pipes above ground and in exposed locations shall be painted with one coat of red oxide
primer and two or more coats of PO Red synthetic enamel paint. The below pipes shall be
coated, protected using polymer based material.

GI ‘C’ class laid outdoor in trenches / buried in earth shall be wrapped with pipe coat
membrane consisting of seven layers of polyethylene polymerized bitumen and polyester
mat of 4mm wide tape laid over a suitable primer of fibre and solvent based rubber
modified bituminous primer of density 0.9 gms/cum applied at the rate of approx 200 -250
gms/sq.m. Materials laid to be strictly as per manufacturer's specification and laid under
technical assistance of manufacturer's representative.
Wrapping coating shall be tested for any damages by means of HOLIDAY TEST
Pipes passing through masonry walls, foundation, beams shall be taken through embedded
pipe sleeve of same material. The pipe sleeve size to be at least 1.5 times the diameter of
the crossing pipeline. The pipeline running below floor shall be given anti-corrosive
treatment same as for underground piping.

3.14 TESTING

The contractor shall arrange to test the entire system as per the procedure enumerated under
particular specifications, after the erection is completed. The tests shall be carried out to
the satisfaction of consultant / Architects / Owners. The results of the tests shall be
submitted to the Owner in triplicate. If the results of the tests are not found to be
satisfactory by the consultant / Architects / Engineer in charge, necessary rectifications
shall be done until the test results are found to be satisfactory. The installation shall be
deemed to be completed only after the successful completion of the tests. The system has to
be tested in accordance with NFPA – 25 – 2002 in all respects.
After laying and jointing, the piping shall be pressure tested by hydrostatic method. The
piping shall be slowly filled with water in order to expel all the air. The piping shall then
be allowed to stand full of water for 24 hours. Any leakages at flanges or elsewhere shall
be rectified. The pressure shall then be applied by means of a test pump (either hand
operated). The test pressure shall not be less than 1.5 times the working pressure of the
system. However, the test pressure shall not exceed 12.5 bars in any case.
Pressure gauges used for the test shall be accurate and shall preferably have been re-
calibrated before the test. The open ends of the piping shall be plugged during the test.
Capacity of pumps shall be checked with respect to the contractor's piping and equipment

layout. Tests shall be conducted to determine the delivery head, flow and bhp of pumps
after installation. All the test results shall correspond to the performance curves. All the
leaks and defects in joints revealed during the testing shall be rectified to the satisfaction of
the Owner.
The system shall also be tested for its desired performance and function by opening hydrant
valves on each floor separately and five landing valves simultaneously. The flow of water
at the top most hydrants shall be checked when four landing valves below are open. The
cutting in and cutting out pressure setting of starting device shall also be checked for its
correct operation.
The test results shall be recorded and countersigned by PMC / Consultant / Architect /
Owner's representatives and submitted in triplicate for approval by the Owner.

3.15 PUMPS AND ACCESSORIES

All pumps to be factory tested. Certificates are mandatory to be submitted by the vendor.
Pumping Sets:
a) Pumping sets shall be single or multistage horizontal centrifugal pumps with cast iron
body and dynamically balanced bronze impeller connecting shaft shall be stainless
steel.
b) Pumps shall be connected to the drive by means of a flexible coupling.
c) Pumps shall be provided with approved type of mechanical seals pressure gauge with
isolation cock on the delivery side.
d) Pumps selected should work under 150% rated flow delivered against 65% of the rated
head so as to meet local statutory requirements / Client's requirements.
The pumps shall be exclusively used for firefighting purpose and shall be approved by the
local fire authority. One main set of electrical motor driven direct coupled centrifugal pump of
adequate discharge and one additional standby Diesel driven direct coupled centrifugal pump
of same discharge and head shall be provided.

I) Diesel engine coupled Fire pump shall be centrifugal pump of capacity 2280 LPM
against 8 bar. The pump shall be automatic in operation. The construction details of the
pumps shall be as follows: -

a) Pump : Horizontal End Suction type.

b) Casing : Cast iron.
c) Impeller : Single inlet enclosed type – CI.
d) Shaft : Stainless Steel.
e) Bearings : Heavy duty ball bearings.
f) Flanges : Faced and drilled as per BSS-10 table or IS.
g) Drive : Direct drive with flexible coupling.
h) Gland : Horizontal split for each insert and removal.
i) Starting : Automatic starting device with arrangement
pressure switch etc., and suitable hotter.
j) Installation : Pump and Engine shall be mounted on a common
base plate and installed on a suitable concrete
foundation and carrying the same. Suitable
anti-vibration springs shall also be installed to
minimize the vibration. The pump set shall, however
be factory aligned. The bed plate levels shall be
properly fixed at site before the foundation bolts
are grouted.
k) Pump Accessories: Pump set shall be provided with the following
accessories
i) Coupling guard.
ii) Air vent for pump casing.
iii) Suction and delivery pressure gauges.

iv) Base plate, foundation bolts, nuts, washers.

