1. Tema: English in Indonesia and Industry 4.0 by Dr. Allan Frank

Lauder, M.A (University of Indonesia)
2. Introduction: English is a global language. English was originally a
language spoken by a few million Anglo-Saxons and now English came to be
spoken in many countries. One important model of these various Englishes
distinguishes three types there are innercircle countries, outer circle countries
and expanding circle countries.
3. Method: Presentation
4. Discussion:
This presentation looks at the status and use of English in Indonesia, the
“Digital Age” and the emerging phenomenon known as “Industry 4.0” and
how it is disrupting society, responding and preparing for industry 4.0, the
role of English as part of way forward for building anadvanced economy in
Indonesia by 2045.
Current state of the art in language teaching has 3 dimensions
- A cognitive science/psycholinguistic dimension
- A social-interactionist dimension
- A technology-assisted learning dimension

There are three main points of teaching the new literacies in education. First,
data literacy. Second, technological literacy. Third, human literacy. Data
literacy and technological literacy can be taught in the study programs.
English in Indonesia exists in a multilingual and multicultural setting that is
unique and which differs from neighbouring countries. Key components for
building quality education of English: school management, class and teacher
workload, teacher qualification, teaching method, teaching materials,
evaluation. English is optional in primary school but compulsory in junior and
senior high school. It would be 5% of the 3 millions total of all teachers, that
would be about 150.000 teachers of English.

Learning English. Learning a foreign is quite different to the acquisition of

one’s first language. There are only two ways to learn a foreign or second
language to take classes or to try and learn independently. The success of
either of these depends on different things which may change in important
over time.

The history of English education in Indonesia. In the 1920s and 1930s,

English as a foreign language was taught but only in a few schools for the
children of the elites. After independence, a new education system had to be
created from scratch and English was chosen to be the first foreign language.
Education in different periods. Education system envlove to meet the needs of
the technologies of each era. A largely agricultural workforce needed basic
reading, writing, both literacy and numeracy. This led to universal basic
education, the attention to literacy but it also used pedagogical methods that
prioritized rote learning and obedience to authority.

Indonesian English. There is no uniquenly identifiable Indonesian English.

There are learner-speakers whose accents derives from their first language
being one of the regional languages.

Cultural and social aspects of English in Indonesia. About 20 years ago, the
use of English in Indonesia was met by some commentators as a kind of threat
to the national language and identity. Indonesia is not only an adopter of
foreign culture, it is an adaptor, taking foreign culture selectively then
adapting it to local culture. Examples are birthday celebration and many
coffee shops or restaurants.
