Introduction

Voltage-multiplier circuits are employed to maintain a relatively low

transformer peak voltage while stepping up the peak output voltage to two, three,
four, or more times the peak rectified voltage.

1. Pre-lab Preparation
The students must answer the questions listed below. The instructor is to
review the answers before beginning the task

1. What is the basic characteristic between a capacitor in AC supply?

2. How does the voltage rating of a capacitor relate to the input voltage?
3. What effect or output when we cascade a capacitor and diode in
parallel to each other?

2. Specific Objectives
1. To observe the characteristics of the clipping of the capacitor during
rectification.
2. To verify the actual and theoretical value of the peak output voltage of
each cascaded segment of capacitor diode configuration.

3. Equipment and Materials

1. Function Generator
2. Oscilloscope
3. Multi-meters
4. 3 silicon diode: 1N4001 (or equivalent)
5. 1 resistor: 6.8 kilo-ohms
6. 3 capacitors: 47 micro farad (25- V rating or better)

4. Procedure
1. Connect the circuit of Figure A, Set the input voltage to 10V, 60Hz.
2. With a dc- coupled oscilloscope, look at the voltage across C1 and record
its value in Table 1 under Vnl.
3. Connect the 6.8 kilo-ohms resistor across C1. Measure and record the dc
voltage across C1(use Vfl of Table 1)
4. Remove the 6.8 kilo-ohms resistor across C1.
5. With the oscilloscope, look at the voltage across C2. Measure and record
the dc voltage across C2 (use Vnl of Table 2.).
6. Connect the 6.8 kilo-ohms resistor across C2. Measure and record the dc
voltage across C2 (use Vfl of Table 2).
7. Remove the 6.8 kilo-ohms resistor.
8. With the oscilloscope, look at the voltage across the tripler output (use Vnl
of Table 3.).
9. Connect the 6.8 kilo-ohms resistor across the tripler output. Measure and
record the dc voltage across the tripler output (Use Vfl of Table 3.).
10. Use the multi-meter to measure the approximate ripple voltage across the
tripler-output and record the value in Table 3.