II) Main Fire pump shall be electrically driven centrifugally pump of capacity 2280LPM
against 8 bar. The pump shall be automatic in operation and driven by a totally enclosed
fan cooled Induction electric motor of required HP & RPM. The construction details of the
pumps shall be as follows: -
l) Pump : Horizontal End Suction type.
m) Casing : Cast iron.
n) Impeller : Single inlet enclosed type – CI.
o) Shaft : Stainless Steel.

p) Bearings : Heavy duty ball bearings.
q) Flanges : Faced and drilled as per BSS-10 table or IS.
r) Drive : Direct drive with flexible coupling.
s) Gland : Horizontal split for each insert and removal.
t) Motor : Total enclosed fan cooled squirrel cage induction
motor suitable for operation of 430 Volts, 3 Phase,
50 HZ A.C. supply.
u) Starting : Automatic starting device with necessary
Contactor, pressure switch etc., and suitable starter.
v) Installation : Pump and motor set shall be mounted on a common
base plate and installed on a suitable concrete
foundation and carrying the same. Suitable
anti-vibration springs shall also be installed minimize
the vibration. The pump set shall, however be factory
aligned. The bed plate levels shall be properly fixed
at site before the foundation bolts are grouted.
w) Pump Accessories : Pump set shall be provided with the following
accessories
v) Coupling guard.
vi) Air vent for pump casing.
vii) Suction and delivery pressure gauges.

viii) Base plate, foundation bolts, nuts, washers.


III) Jockey Pump shall be electrically driven centrifugal pump of required capacity 180
LPM at 8 bar. The pump shall be automatic in operation and driven by dip proof squirrel
cage electric motor of required HP & RPM.

3.16 MOTOR STARTING CONTROL PANEL

The electrical control panel shall be sheet steel enclosed dead front type easy access to all
parts and cable terminations. The panel drawing shall be got approved before fabrication.

Panels shall be fabricated out of 14 SWG( 1.6mm) thick steel sheets duly rust inhibited
through a process of degreasing and phosphating. The panel shall be complete with ON, OFF,
push buttons, ammeter and voltmeter with selector switch and indicating lamps.

The motor starter shall be automatic star delta type. This shall be complete with timers and
auxiliary relays are required. Fire pump starting shall be annunciated through an electric
hooter. The control system shall integrate the main pump operation through pressure switches.

The pressure switch contacts will start the main pump on loss of excessive pressure in the
system as per the specified setting. An auto/manual selector switch will be provided to start
and stop the pump manually also, by push buttons. A separate motor starter shall be provided
for the jockey pump. However this shall be operated through ON-OFF push buttons.

All cabling to and from the pumps to starters and control switches shall be carried out through
armored PVC cables of approved make. Cables shall be laid in accordance with section M.V
cabling. The pump motors and panels shall be double earthed as per IS3043

3.17 SPRINKLER SYSTEM

Generally the sprinkler system shall be provided in ground floor and all floors above. The
sprinkler heads are to be fixed into GI pipes of sizes 25mm to 150mm to suit the hydraulics of
the system and conforming to the guidelines. The entire piping system shall be capable of
withstanding test pressure of 15Kg/sqcm. All piping shall be done by means of welded,
screwed and flanged joints. For sprinkler system piping attached to structural members of the
building suitable type of hangers of steel bars, angles, or threaded steel pipe painted with zinc
chromate and synthetic enamel paint as per NFPA 13 shall strictly be provided. Due care shall
be taken that sprinkler heads are not applied with paint at the time of painting the pies and
fittings.

A test pipe of 25mm in dia with a drain valve shall be provided to test alarm devices.

