About Jodhpur
Jodhpur is the second biggest city in Rajasthan. It is about 335 km west of Jaipur, the capital
city. Since it lies on the geographic centre of the state, it has emerged as an important tourist
transit base.

This city is often referred to as the ‘Gateway to Thar’ because it is located right on the border of
the Thar Desert. It is also popularly called the ‘Sun City’ because it experiences bright and
sunny days throughout the year. Another name for this city is ‘Blue City’ because the houses
around the Mehrangarh Fort are all painted blue.

History of Jodhpur
The history of this place dates back to the time when the Rathores were forced by the Afghans
to leave Kaunaj, which was their original homeland. They settled in Pali, which is located close
to present day Jodhpur.

Rathore Siahaji tied the knot with the sister of a local prince, which added to the power and
strength of the Rathore Clan. After some time, they succeeded in driving the Pratiharas out of
Mandore, which is located at a distance of about 9 km from present day Jodhpur, and made it
their capital city.

However, after some time, they felt that they required a secure capital. As a result, Jodhpur was
formed by Rao Jodha, the chief of the Rathore clan, in 1459, to serve as a capital city and the
city was also named in his honour. Earlier this place was known as Marwar.

The Rathores shared healthy relations with all the Mughal kings, except Aurangzeb. After
Aurangzeb's death, the Mughals were driven out from Ajmer by Maharaja Ajit Singh and it was
made a part of Marwar (present day Jodhpur). Jodhpur started developing into a modern city
under the rule of Maharaja Umed Singh. It further prospered under the British rule.

People & Culture of Jodhpur

The city of Jodhpur has lent its name to a type of trousers. Jodhpurs, as they are called, are
loose around the thigh and tight at the calf and are mainly designed for horseback riding and
playing polo. Invented in 1887 for use by Sir Pratap Singh, it caught the fancy of the British
aristocracy and soon became popular.
The forts, palaces and havelis of the city are complemented by the various vibrant fairs and
festivals that draw a large number of people. Some of the popular events of Jodhpur are
Marwar Festival, Jodhpur International Desert Kite Festival, Nagaur Fair etc.

Things to do in Jodhpur
The ‘Blue City’, as Jodhpur is known, is famous for its palaces, havelis, forts and museums.
Some of the places to visit in Jodhpur include Mehrangarh Fort, Jaswant Thada, Umaid
Bhawan Palace, Rai ka Baag Palace, Balsammand Lake and Kaylana Lake. Umed Garden
Page 2/13
and Nehru Park also attract a large number of people.

Food & Shopping in Jodhpur

Jodhpur is not only popular because of its palaces, forts and temples, but also because of its
handicrafts, folk dances and folk music. The tie and dye textiles, lacquer ware, embroidered
leather shoes, antiques, puppets, carpets, Rajasthani textiles, miniature camels and elephants,
clay figurines, marble inlay work and classic silver jewellery found in Jodhpur are popular
worldwide. Popular bazaars in Jodhpur include Mochi Bazaar, Sardar Market, Tripolia Bazaar,
the market near the Clock Tower as well as the Station Road.

Also, no trip to Jodhpur is complete without tasting its local delicacies. Snacks like kachoris and
the world renowned dal baati is a must-try. Other local specialities include mirchi bada,
makhania lassi, Jodhpuri maas, gatte ka saag etc.

Travelling to Jodhpur
Jodhpur is well connected to major cities in India by rail, road and air. The airport here is very
close to the city and has regular connections to major cities in the country. From the airport,
auto rickshaws and taxis are available to reach the city centre. Located centrally, the Jodhpur
Railway Station has trains bound to big and small cities like Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Jaipur,
Kolkata, Indore, Bangalore and Hyderabad among other destinations.

To reach Jodhpur from cities within and outside Rajasthan, state-run buses are widely
available. These buses leave from the Roadways Bus Stand. Services are also offered by
private buses which mostly leave from the bus stand on Pal Road and some leave from
Kalpataru Cinema.

Travelling within Jodhpur

Travelling within Jodhpur can be done with the help of tongas, auto rickhsaws and mini buses
with auto rickshaws being the most popular. Most auto rickshaws do not run on metres and the
price needs to be negotiated before boarding. A standard way of negotiating is to quote 60% of
the offered price. Tongas are a leisurely way of moving around and are a good option if there is
no hurry.

The best time to visit Jodhpur is between October and March, during winters.

Featured review about Jodhpur

Lip smacking food with some amazing historical monuments
"Rajasthani food and traditional living is famous throughout the country for its richness and
uniqueness. Though we were on a short trip of just 2 days to Jodhpur we had quite a lot dishes.

Makhaniya lassi-

The creamy sweet curd served at makhaniya lassi at Mirilla sweets. It is super creamy and
super heavy so make sure you have enough space in your food belly.

Janta sweets-

The mava kachori ghevar and pyaz kachori, mirchi badas at janta sweets are lip smacking and
yummilicious. In Fact can try other snacks items too.

Gypsy restaurant-

This place is a must visit while on a trip to Jodhpur. The restaurant is very well known for its
sumptuously delicious thali it offers with around 31 dishes and costing just 300. Got to try it.

Jharokha - a rooftop restaurant in haveli hotel, old Jodhpur, this place offers splendid views of
the lit Mehrangarh fort and the blue city at night. Not heavy on the pocket this restaurant offers
awesome Rajasthani and North Indian cuisine.

