Non Ferrous Alloys

A non-ferrous alloy is an alloy which does not contain iron. Examples

include bronze (copper and tin) and brass (copper and zinc), as well as
numerousalloys of aluminium, magne

Examples
Some examples of non-ferrous
metals are aluminum, aluminum alloys, and copper, which are often used in
industrial applications such as gutters, roofing, pipes, and electrical. Non-
ferrous metals also include brass, gold, nickel, silver, tin, lead, and
Copper and copper alloys
Copper alloys are metal alloys that have copper as their
principal component. They have high resistance against
corrosion. The best known traditional types are bronze,
where tin is a significant addition, and brass, using zinc
instead.

Classification of copper alloys

zinc.sium, nickel, titanium and others.
Alluminium alloys
• There are basically two types of aluminum alloys.
 Wrought Al – alloys
 Cast Al – alloys
Wrought Al – alloys:
The aluminum alloys which have been mechanically worked are
called as Wrought Al - alloys.
Cast Al - alloys:
These are as the alloys which are used as cast.
Wrought alluminium alloy
Wrought aluminum alloys are used in the shaping
processes: rolling, forging, extrusion, pressing, etc.
There are two principal groups of the wrought aluminum alloys:
 Non heat treatable alloy
 Heat treatable alloy
The Non-Heat-treatable alloys:
• The Al-alloys which cannot be strengthened by heat treatment
are called non heat treatable alloys.
• Strengthening is imparted by cold working processes (strain
hardening).
• Alloys of 1xxx, 3xxx, 4xxx and 5xxx series are non-heat-
treatable.
• The initial strength of these alloys is achieved due to
the hardening effect of the alloying elements: manganese (Mn),
silicon (Si), magnesium (Mg)
The Heat-treatable alloys
• The Al-alloys which are strengthened by heat treatment are
called heat treatable alloys.
• Alloys of 2xxx, 6xxx and 7xxx series are heat-treatable.
• The initial strength of these alloys is achieved due to
the hardening effect of the alloying elements: Copper (Cu),
Silicon (Si), Magnesium (Mg) and Zinc (Zn).

– The temper designations and their sub divisions are
as given below:
• - F : As fabricated.
• - O : Annealed, recrystallized. (Wrought products
only)
• - H : Strain hardened. (Wrought products)
» -H1 : Strain Hardened only
» -H2 : Strain Hardened then partially
annealed.
» -H3 : Strain Hardened then stabilized.
• -W : Solution heat treated
• -T : Thermally treated to produce stable
tempers.
» -T2 : Annealed (cast products only)
» -T3 : Solution heat treated and cold
worked.