3.18 PIPE SUPPORTS

The pipe supports shall be of hi-tech make or equivalent and intervals of supports shall be as
follows:

Pipe size

20mm to 32mm - 2.5mtrs

40mm to 65mm - 3.5mtrs

75mm to 100mm - 3.6mtrs

100mm to 150mm - 4.3mtrs

200mm to 300mm - 5.0mtrs

i) QUARTZOID AUTOMATIC SPRINKLER

Sprinkler heads shall be of fixed temperature type with a quartzoid bulb containing liquid
having high vapour pressure held in position by forged gun metal yoke and a deflector. They
should be strong to withstand any pressure surge or water hammer effects likely to occur in
the system. The rated temperature of quartzoid bulb shall be 68 degree C. Sprinkler heads
shall be provided at approximate spacing to cover 6.96sqm per sprinkler. The bulb shall
contain a liquid having a freezing point below any natural climatic figures and a high
coefficient of expansion. The temperature rating shall be stamped on the deflector. The colour
of the liquid filled in the bulb shall be according to the temperature rating as per international
standard. The inlet shall be screwed type. The sprinklers shall 15mm orifice for extra light
hazard. The flow requirement shall be 80 lpm at 2 bar pressure.

ii) ORIFICE PLATES

For restricting pressure at lower levels in the sprinkler system, orifice plates of appropriate
size shall be fitted at different floor levels, at the branching points from riser main. The
diameter of such orifice shall not be less than 50mm dia. These orifice plates must be of steel
with plain central hole and the thickness shall be 6mm. such orifice plates must have a
projecting identification tag.

iii) INSTALLATION CONTROL VALVES

Installation valve shall comprise of a cast iron sluice valve with gunmetal trim, pressure
gauge, double seated clapper check valves as alarm valve with pressure gauge, bye pass on
check valve to regulate differential pressure and false alarms, turbine water gong including all
accessories as supplied by original equipment manufacturer and all necessary and required
items for full and satisfactory performance of the system.

iv) WATER FLOW INDICATOR

These shall be paddle or vane type, consisting of moveable flexible vane of thin metal or
plastic which is inserted through a circular opening cut in the wall of sprinkler supply pipe.
The vane shall extend into water way sufficiently to be deflected by movement of water
flowing to the open sprinklers. Motion of the vane shall operate an alarm actuating electric
switch or mechanically trip a signaling system transmitter.

v) PIPES FOR DRAINAGE

Sprinkler pipes shall be so installed that the system can be thoroughly drained. In case of
basement & other areas where sprinkler pipe work is below the installation drain valve
and in other trapped points in the system auxiliary valves of the following sizes shall be
provided.

-20mm valves for pipes upto 65mm dia

-32mm valves for pipes larger than 65mm dia

3.19 PORTABLE FIRE EXTINGUISHERS

i) SCOPE
Work under this section shall consist of furnishing all labour, materials, appliances and
equipment necessary and required to install fire extinguishing hand appliances as per
relevant specification of various authorities.
Without restricting to the generality of the foregoing, the work shall consist of the
following:
Installation of fully charged and tested fire extinguishing hand appliances of A B C powder
type as required and specified in the drawings and schedule of quantities.

ii) MEASUREMENT
Fire extinguishers shall be counted in numbers and include installation of all necessary
items required as given in the specifications.
iii) ABC TYPE DRY POWDER EXTINGUISHER
The Extinguisher shall be filled with ABC grade 40, Mono Ammonium Phosphate 40%
from any approved manufacturer.
The capacity of the extinguisher when filled with Dry Chemical Powder (First filling) as
per IS 4308, Part II, shall be 5 Kg +/-2% or 10 Kg +/- 3%.
The distribution of fire extinguishers to be as per IS 2190 - 1992

It shall be operated upright, with a squeeze grip valve to control discharge. The plunger
neck shall have a safety clip, fitted with a pin, to prevent accidental discharge. It shall be
pressurized with Dry Nitrogen, as expellant. The Nitrogen to be charged at a pressure of 15
Kg/cm2
Body shall be of mild steel conforming to relevant IS Standards. The neck ring shall be
also mild steel and welded to the body. The discharge valve body shall be forged brass or
leaded bronze, while the spindle, spring and siphon tube shall be of brass. The nozzle shall
be of brass, while the hose shall be braided nylon. The body shall be cylindrical in shape,
with the dish and dome welded to it. Sufficient space for Nitrogen gas shall be provided
inside the body, above the powder filling.
The Neck Ring shall be externally threaded - the threading portion being 1.6 cm. The filler
opening in the neck ring shall not less than 50 mm. Discharge nozzle shall be screwed to
the hose. The design of the nozzle shall meet the performance requirement, so as to
discharge at least 85% of contents upto a throw of 4 m, continuously, at least for 15
seconds. The hose, forming part of discharge nozzle, shall be 500 mm long, with 10 mm
dia internally for 5 Kg capacity and 12 mm for 10 Kg capacity. It shall have a pressure
gauge fitted to the valve assembly or the cylinder to indicate pressure available inside. The
extinguisher shall be treated with anti-corrosive paint, and it shall be labeled with words
ABC 2.5 cm long, within a triangle of 5 cm on each face. The extinguisher body and valve
assembly shall withstand internal pressure of 30 Kg/cm2 for a minimum period of 2
minutes. The pressure gauge shall be imported and suited for the purpose.

