ACRONYMS
INTRODUCTION
INTRODUCTION
The radio communication system allows VHF and HF communications thanks to:
- Two VHF systems, which provide:
o Conventional voice mode communication.
- Two HF systems, which provide:
o Long-range voice communication.
The VHF datalinks capabilities are used respectively by the AFIS (refer to ATA23_2).
VHF and HF communications are available from the three cockpit positions.
The VHF and HF systems are compatible of SELCAL, to alert the crew if a call is received
while the frequency is not monitored.
Optional equipment include:
- A third VHF system, which provides:
o Conventional voice mode communication,
o Data communication,
- A Public Address system which is an internal communication system from the cockpit to
the passenger cabin.
CONTROLS
INDICATIONS
The Permanent Radio Bar and the Guidance Panel allow to manage the on-side VHF.
The RADIOS window allows to manage the on-side and opposite side VHF.
VHF SYSTEM
The analog connection from the VHF1 module to the Audio Panel, referred to as backup VHF
would be used in case of failure of:
- The digital audio connection (or NIM), or
- The Audio Panel amplifier.
A backup tuning of the VHF1 (VHF 2) is available using the LH MKB (respectively RH MKB),
via a dedicated bus (ARINC-429) between MKB and VIDL-G module passing through NIM
module. This backup tuning would be used in case of failure of:
- The NIM: interface controllers for management of communication with the ASCB bus,
- The ASCB bus.
HF SYSTEM
PRINCIPLE DIAGRAM
The system 2 included MRC 2, MAU 2 and HF 2 is similar and the corresponding diagram is
not described.
SELCAL SYSTEM
In case a VHF or HF frequency is not monitored, and a call is received on that frequency, a
SELCAL decoder allows:
- Triggering of an advisory CAS message,
- Blinking of the corresponding MIC button on the Audio Panel.
The SELCAL decoder is contained in the NIM. The identifier code is loaded in Audio Panel
and sent to the NIM.
DESIGN PRINCIPLES
The VHF system was designed considering the followings design principles:
- With regard to flight safety:
o A backup audio connection from the VHF1 module to the Audio Panel is available in
case of failure of the digital audio connection or NIM, or Audio Panel amplifier,
o In case of failure of NIM or ASCB bus avionics, a backup tuning of the VHF1
(respectively VHF2) is available using the LH MKB (respectively RH MKB) via a
dedicated bus (ARINC-429) between MKB and VIDL-G module.

RADIOS WINDOW
SELCAL FUNCTION
A SELCAL HF or VHF function enables the pilot to receive a selective call from a HF or a
VHF frequency control.
The pilots hear a gong associated with COM: HF .. SELCAL or COM: VHF .. SELCAL
CAS message.
For a SELCAL HF or VHF transmission, the green lights on the corresponding MIC
pushbutton (audio panel) flash until the MIC selector is pressed.
SELCAL code (4 letters) is displayed on a placard on the front panel.
This paragraph shows step by step the indications which will be displayed for each crew
action on the different controls.
The VHF1, VHF2 and VHF3 (optional) are set and tuned by using one of the three sets of
controls located on the Guidance Panel (GP), the Cursor Control Device (CCD) and the
Multifunction Key Board (MKB).
VHF spacing can be set to 25 kHz or to 8.33 kHz.
The easiest and fastest way of tuning the VHF radios is through the Guidance Panel (GP)
VHF knobs. This access is the most appropriate when many frequency changes must be
done in a short period of time.
Each crew member has his own controls: one rotary knob and one swap pushbutton,
dedicated to his respective VHF set. Only the on-side VHF can be tuned by this knob, VHF1
(and VHF3) on LH side, VHF2 (and VHF3) on RH side. The VHF settings appear in the
upper part of the Permanent Radio Bar of the corresponding crew member's Horizontal
Situation Indicator (HSI).
VHF tuning through the Guidance Panel (GP) is done without positioning the CCD cursor in
the VHF field on the Permanent Radio Bar (PRB):

button on the SAT tab. Selecting any one of the tabs at the top of this page removes this
page and displays the selected tab.
The SAT ON / OFF radio button turns the SATCOM unit to the On or Off state. The
associated SATCOM OFF message is displayed when the Off State is selected.
The Log On State of the SATCOM is displayed in green. The state can be displayed on
two lines. Associated to that state, soft key buttons may be displayed.

SUPPLEMENTARY INFORMATION DGT97831
The other status information, AES (Airborne Earth Station) Class, ICAO Address, Signal
Quality, Satellite and GES (Ground Earth Station ) is displayed in green and is read-only.
The GES Selection button invokes a dialog box that is displayed over this window.
This dialog box displays a list of all GES. For each GES the associated Satellite and
Code is displayed. This dialog box allows for the selection of a GES / Satellite. The list
shall have scrolling capability (including a scroll bar with selection capability) if the list of
GES exceeds the displayable area. Selecting a GES / Satellite highlights both lines. Once
a selection has been made, the Log On button becomes selectable.
Selecting Log On forces a constrained log on to the selected GES and removes the
dialog box. Selecting the “X” in the upper right hand corner closes the dialog box without
making any changes.
Selecting a tab at the top of the window also closes the dialog box and displays the SAT
Additional Details page.
When a ground-to-air call is received, an audio chime is heard. The pilot selects the
Audio Panel SAT button enabling the SAT transceiver and addresses the call.
When a ground-to-air fax is received, an audio chime is heard. There is no further action
required by the pilot.
Phone memory
The SATCOM and FONE have unique Phone Book pages. The SATCOM Phone Book
page is invoked from the SAT tab using the Phone Memory pushbutton. The Phone Book
function allows entry and retrieval of stored phone numbers.
The ALL priority selection is available to view all numbers simultaneously. The name and
number entry is displayed on two lines. The first line shows the name and Priority, the
second line shows the number. Both lines are highlighted (cyan border) when selected by
the cursor.
The Name field supports the “smart” scrolling capability. That is if an “I” is typed into the
Name field, the list of displayed phone numbers is automatically scroll such that the first
entry whose Name begins with “I” is displayed at the top of the list. If a “P” is then, added
the list automatically scrolls such that any entry starting with “IP” is at the top of the list
and so on.
There are four softkeys buttons on the Phone Book page:
- : Selecting ‘Delete’ removes the number from the phone book database and
the list, and clears the selected number / name fields to dashes. The ‘Delete’
pushbutton then becomes unselectable (grayed-out).
- : Selecting the ‘Apply’ button causes that number to be preset on the SAT tab
and this page to be removed.
- : Selecting the ‘Add’ pushbutton adds the name / number to the phone book.
The displayed portion of the phone book moves to that portion of the phone book,
displaying the new name / number in the context of the listing.
- : If a pilot doesn’t wish to do any action on the page, the ‘Cancel’ button is
utilized. The ‘Cancel’ pushbutton is always selectable when the pilot enters the
Phone Book page.

