Graphic organizers guide learners’ thinking as they fill in and build upon a visual map or diagram.
Graphic organizers are some of the most effective visual learning strategies for students and are
applied across the curriculum to enhance learning and understanding of subject matter content.
In a variety of formats dependent upon the task, graphic organizers facilitate students’ learning
by helping them identify areas of focus within a broad topic, such as a novel or article.
Because they help the learner make connections and structure thinking, students often turn to
graphic organizers for writing projects.
1
How to use graphic organizers
• Graphic organizers are tools that can be used to visualize and organize information.
Because graphic organizers are often used as prompts for students to fill in the blanks,
graphic organizers provide many benefits to students who use them including:
Making it clear how to break apart a story into the main elements (intro, rising action,
climax, etc.)

relationship between new and existing concepts, thereby facilitating integration of new
and familiar ideas. Conceptual girds, Venn diagrams, Flowcharts, mind maps, and concept
maps are some of the more common graphic organizers used to introduce science
concepts and assess student learning.
Graphic organizers are valuable for instruction, study and assessment. When teachers
introduce material using graphic organizers, they present information in a logical manner
to facilitate encoding in to short and long-term memory.
In addition, they present a model of meaning full learning in which new concepts are
integrated with familiar ones.
Students can learn from such modeling and review and study subject matter by
developing their own graphic organizers that show the relationship between relevant
concepts using categories, position and propositions (connections between two or more
concepts).
Teachers can assess student understanding by evaluating student-generated graphic
organizers. Although much more difficult to assess than objective rote-based questions,
graphic organizers provide a valuable window to view student understanding and
misconceptions.