iv) WATER TYPE EXTINGUISHER


The Extinguishing medium shall be primarily water stored under normal pressure, the
discharge being affected by release of Carbon Dioxide Gas from a 120 gm cylinder.
The capacity of Extinguisher, when filled upto the indicated level, shall be 9 ltr +/- 5%
The skin thickness of the Cylinder shall be minimum 4.0 mm, fabricated from Mild Steel
sheet, welded as required, with dish and dome, being of same thickness, and of size not
exceeding the diameter of body. The diameter of body is not less than 150 mm and not
exceeding 200 mm. The neck shall be externally threaded upto a minimum depth of 16
mm, and leaded tin bronze.
The cap shall be of leaded tin bronze, and screwed on the body upto a minimum of 1.6 cm
depth, with parallel screw thread to match the neck ring. The siphon tube is of brass or
G.I.and the strainer to be of Brass. The cartridge holder, knob, discharge fittings and
plunger to be of Brass / Leaded tin bronze, and plunger of stainless steel, spring of stainless
steel. The cap to have handle, fixed to it. The discharge hose shall be braided nylon, of 10
mm diameter and 600 mm long, with a nozzle of brass fitted at end.
The extinguisher shall be treated for anti-corrosion internally and externally, and externally
painted with Fire Red paint. The paint shall be stove enamelled / powder coated. The
cartridge shall be as per IS, and have 60 gm net carbon dioxide gas for expelling. The
extinguisher, body and cap shall be treated to an internal hydraulic pressure of 25 Kg/cm2.

It shall have external marking with letter A, of 2.5 cm height, in block letters within a
triangle of 5 cm each side. The extinguisher shall be upright in operation, with the body
placed on ground and discharge tube with nozzle held in one hand to give a throw of not
less than 6 metres, and continue so for at-least 60 sec. The extinguisher body shall be
clearly marked with ISI stamp (IS 940).

v) CARBON DIOXIDE EXTINGUISHER


The Carbon Dioxide Extinguisher shall be as per IS: 2878
The body shall be constructed of seamless tube conforming to IS: 7285 and having a
convex dome and flat base. Its diameter shall be maximum 140 mm, and the overall height
shall not exceed 720 mm.
The discharge mechanism shall be through a control valve conforming to IS: 3224. The
internal siphon tube shall be of copper aluminium conforming to relevant specifications.
Hose Pipe shall be high pressure braided Rubber hose with a minimum burst pressure of
140 Kg/cm2 and shall be approximately 1.0 meter in length having internal diameter of 10
mm. The discharge horn shall be of high quality unbreakable plastic with gradually
expanding shape, to convert liquid carbon dioxide into gas form. The hand grip of
Discharge horn shall be insulated with Rubber of appropriate thickness.
The gas shall be conforming to IS: 307 and shall be stored at about 85 Kg/cm2. The
expansion ratio between stored liquid carbon dioxide to expanded gas shall be 1:9 times
and the total discharge time (effective) shall be minimum 10 sec and maximum 25 sec.
The extinguisher shall fulfil the following test pressures:
Cylinder: 236 Kg/cm2
Control Valve: 125 Kg/cm2
Burst Pressure of Hose: 140 Kg/cm2 minimum
It shall be an Upright type. The cylinder, including the control valve and high pressure
Discharge Hose must comply with relevant Statutory Regulations, and also bear IS
marking.

4.0 SPECIFICATION FOR AUTOMATIC FIRE DETECTION AND FIRE ALARM


SYSTEM

The work under this section shall consist of supply of all materials, equipments and labor
required to install Automatic addressable fire detection and alarm system, complete with main
control panels. Anunciatiors, Electronic hooters, Manual call stations, visual alarm indicators
etc,. it shall also include laying of cables in ducts, conduits etc. the control panel and the fire
alarm shall conform to IS 2189 in respect of design and installation. The system shall be

suitable to operate on 250V AC or 24V DC. The design shall be modular so that additional
zones can cater for large installation and to provide facility for future expansions up to 25%
more of present capacity.

The system shall be fully supervised for all fault conditions with distinctive alarms operated
for FAULT and FIRE conditions. The fire or fault lamp shall continue to glow until the fault
conditions has been corrected or the fire extinguished. Test push buttons shall be provided on
the main control panel to test electronic circuits in each zone.

