1. INTRODUCTION

This document describes the ADT 406 C/S ID ENCODER tool.

The ADT 406 C/S ID ENCODER requires the use of a computer supplied by the customer, with one RS
232 available serial link (or alternatively USB/SERIAL adapter).

2. GENERAL

A. Purpose of the ADT 406 C/S ID ENCODER (STB-06Encoder)

It is used for:

• ELT Cospas-Sarsat Identification management.

It contains everything required for programming an ELT’s distress beacon from the ADT 406 range i.e.
Automatic Fixed, Automatic Portable and Survival models.

B. Improvement from the previous version

The new release version 1.0.5.3. incorporates the evolutions made to the STB-06 test bench software
V1.2.9.3:
• Addition of the compatibility to Windows 8 operating software.
• Transfer of the “Save” sub-directory (ADT 406 C/S ID ENCODER various reports) to the
standard working hard disk of the computer (so no more located under C:\Program Files
(x86)\Elta…..) for a better W7/W8 data management

C. List of ELT model addressed by STB-06Encoder

ELT model ELT Type ELT P/N Rev. (Amendment)

ADT 406 AF/AP Automatic Fixed 01N65900 A to K
ADT 406² AF/AP Automatic Fixed 01N65900 L and above
ADT 406² AF/AP-H Automatic Fixed 01N65901 A and above
+ Automatic Fixed 01N65902 A and above
ADT 406² AF/AP-NAV
ADT 406 AP Automatic Portable 01N65910 A and above
ADT 406 S Survival 01N65920 A and above

Note : ADT 406² AF/AP and ADT 406 AF/AP are strictly identical (minor evolution management
related to internal component obsolescence), fully interchangeable, Fit Form & Function
kept.

D. General characteristics

The P/N of the ADT 406 C/S ID ENCODER is 03N60662. It is composed of :

- One Programming Cable P/N 02N65746 for ELT model ADT 406 (x):,
- One CodADT tool P/N 05N62132 for coding the Activation/Identification module of the model ADT
406 S,
- One Software on CD ROM (recovery),
- This user’s handbook P/N 03E67040.
Note: Software update kit P/N 12N62022 exists and allows update of already in service ADT 406 C/S
ID ENCODER. It contents CDROM, User’s Handbook and labels to follow up the update.

E. CodADT tool

The CodADT tool is mandatory required for coding ADT406 S (Survival) ELT because this model does
not have any connector allowing access to the Identification/Activation module.
Note: This tool may also be used “technically” for Identification / Activation module encoding of the
ADT406 Automatic Fixed or Automatic Portable models without using the ELT transmitter, but
reports will not show accurate ELT model number. It could be used as “Back up” solution for
an emergency purposes.
Remove the “Identification / activation module” from the related Survival ELT and plug it onto CodADT
tool (Figure 1 item 4).
Connect the CodADT connector (Figure 1 item 3) to the computer serial link with the programming
cable P/N 02N65746.
Switch ON and OFF the CodADT toggle switch (Figure 1 item 1) when required by the encoding
software text box “SWITCH ON THE BEACON” or “SWITCH OFF THE BEACON”. Indeed there is no
control on the Activation/Identification module. The activation status is displayed on the green LED
(Figure 1 item 2)

C. Functional operation
The following screen (Ref. Figure 8) is displayed offering the Operator two possibilities. It also
displays the software reference, P/N and Release and the different configurations files release
present on the computer:
• Country code (text file with all the country code available to date),
• Specifications (not used for the Cospas-Sarsat Identification management),
• Code PNADT406 (text file with all the P/N available to date).
Note: these configuration files can be updated by the user. The new files cancel and replace
the existing one. For more flexibility these configuration files are now out of the
operational software release and do not impact it upon evolution.

Figure 8
ADT 406 C/S ID ENCODER Main Menu
The two main functions are:

• Identification: deals with the COSPAS-SARSAT ELT identification (ELT encoding),

• Maintenance: deals with the ELT maintenance tasks (Not relevant for ADT 406 S ELT model).
The configuration files can be updated or exchanged alone without any ADT 406 C/S ID

All the information acquired from the ELT are displayed in Green.

