The advancement of technology leads to increase in oil consumption.

Almost all
machines rely on oil for the reason that a small amount of natural gas can produce huge
amounts of energy. The thick black liquid “oil” also known as crude oil or petroleum is a
fossil fuel contains hydrogen and carbon that is used to produce transport fuel. It is also
caused environmental disasters like an oil spill due to transportation, drilling and natural
occurrences. The oil contamination of the water resources results direct marine impact such
as habitat destruction and poison by ingestion.

Drum oil skimmers are versatile equipment that recovers spilled oil from the surface
of water. They are effective in large spill clean ups and are standard equipment for oil clean
up response. A drum skimmer can recover about 95 per cent oil, with only 5 per cent water.
Their grooved surface and oleophilic material gives them higher recovery rates than most
other skimmer technologies.

OPERATING PROCESS

The primary component of the drum skimmer is the rotating drum [1]. Its rotating
motion is the one that causes the forward movement of the skimmer. It also serves as one of
the floatation device of the skimmer. A motor [2] provides the power to the drum [1] which
causes it to rotate. The drum [1] is made of oleophilic material which causes the adhesion of
oil in it. The oil that sticks to the drum [1] is removed by the scrapper [3] that is attached to
the frame [4]. The oil that was scrapped will go to a flexible hose [5] that is attached to a
pump. This pump will push the collected oil to an offsite location – either on ship or on shore.