Indique restaurant-

Another rooftop restaurant offering view of the market area of Jodhpur. Providing a view of the
fort on one side, gulab Sagar Lake on the other and clocktower on the third, this place is very
famous for its Laal maans and other regional dishes. Slightly on the higher side as far as cost is
concerned, it's worth a visit for the view

Pro tip reach there by evening so that you could see the setting sun and lightings of the
floodlighting are only till 10 at night)

Like all other places of North India, Jodhpur also lived up to the expectations in food. It was a
delight savoring its specialties. Until next time, Jodhpur." - Vipul , Mumbai, Mar 2, 2017
An Amazing city with amazing people and phenomenal lifestyle
"Jodhpur, a city of culture and heritage, is one of the astounding cities in the India.
Known as Bluecity and Suncity, Jodhpur has its own built legacy of historic monuments. This
review has been long overdue but as they say, "Its better late than never"

Page 4/13
It is covered from hills and rocks from all four directions and its main charm is you can have
everything here. From lip smacking food to adventurous tasks, from peaceful stay to wild long
drives, Jodhpur has all.
Now come to the places one must not skip. Mehrangarh Fort, Umaid Palace, Mandore Garden,
Tripoliya Market, Kaylana Lake are some of the main tourists attractions. The Mehrangarh Fort,
with its beauty, is the living proof of the hard work and skill of the Jodhpuri sculptors. Take a
look of Museum in fort and you will love it. It is beautifully laid out. It has a palanquin section
where you can see a wide collection of old royal palanquins. The heritage of the Rathores,
including arms, costumes, paintings, decorated period rooms, etc, is exhibited in the museum.
The museum gives us an idea of the grandeur of the royal families of the past.
One can have beautiful view of BLUE CITY from top of the fort. Jasvant Thada is again a must
visit. It is very nearly situated to the Fort.
Ganesh Mandir, Pal Balaji, Samrat Ashok Garden, Masuria Pahadi, Bhim Bhadak Cave,
Siddhnath Shiv Temple, Ranchordas ji Temple are some fantastic places one must explore in
Jodhpur. Enjoy boating in Kaylana lake and from kaylana go 2 kms above to have a lifetime
experience in Bhim Bhadak Cave. Its a military radar area but visitors entry is allowed from 7 to
7.
Jodhpur is rich in food and its cultural activities. Do not miss shopping from railway road and
Nayi Sadak. You will find some impeccable handicrafts items here and Jooti for which Jodhpur
is world famous.
If you are in Jodhpur and do not try local food your holiday is of no use.
Have Dal Bati, Mirchi Bada, Pyaaj Kachori, Lassi and Shahi samosa. I bet you won't get these
anywhere outside the Jodhpur.
Visit Shastri Circle at night and enjoy musical fountain there. This place is fabulous. You can
have horse riding here. Food is what one can get pretty easily in all its circumference.
Janta Sweets, Poker Sweets, Pali Gulab Halwa, Gypsy Restaurant, 15 A. The, Recipe,
Tamarind are few of the most trusted eating places in Jodhpur.
Jodhpur is well connected from most of the major cities of India. Stay is not a problem here as it
has plenty of luxurious resorts, hotels along with hundreds of budget hotels.
Best time to visit Jodhpur is November to January as rest of the year summer remains at its
peak here." - Nitish Varshney, Delhi, Sep 29, 2016
Awesome city with awesome food
"I have been in Jodhpur for a while. Its a great destination to visit in Rajasthan. The Forts and
Palaces here are incredible. The view of city from fort is amazing. Completely covered with blue
colour. That's why it is called as Blue City. The peoples here are very helpful and sweet wearing
colourful clothes specially ladies. Gents wear colourful turbans also called as safa. Among all
the food is out of the world here.
Here are the famous food destination in jodhpurs.
1. Chatrbhuj Ke Gulab Jamun: A small shop located in inner city serves worlds best gulab
jamun.
2. Manak Chowk Ke Mirchi Bade: Situated in Manak Chowk near famous ghantaghar. Famous
for its spicy onion mirchi bada.
3. Mishri Lal Ki Lassi: Situated at ghantaghar entrance serves amazing lassi.

Page 5/13
4. Ghaas Mandi ki maave ki kachori: A corner shop in area called ghaas mandi serves Maave
ki kachori.

These are the following things which every travellers must taste to complete his/ her journey of
Jodhpur." - Yashdeep Chouhan, Ludhiana, Jan 24, 2016

"It is a beautiful city a lot of wonder forts to visit all around. It is also named Sun city. Not only
forts it had got diverse culture and you find many kinds of food and sweets. There are many
places to visit in jodhpur among them Mehrangarh fort at which you can find flying fox for
adventure on the rope. Umaid bhawan palace, clock tower, ansanh plaza, and many more.
There are many types of cuisines to eat in jodhpur Mave ki Kachori, Besan ki Chaaki, Maakhan
Vade, Makhaniya Lassi, Hot & Spicy Mirchibada. There are many places for shopping in
jodhpur, which can keep your self busy and am sure you will be in a confusion to buy which one

Mehrangarh Fort- Best & a must visit
"The Jodhpur trip was very good, I visited Jodhpur in the month of march, actually in the month
of march too there was too much hot and humid climate but when we reached to the heritage of
Jodhpur i,e Mehrangarh fort by reaching there firstly we have to cross through a queue after
that we entered inside the fort the most interesting fact is that when we go inside the fort the
very first thing is that their were lots of bullets identification which were encircled on the walls.
After that we started seeing museum where there were lots of swords, palkies, dresses of king
and queen, there were various type of palkies, there were also vermilion box and many more
things were there. We all enjoyed a lot, we all take a lots of pictures but there were charges on
camera somewhat 100- 150/-. After visiting there we also know about some facts that some
bollywood movies scenes shooting had been done there like "Hum Saath Saath Hai " and many
more, inside that there were also temple." - Shubham Sawarn, Jaipur, Nov 1, 2015
