MODIFICATION
Experience has shown that, on the left haw1 drive Bent ley 1 R 1 Type
fitted with an Automatic Gearbox, the flexible pipe from the ride
control pump to the four-way union mounted on the frame cruciform
member just behind the gearbox, can be burnt by fouling the exhaust
pipe. In exceptional cases this may lead to considerable loss of oil
from the gearbox, which, although causing no permanent damage, will give
rise to immediate erratic and noisy operation. A shorter pipe, Part No.
RF.9971, has been fitted on production on chassis No. B-20-UN and from
B-26-UN onwards.
Retailers should check all left-hand drive 1 R1 Type Bentleys,
fitted with an Automatic Gearbox, in their area at the earliest
opportunity on service and if necessary, reposition the flexible pipe
as described below.

A strengthened thrust washer for the 3rd speed gear on the third
motion shaft, .050" (1.25 ~m) thicker than the earlier types, is now avail-
able for replacement purpose. The washer has an overall thickness of .225•
(5.72 ~m) and should be fitted whenever a gearbox is stri~ed dawn fgr ~
reason. The groove in the third motion shaft must be chamfered to accomodate
the new washer and full details are set out in this Bulletin.
On current production a washer of .275" (6.98 ~m) thickness is now
being fitted. Its fitting requires machining operations to existing parts
which it is not intended should be undertaken on a service basis. However,
full details are included in the second part of this Bulletin for information
and for guidance where sufficient new parts are being fitted to warrant
fitting the production type washer.

FOR INFORM3?ION:
( "REVTSEDSTEERIIE GEOIETRY".)
1. DESCRTPTION:
The egual wear li.nkage between the two shoes also di.ffers florn
the previous arrangement. The shorter of the tro links is now eliminated,
one arm of the balance lever beiqg attached directly to the web of the
trai.lirg shoe, while a lorg link connects the other arm to tle neb of the
laadi.rg shoe. (See Pig.1). the bal.ance fever, instead. of having a f\rlcrr:m
ccarsistj.ng of a pin attached to the carrier plate, is pivoted onthe end
of a short push rod which butts against the cylinder body. The pu11-off
sprir€ j.s also attached, to the cylinder body, so that the whole assembly
of shoes ancl inter-shoe linkage is nounted off the cylirder, and nill
slid.e bodily if the three Etuds attaclr:irg the cylinder tc the carrier
plate are loosened. the bed.d.irg of the tro shoes can thus be equalised
rithoqt any attjustment of the inter-shoe linkage bei-ng necessary, as nas
the case on the pre\rious brake. lhe lorg link of the inter-shoe linkage
is stil1 adjr:stab1e, but this merely provides for an initial "sizirg[
crperation to set the brake to the correct dianoeter over the linings to
sqit the drltro. (See settirg instructions.) fUe ehoes have rather narrffir
rebs than forrer\r, to provide I certain degree of flexibility. The
sare acljustar unit is used exactly as bfore.
