Introduction

“Youth is the Future of thy Nation.” – Jose P. Rizal. It has always been

the mantra of the Philippine National Hero, Jose P. Rizal that awakens the

potential of the Youth to lead a community in becoming a better and

improvised society of today and the Future’s sake. The Philippines acknowledge

the voices of the Youth to lead thy community: Barangay or even the Nation in

whole – as why the Sangguniang Kabataan exists.

According to the Sangguniang Kabataan Operations Manual that

Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) Reform Act of 2015 (Republic Act No. 10742)

affirms the role of the Filipino youth in nation-building. SK provides

opportunity to the Filipino youth in participating in local governance. The

Sangguniang Kabataan are the Promoters of a “Prosperous Philippines”,

Implementors of Law and Ordinances, the Leaders of Proactive Youth

Legislators and Morally Sound Citizens. The SK body is consist of SK

Chairperson, SK Kagawad, Appointed SK Secretary and SK Treasurer.

We, the researchers, will conduct an interview to one of the SK Kagawad

of Barangay Tubod regarding the present situation of the SK’s, their

contributions and projects in the Barangay, its effect and the help of the said

organization in their life as a Youth, Professional/Student and as a Filipino.

This study aims to know the present Sangguniang Kabataan, it has been

a widespread confusion regarding the SK’s importance in our country and their

said roles and obligations in the Philippine society. It also aims to achieve
understanding regarding the Youth’s role in our society and how the Youth

deals in the Political world, also, to identify the strategy of leadership the Youth

partakes in order to execute their roles and responsibilities effectively,

responsibly and efficiently – to provide change in our society.

The researchers had conducted an interview with SK Kagawad Angely

Casas of Brgy. Tubod, Iligan City. She is one of the best example of a youth

leader in the community. Ever since her high school years she had joined

different organization in and outside the campus, she is a karate member and

earned various awards through competition in local and regionals. She runned

for an SK Kagawad year 2018 under the banner of green party, she had already

served the Barangay Tubod in a year now and counting. She studied at the

MSU-IIT and in the 4th year, she is the only child in the family and had lived

with her grandparents. In her service in the Barangay she had already passed

on such resolutions for the youth in Barangay Tubod and had conducted and

chaired various events in the said barangay – alongside with her co-SK’s. She

then testified that Sangguniang Kabataan helps the youth to become an

effective individual and contributor for the improvement of the community, she

is also hoping that a lot of youth may open their hearts in engaging in any

activities or do service. As of the moment she is the Chairperson on Gender

Sensitivity in SK-Tubod.