Dual lamp shall be provided to indicate Fire condition and to ensure against lamp failure. A
common electronic audible alarm shall be provided but the fire signal shall be different from
the fault signal by providing different tones for fire and fault conditions. The system shall be
supervised for the following conditions:

a. Normal conditions

b. OPEN circuit in system wiring.

c. SHORT circuit in system wiring.

d. FIRE conditions

e. AC mains failure

f. Battery LOW conditions

4.1 FIRE ALARM PANEL

Main fire alarm control panel shall have adequate number of loops suitable for the subject
building. The control panel shall conform IS- 2189. The panel shall be totally enclosed dust
and vermin proof type made f 16 SWG sheet steel with powdered coated finish. The panel
shall be completely of solid state design. The basic function of the control panel shall be to
respond automatically to the operation of any manual call stations or smoke / heat detector
and to give a fire alarm and to indicate the area where the device has activated. The other
function of the control panel shall be to indicate the faults within the system. A fault warning
shall be given by an audible and visual signal in the control panel. There shall be two
indicators, one for fire and one for fault in the control panel corresponding to each zone.

4.2 MANUAL CALL POINTS

They shall be of break glass type completely encased in sheet steel housing, with provision for
cable of conduit entry. The words ‘IN CASE OF FIRE BREAK GLASS’ shall be inscribed in
clear bold letters on the font. It shall be provided with a push button of 30V 3Amp rating with
2 sets of NO & NC contacts. The call points shall be wall mounting type and shall be
provided with a chain and hammer attached to it. Installation of manual call points shall be as
per IS 2189.

4.3 ELECTRONIC HOOTERS

The Dual Tone hooters shall be of electronic type and shall give continuous /intermittent
audible alarm automatically whenever a detection device is activated. They shall be complete
with electronic circuitary, speakers and of wall mounting type. Installation of Electronic
Hooters shall be as per IS-2189.

4.4 SMOKE DETECTOR

The general requirements, performance- test and criteria for conformity for ionization type
smoke detector for use in automatic fire alarm system shall be as per IS-11360-1985. A visual
indication of detectors alarm condition shall be provided which shall be visible from distance
and visually different from other conditions.

The detector shall be addressable type, The sensitivity of the detectors shall not vary with
change in ambient temperature, humidity pressure or voltage variation. All detectors shall be
identical in construction, design and characteristics to facilitate easy replacement. The
detector housing shall be damage resistant made of polycarbonate with plug in housing base
of universal type suitable for surface mounting. It shall have in built safety device to monitor
the removal and pilferage protected. The detector shall have remote alarm indication facility.
The installation and spacing of these detectors shall be as per IS 2189.

4.5 HEAT DETECTORS

Heat detectors shall be of electro pneumatic type, working on both rate of rise and fixed
temperature principal. The rate of rise element shall be carefully caliberated to ignore any
normal fluctuation in temperature, but to respond quickly when the temperature rise is 9
degrees or more per minute. The fixed temperature feature should be entirely independent of
the rate of rise element. The operating temperature of fixed temperature element is factory set

to respond when room temperature reaches the limit. The detector shall be suitable for two
wire system, low DC voltage operation and with indicator facility. It shall be possible to loop
heat detectors with smoke detectors and manual call points in the same circuit. The
installation and spacing of these detectors shall be as per IS 2189.

4.6 RESPONSE INDICATORS

RED coloured LED mounted on MS housing inscribed fire shall be provided for all detectors
installed out of direct line of sight. The response indicators shall also be installed out of direct
line of sight. The response indicators LED will repeat the normal or alarm conditions of its
respective detectors.

4.7 CONDUITS

These shall be 16SWG mild steel, threaded circular tubing or Rigid PVC tubes of 20 or 25mm
diameter.

4.8 CABLES

The wiring shall be done using 1100v grade PVC insulated copper conductor sizes of
1.5sqmm cross section when laid in side conduits. Otherwise they shall be 2 core 1.5sqmm
PVC insulated copper conductor armoured PVC sheathed control cable.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS OF CONTRACT FOR SUPPLY AND ERECTION

1. Supply of clients materials for erection.

The owner will arrange to purchase major equipments and other materials as per
mutually agreed schedule of quantities and items. These will be stored at the site
and will remain in the custody of the owner. Materials will be issued to the

contractor based on requisition form duly signed by contractor’s authorized
representative. The balance materials after erection of equipment if any shall be
daily returned to the owner’s store and accounted for in their books.

2. Period of final measurement

The final measurement shall be taken within 15 days from/after completion of the
work and satisfactory testing and commissioning.

3. The above conditions are supplementary to the general conditions of contract.