The Beacon model, its P/N with the revision index are automatically displayed on the upper right of
the screen.

“Rate” is the interval between two Cospas-Sarsat Burst. It must indicate 50s for an operational ELT.
Other value are reserved for test purposes.

“Clock” displays the actual value of the ELT internal real time clock. It is not a UTC indication.
This value is not relevant for ELT model ADT 406 S (set to 0).

“Battery used time” indicates the cumulative transmission duration of the transmitter in ON mode
(increased every 15 minutes). This value is not relevant for ELT model ADT 406 S (set to 0).

When the battery used time is over a limit , a warning box appears after an identification Read. It
recommends to perform a battery servicing on the ELT transmitter.

Note: For the ADT 406S the P/N indicated in the “Beacon model” field is the CodADT tool one

Note: Field 4 Aviation contents:

• The A/C registration marking (up to 7 characters). This field is right justified and “Space”
are automatically inserted to the left if less than 7 characters exist.

• Specific ELT Number is a figure between 1 and 4. It encodes the spare bit 82 & 83 as
follow
1 00, 2  01, 3  10 & 4  11 as reqired by Cospas-Sarsat specification
Usually 1 (00) is assigned to the Automatic Fixed ELT (first beacon on board).

Note: In order to keep the follow-up with previous encoded ELT in service, « Simplified Beacon Id »
is displayed with the two presentations, without Specific ELT Number (/TAIL-NB/ as
displayed in previous releases) and with Specific ELT Number (new capability, /TAIL-NB_1).
It gives the same C/S 15 hex when Specific ELT Number is set to “1” (one) as in that case
spare bit 82 & 83 are coded as 00.

Note: The last line of the screen is an “On Line Help” related to the selected field (pointing cursor).

Note: In box 4, the operator shall assign the ELT index on board A/C (by habit ELTA encodes the
Automatic Fixed as “1” for the first one, then 2, 3… but [0] is acceptable).

Note: The 24 bit address may be entered either in decimal (conversion from 24 bit binary to
decimal) or recommended in HEX (conversion from 24 bit binary to Hex value). Value is
right justified.

Note: To keep traceability with the previous ELT in service, Simplified Beacon ID is displayed in two
notations, decimal (/017150041/ in the above screen) and in Hex (new capability,
/H_1A2B3C_1/). The last digit is the ELT index on board the A/C. The operator will select
which one he wants to use on the ELT Identification label. Official beacon ID is not impacted
by this choice (only screen display).

Note: We recommend to keep the default value “Cospas-Sarsat Type Approval #”. If the local
Authority require to use “National Use” the field “C/S Type Approval #” must be set to zero in
order to be accordance with Cospas-Sarsat specification unless otherwise information
given by the local Authority.

Note : For the test protocol we recommend that the Homing signals be removed in order to avoid
false alert. The Cospas-Sarsat message for test protocol is not processed by the Cospas-
Sarsat system. This “TEST” transmission is considered as Non Operational and is
discarded by the system unless the operator contacts the nearest Cospas-Sarsat MCC and
ask to receive the information (location, messages….).

Note: The last line of the screen is an “On Line Help” related to the selected field (pointing cursor).

WARNING: THIS TEST PROTOCOL IS NOT OPERATIONAL. IT MUST NOT BE USE FOR NORMAL
OPERATION ONBOARD AN A/C. THE GOAL OF THIS SPECIAL PROTOCOL IS TO
ALLOW THE POSSIBILITY TO PERFORM REAL TRANSMISSION TEST THROUGH

T. Access to saved reports

The file is saved in the SAVE directory that include the following sub directories: Test, Read,
Maintenance and Update.
The file is automatically directed to its corresponding sub directory.
The first letter of the automatic reference is the first letter of the selected operation, R for Read, M
for maintenance and U for Update.
This letter is merged with the P/N and C/S simplified identification (up to 7 characters).
Date and hour that the record was saved are then added automatically in the file name.
For example “ R_01N65900G_12304542_17150041_January-17-2013_0230” indicates: Read
content, P/N 01N65900 Rev. G, S/N 12304542, with C/S simplified ID 17150041, made on January
17, 2013 at 02h30’.
This is a recommended name but the operator can change it, if required or more convenient for him.
