What is Eco-Sep?

The Eco-friendly Septic Tank System or Eco-sep is a technology consisting of a septic water management
system that addresses the problem on untreated wastewaters in resorts, public establishments, and
households.

An Eco-Friendly Septic System (Eco-Sep) is a self-sustaining and portable/movable wastewater

treatment system that uses an innovative combination of bio-stimulation and filtration.

Eco-Sep is funded by the Department of Science and Technology – Philippine Council for Energy
and Emerging Technology Research and Development (DOST-PCIEERD), aims to install
sustainable and eco-friendly septic water management system. Eco-Sep will address the
problem on untreated wastewaters in resorts, public establishments and households.
In Siargao, the Eco-friendly Septic Tank Systems that are currently installed in the three pilot
sites—General Luna Market, General Luna High School and Traveler’s Beach Resort—under a
research project involving the Eco-sep Technology. These sites will serve as a baseline for
DOST to convince resort owners, LGUs and households to adopt the technology
Merlinda Palencia, inventor of Eco-sep technology, explained that the system deployed in the
pilot sites contain the Vigormin – an organomineral that hastens the decomposition of harmful
bacteria present in septic tanks – thereby preventing seepage and contamination of sewage
systems.
According to Project Leader Dr. Merlinda Palencia of AdU's Chemical Engineering Department,
it is a low-cost and deployable method for immediate installation of domestic wastewater clean-
up in disaster-affected areas anywhere in the country. Being enhanced with organominerals
makes the Eco-Sep appropriate in a disaster stricken areas.

According to the hotel owner’s the Eco-Sep is with vigormin they can use the waterwaste is can
be used to water plants and or to clean some items for example cars, bathroom and more.
DOST and the DENR help to fully implement the use of ECO-SEP VIOP to help the government
of siargao in sustainable tourism.
The Eco-Sep’s Vigormin Organo Mineral (ViOM) is an odorless, white powder composed of
various organo-minerals that has the capability to neutralize the poignant odor and the mucky
color in wastewaters or septic water. Its application significantly improves water quality based
on the effluents standards set by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources
(DENR).