SUPPLEMENTARY INFORMATION DGT97831
The selected Name and Number fields initially default to white dashes. To enter a number
to be stored, a name, number, and priority must be entered via the MKB. If no priority is
entered, the display sends the priority to the database as ALL. This is not a new priority,
but is an indication to Electronic Phone Book (EPB) not to filter phone listings by priority.
Once all data has been entered, the ‘Add’ pushbutton becomes selectable. Selecting
‘Add’ moves the information into the phone memory’s database, and clears the fields and
returns the field to the default state of white dashes. If a name is typed, entered, but
already exists in the phone memory database, when ‘Add’ is selected, a dialog box shall
be invoked asking if the existing number should be overwritten (“Overwrite?” with button
for ‘Yes’ and ‘No’). Selecting ‘Yes’ replaces the name / number. Selecting ‘No’ maintains
the name / number as displayed. If a name or number is not in the phone memory and
the operator does not wish to remain on the page (and utilize other buttons), the operator
uses the ‘Cancel’ pushbutton.
When using the database, once a number has been selected from the list, the number is
displayed in the number field at the top of the window, the associated name is displayed
in the name field, and the ‘Delete’ and ‘Apply’ buttons become selectable. At this point,
the operator can modify the listing by putting the cursor over the desired field and
entering the new value on the MKB. If the operator wants to change the phone number,
the cursor is placed over the Number field and the operator types in the new number on
the MKB.
The EPB is a database file that may contain up to 200 SATCOM phone number entries
and up to 50 FONE phone number entries. The SATCOM phone book and FONE phone
book operate independently, For example, if a number is stored in the SATCOM Phone
Book, the same name/number would have to be stored separately in the FONE phone
book. Only one operator can access the SATCOM Phone Book or FONE Phone Book at
a time.
The EPB can be updated by two methods:
- Pilot entry using the respective Phone Book page
PC-based tool. The PC-based tool is available to develop the phone books off the
aircraft. The SATCOM and FONE phone numbers are loaded as a single database file
using a data loader tool. The EPB is a separately loadable database.
NOTE
The entire number must be entered on the MKB (versus editing the number).
As soon as the operator enters the first digit of the number,
the number field only displays the digits entered (the old number is removed from the display).
FONE TAB
Utilizing the FONE tab places a call through the Magnastar system which can then send the
call via UHF phone or SATCOM depending on the installation.
The status indications and associated action buttons for FONE functionality are shown
below:
When a ground-to-air call is received, an audio chime is heard. The pilot selects the Audio
Panel FONE button enabling the FONE transceiver and addresses the call.
When a ground-to-air fax is received, an audio chime is heard. There is no further action
required by the pilot.
To make an air-to-ground call using the FONE function, display the FONE tab and ensure
the FONE Status indicates AVAILABLE, enter a phone number using the MKB, depress the
FONE button on the Audio Panel. To initiate the call, depress the FONE button on the Audio
Panel or select the CALL button on the FONE tab.
The FONE function allows Call Transfer and Call Conference capabilities through the Audio
Panel.

Call Transfer is available for air-to-ground and ground-to-air calls. Once the call is
established, depress the Audio Panel XFER button. Use the Audio Panel dial knob to enter
the Station ID of the Magnastar handset you wish to transfer the call to. The Call Transfer is
completed when the transferred call is answered by the handset. A successful Call Transfer
will remove the Audio-Panel from the call. The Call Transfer function times out after one
minute if there is no answer.
Call Conference is available for air-to-ground and ground-to-air calls. Once the call is
established, depress the Audio Panel CONF button. Use the Audio Panel dial knob to enter
the Station ID of the Magnastar handset you wish to conference the call to. The Call
Transfer is completed when the transferred call is answered by the handset. The Audio
Panel permits multiple users on the aircraft to be added within a conference call using the
Station ID of the Magnastar handset. The Call Transfer function times out after one minute if
there is no answer.
There can be up to 9 Magnastar Station IDs in the airplane. Station IDs are programmed
using the Magnastar Interface Panel found on each handset. The Magnastar Interface Panel
displays its own Station ID for that handset.
The FONE Phone Book button invokes the FONE Phone Book page which is similar to
the SATCOM Phone Book, but without the Priority button.
The Number field allows for the entry of an 18-digit phone number. The Name field
displays the associated name (18-characters) of the phone number, if the number was
selected from the FONE Phone Book page.
The SATCOM system is an option and does not feature any safety related item.
