Abstract:

The world we live in right now is constantly being devastated by garbage

problems existing everywhere and in order to prevent this problem from getting

worse as well as in the hopes of eradicating it entirely. Simply being aware of the

problem goes a long way as it increases our consciousness and we become warier of

what we are doing and how it affects us as a whole thus why the government

constantly educates its people especially the youth about these proper waste disposal

and environmental topics. Thus, it is essential to determine if these efforts are not

going to waste. This cross-sectional and descriptive survey was made exactly to

capture to determine that as it aimed capture the awareness level on 3R’s as waste

disposal of the Senior High School students of Brent Hospital and Colleges

Incorporated S.Y. 2018-2019 and to determine if there is a difference between the

awareness of male students when compared to female students. The results of the

study found that majority of the students have an average or satisfactory level of

awareness (82.2%) while there were some who have poor awareness levels (7.4%)

and on the other hand there were others who have high awareness levels (10.4%). The

overall awareness of the Senior High School students of the institution is satisfactory

or average at a weighted mean of 10.15. When the awareness levels of the male (61)

students were compared to the female (169) students it was found that there was a

significant difference with the difference being that female students have higher

awareness levels than the male students meaning that female students are more

environmentally aware and conscious than their male counterparts. With the results
2

the researchers conclude that there is a satisfactory awareness level thus there is no

lack of awareness but there is a need for reinforcement for the awareness on waste

disposal and management, this is to increase the environmental consciousness of the

students to higher degrees and to help prevent the litter problem of the institution.

Chapter 1

Introduction
Background of the Study:
One of the greatest problems that the world is facing today is environmental

pollution, which is causing grave and irreparable damages to the natural world and

human society. Around the world, waste generation rates are rising. In 2012, the

worlds’ cities generated 1.3 billion tons of solid waste per year, amounting to a

footprint of 1.2 kilograms per person a day. With rapid population growth and

urbanization, municipal waste generation is expected to rise to 2.2 billion tons by

2025 (Nadia Scharen - Guivel, 2017). High amount of garbage is being produced

every day which leads to it becoming harder to manage and maintain in most

countries especially on the third world or developing countries which do not have the

budget and have not developed adequate waste management policies or systems, trash

collection services, or government institutions to properly manage their wastes.

(Climate Policy Watcher, 2018).

One such third world country is the Philippines which produce a lot o0f

garbage with an average of 35,000 tons of garbage generated daily with Metro Manila

alone producing nearly a qarter of that amount at 8,600 tons per day. (Xinhuanet,

2017). The Philippines even ranks 3rd in the biggest dumper of plastics in the ocean

generating 2.7 million metric tons of plastic garbage each year. (Rappler, 2015).

Another city, besides, Metro Manila that faces waste management problems is
4

Zamboanga where garbage is considered one of the biggest problems of the city. It’s

now even being labeled as a “trade mark” of the city. (Zamboanga Times, 2015)

The problem is not being ignored, however, and the Philippine government is

making efforts to control the problem of waste and develop adequate systems for

waste management and disposal. This includes the implementation of laws for

example: the 2000 Ecological Solid Waste Management Act (Business Inquirer,

2017) and the Anti-Littering law. (MMDA, 2018) Yet these laws especially the

former have yet to reach its objectives due to major constraints or drawbacks with one

of these being the “Not in My Back Yard” attitude of the Filipino citizens. (Inquirer,

2018) This attitude is an act of selfishness as to keep their home and surroundings

clean they would even dump their waste in their neighborhood. (CBCP News, 2014).

Removing this kind of mentality is important if we are ever to continue with

environmental protection.

The first step to removing such mentality is to raise awareness on waste

disposal and waste management because without proper understanding of waste

management issues, even the most thought-out plans becomes questionable. (S.E.

Hasan, 2011) Another importance of awareness on waste disposal will create a

change on how people look at garbage. Most people are raised to believe that garbage

is garbage, it should not be touched nor one should go near it (Sarino, 2014, cited in

Paghasian, 2017, p.5)

This is why the DepEd has decided to strengthen environmental education in

both public and private schools urging them to take the lead in promoting
5

environmental awareness by enhancing environmental education and pursuing school

activities that nurture the environment. (PhilStar, 2011) This was further supported by

the National Solid Waste Commission (2015) by releasing Resolution No.117 which

contains the mandate that states “ WHEREAS, Section 55 of RA 9003 that the

Commission shall, in coordination with DECS now DepED, TESDA, CHED, DILG

and PIA, conduct a continuing education and information campaign on solid waste

management, which aims to develop public awareness of the ill-effects of not

properly managed waste and the community-based solutions to the solid waste

problem such as resource conservation and recover, recycling, segregation at source,

reuse, reduction and compost of solid waste”. The DepED responded to the mandate

by releasing two DepED Order 5, S. 2014 (DepEd, 2014) and DepED Order 10, S.

2016 (DepED, 2016) which both aim to increase the awareness and compliance of

solid waste management.

Environmental education of the youth on practices such as proper waste

disposal is important because the youth are the back bone of the nation and when they

are educated they can make their community more environmentally friendly by

adopting environmentally friendly practices such as recycling of different materials

along with preserving resources such as water and electricity. (Ramchandra Acharya,

2013) This is why usually there are several community surveys that aim to capture the

level of knowledge, attitudes, practices, (KAP) of students regarding the environment.

