Interactive Reading Model

An interactive reading model is a reading model that recognizes

the interaction of bottom-up and top-down processes simultaneously throughout
the reading process.

Reading for Specific Purposes

1.Reading for Information
Reading for information is a life-long skill. Use the natural curiosity of children to
introduce your child to the world of knowledge inside books. Including non-fiction
will help to provide a balance and variety of genre in your child's reading. Children
are curious, love to learn and enjoy exploring new ideas. Exposing your child to
non-fiction will familiarize him with the structure of this type of book and will help
him learn how to get information from the text. This early exposure will reflect
positively in school.
There is evidence that a parent's beliefs and attitudes about reading will directly
influence children's literacy skills. Parents who have respect for the information
contained in books will pass that respect on to their children. Children need to
know that learning happens all the time, not just at school.

Reading for Appreciation and Enjoyment

The National Library Trust (UK), defines reading for pleasure, also referred to as independent, leisure or
recreational reading, as:

Reading we do of our own free will, anticipating the satisfaction we will get from the act of reading.

They add that it's also reading that may have begun at someone else’s request, which we continue
because we are interested in it. Christina Clark and Kate Rumbold note that reading for pleasure can be
described as an act of play, which allows us to experience different worlds in our imagination and a
creative and active/ interactive process.

Samples:

Reading literary selections, poems, short stories, novels, plays and essays.
(this helps develop your analytical skills as you must consider each of the part of the text separately
before you can interpret the meaning of the work and eventually appreciate reading.)

Reading for Critical Understanding

a technique for discovering information and ideas within a text. Refers to a careful, active, reflective,
analytic reading. It requires the mind to process information, reason, question and evaluate.
