PACE Math

We have been working hard at
increasing our knowledge of the
relationship between
multiplication and division.
Students have been solving both
types of problems with partner
and on their own.
Students created their own word
problems and we made a class
Google slides presentation. We
have been emphasizing the
importance of creating models
with problems to demonstrate
true understanding of word
problems.

product, array, commutative
property, dividend, divisor,
quotient, area, square unit
Students just finished working
through 5th grade fraction
standards which focused on
comparing fractions, adding and
subtracting fractions, and solving
word problems involving fractions.
We used the strategies of
greatest common factor and least
common multiple to assist us in
this process.
Next we are further exploring
multi-digit multiplication using
different models. The main goal
is to develop skills in multiplying
whole numbers and decimals.

Students have been working with
ratios and proportions in a variety
of ways and will be exploring
multiple strategies for solving
such problems. We even went
“shopping” to do some price
comparisons to determine the
best values between stores.
We will move into whole number
division. Students will become
fluent with mutli-digit division
using the standard algorithm.

Math Assessments

As our math classes have recently taken their first summative math tests, I wanted to review with you
assessment expectations. As students take quizzes I will grade them and send them home. These are used
as a measure to guide further instruction in the classroom. When tests are given, I will grade them, provide
a cover sheet so you know what skills the test covers, and ask that you sign and return the tests to me. This
is my way of ensuring streamlined communication with you about your child’s progress throughout the year.

Students have been enjoying studying the
extreme ways nature can impact us. Not only did
we read a fascinating book called ​Krakatau
Eruption,​ we also spent time reading first hand
accounts of the situation as well as poetry that
was influenced by similar events.
While reading poetry, we spent several days on
each poem, giving students the opportunity to
read and reread for further understanding. We
explored mood and rhythm as well as main ideas
presented.
We’ve just about finished reading ​The Westing
Game​. Throughout the book we worked on
character development and exploration of the
mystery genre. Students have had lessons on
motive, clues, and red herrings. Students were
given the opportunity to make their own accusations
throughout the novel and soon we will see if anyone
was correct.
During our novel study, we’ve spent time writing
reflections to various questions related to characters
and themes.

Scholarship Opportunity

Scholarship Opportunity:​ The Illinois Association for Gifted Children (IAGC) has an application for a
$1000 scholarship. “This scholarship is given to a student in grade 1 through 8 who has demonstrated
excellence in language arts or math. Financial need is also a consideration.” The deadline is ​Nov. 1​. ​Link
