2.3 BS Psychology Introduction to Counseling

Movie Review: “Every Child is Special”

I feel happy and contented with what I have in my life right now. I feel
that I am responsible for helping other people especially the children who
needs help in explaining what they feel and who they are. There is no part of
the movie wherein I dislike. I like all of the scenes because every part is
important and really explain the situation of the characters in the movie.
In my own observation, the movie could work in the real world especially
here in the Philippines. A lot of people, mostly or some Filipino parents are not
knowledgeable to mental health or situational problems of their children, like
in the past there is no huge cases of having depression or something that
makes a child stressed because of adapting the modern world. In this
generation, the youth have knowledge to this already and some have
experienced about this cases so there will be a difference and I feel that my
generation will help one's mental health or disability.
The story reveals the main issue or problem in the movie which is
Dyslexia, a mental disorder or a reading disability. For me the movie also
showed the culture of people in which judgment of others are big deal, like
Ishaan's father cannot accept his son's situation at first. He would think of
what others will say of having a son with disability. Another one is the effect
of being harsh with people especially to the children. Ishaan had a dominating
father that makes him hurt and to the people around where he studies who
sometimes gives him punishment and laughs at him when he did they think
was wrong. That is why Ishaan feel demotivated and cut classes. As a human,
we must end stereotyping and be understandable to what others are
experiencing.
If I were to be part of the story, I want to be one of the classmates of
Ishaan whom he is close with. Like Rajan, his classmate in the boarding
school. I want to be Ishaan's friend and will motivate him in school and will
help him the things I know. I want Ishaan to enjoy going to school and forget
his weaknesses. If I have a classmate like Ishaan in real life, I want to know
more about him and be a friend with him because I like his personality whom
he just enjoy life and being kind to others. If I were his classmate and a friend
I will comfort him when a teacher scolds at him and when our classmates will
laugh at him. For me, being a good friend will inspire people to be like you.
They will feel happy and forget the negativities in life. They will don't mind
who will judge them instead he/she will improve himself/herself to be a better
person. So I will improve Ishaan and will appreciate his abilities.
If I were given a chance to change the title of the movie, I will not
change it instead I will stick with "Every Child Is Special" because it’s also the
title I want if ever I will be the one who give title to the movie. Every child is
unique and different talent. Until we get older, we learn new things that we
are capable of doing it. Appreciating one's capabilities makes that person to
be at his or her best. If Ishaan is not doing well in scholastic performance,
then talk to him what's wrong and help him the things as long as you can. If
he is good in painting, then appreciate it so that he will feel he belong to the
world he is living.
The movie realized me that I am not just a type of person who likes
children, who enjoys playing and bond with children. This movie realized me
to appreciate the strength and skill of children whom they are best at. As a
Psychology student I become more helpful and understanding to people. The
movie showed me the sense of responsibility as a person to understand that
every person is experiencing different battles. Maybe for you or for me it’s not
a big thing but for others it is a big thing that makes them struggle and that
is the time to ask them for you to be someone to lean on. Oftentimes we are
blinded by the strict rules and high standards in meeting academic
requirements, that, we fail to see the person’s worth. We believe that an
underperforming child, someone who can hardly read and write and
demonstrate certain skills and knowledge in the given situation is not worth
of our time. If fate put me to be a teacher in the future, I will show empathy
and equity with limitations. I will always keep in mind that every child have
potentials that makes them to be better version of themselves. If there is no
one to believe them, be the one who believe and teach them to believe on
their self too.
