Connected but Alone

“...and What I’ve found is that our little devices, those little devices in our pockets,
are so psychologically powerful that they don’t only change what we do, they change
what we are.”
Technology has pushed its boundaries so far that men could imagine, which had
created so much opportunities, connected so many lives, saved many people, innovated
many products and made a thousand stories of how human kind strived into greatness.
Communication is one of the primary factor that lead people to create and develop things
they desire to have. As a result, communication is one aspect that was thoroughly
developed by people through the technological advancements they had created through
the years. It made them connected, updated, and notified by each one’s life happenings.
However, does these innovations really served its purpose?
Communication serves the mere purpose of making people understand each other,
enabling them to express their thoughts and feelings. The modern communication
processes, which commonly involves mobile devices and computers, available to anyone,
at anytime, can certainly offer this feature, however, people became dependent, so much
dependent on technological communication that they forgot how to communicate and act
as humans. Sherry Turkle mentioned in her speech that most people would rather text
than talk. This made me realize, that indeed, people forgotten how to communicate as
humans. Humans are the only beings gifted with reasoning faculty. The intervention of
technology , however, made this gift become less and less useful. When people talk, they
develop their social and speaking skills, cognitive reasoning and also vocabulary. These
skills are important in building stable and mutual relationships, and expressing exact
interpretation of ideas being conveyed, resulting to the elimination of various
communicative breakdowns. It is also through talking that people see their identity,
through how they would act and response to various situations. Communication does not
end only by sending and receiving messages. It contributes to a holistic development,
communal stability, a nation building.
Aside from the gift of speech, people are also gifted of free will. The duty is rested
upon the to choose; to choose how to communicate, but only at the time they realize that
personal conversation is as important as food and water, it is the time they
communicated really as humans.