(Ahmad et al., 2015 cited in Eveth P. Barloa, Lustina P. Lapie and Christian Paul P.

de la Cruz, p.147). Therefore, there is really a need to bring awareness to students in

6

terms of waste disposal and the school should practice it if not it will impede or

obstruct the mandates. The researchers have observed that quite a number of Senior

High School Students of Brent Hospital and Colleges Incorporated that eat on the

benches and bleachers on the covered court leave their waste such as plastic wrappers

and water bottles on the area. The researchers have also heard that multiple faculty

members of the aforementioned institution complain about the untidy and unkempt

classrooms filled with litter. These observations show evidence that there is a

possibility that students lack awareness in waste disposal. Thus, the researchers

decided to conduct the study to prove if there is indeed a lack of awareness in waste

disposal from the Senior High School students in hopes that it may be supplemented

if proven to be lacking.

Statement of the Problem:

This study aimed to evaluate and assess the awareness level of Senior High

School Students studying in Brent Hospital and Colleges Incorporated on the waste

disposal.

Specifically, this study answered the following questions:

1.) What is the level of awareness on 3R’s (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle) as waste

disposal among the Senior High School Students?

2.) What is the prevalence of the level of awareness among the Senior High

School Students towards waste disposal?

7

3.) Is there a significant difference of awareness level between the Male Students

and Female Students?

Hypothesis:

There is no significant difference between the awareness levels of the Male

and Female.

Significance of the Study:

The results of this study will be greatly beneficial to the students, the faculty,

the institution, the city and other researchers.

Students

The acquired data from the study will be able to provide insight to the

student’s awwareness of the waste disposal practices and how simply becoming

aware is significant in helping to keep the environment clean as well as preventing the

garbage problem of the city from worsening.

Faculty

The resulting data from the study will give the faculty members further

information on the awareness on waste disposal which they can use to identify if they

need to create activities that are geared towards promoting awareness or activities that

help fortify the existing awareness.

Institution
8

The data generated by the study can help the Brent Hospital and Colleges

Incorporated to deduce if there is a need of reinforcing or raising awareness on waste

disposal which can prevent problems such as littering from ever occurring or

becoming rampant inside the campus. This allows the institution to be more appealing

and welcoming due to having clean surroundings.

The City

Similar to the institution the given data would be able to guide Zamboanga

City to know if there is awareness on waste disposal or lack thereof which will allow

them to create programs to raise knowledge on the topic and even put it to great use

such as clean up drives.

Future Researchers

The results of the study will also be beneficial to other researchers as a base

point if they decide to delve deeper into the factors affecting the awareness levels on

waste disposal such as social background, house waste management, parent’s

educational attainment, among others or the effects of high or low awareness levels to

the community, institution and the environment.

Scope and Limitations:

This study was conducted at Brent Hospital and Colleges Incorporated R.T.

Lim Boulevard, Zamboanga City and the study was carried out to the Senior High

School students studying in the institution school year 2018-2019. The study had a

sample size of 230 students. The study focused only on the awareness level of the
9

students on waste disposal specifically on the knowledge towards the waste disposal

method which is the 3 R’s Reduce, Reuse, Recycle

Definition of Terms:

3 R’s (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle) – refers to the process of reducing your waste,

reusing it for another purpose or recycling it for variable materials

Awareness – refers to the knowledge towards waste disposal.

Gender – refers to the biological orientation of an individual through their sex organ

making them either male or female.

Litterbugs – refers to senior high students who are unaware or has low levels in

awareness towards 3R’s as waste disposal.

Respondents – refers to the Senior High School students that will be part of the

research.

Students – refers to senior high students who are knowledgeable or has high

awareness levels towards 3R’s as waste disposal.

Waste Disposal – refers to the methods of throwing out waste or garbage such as the

3 R’s. (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle).

Waste Disposal

Waste management or Waste disposal as defined by Rinkesh (2018) is the

process of treating solid wastes and offers multiple ways of solutions for recycling

items that don’t belong to trash. It is about how garbage can be used as a valuable

research. Waste management is something that each and every household and

business owner in the world needs. Waste management disposes of the products and

substances that you have use in safe and efficient manner.

Waste collection and rubbish disposal play an important role in the global

cleanliness and sustainability drive, with people’s health and the conservation of

resources but the most important for waste collection is to protect the environment

and the welfare of the population. This is because improper waste disposal can

severely harm individuals and can also kill wildlife along with vegetation (Dee

Mohammed, 2016)

In a study by Albert P. Aquino, Jamaica Angelica P. Deriquito, and Meliza A.

Festejo (2013) they summarized the RA 9003’s description of waste disposal as a

discipline that is associated with the control of generation, storage, collection, transfer

and transport, processing and disposal of wastes.

11

3 R’s (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle)

According to John Brennan (2010) reducing is the first and most effective, it

means reducing your consumption or buying less. Reusing is to find different

purposes for items that you might consider throwing out which in turn reduces their

consumption of new resources. Recycling is the method where valuable materials

from items thrown in the trash are extracted and afterwards they turn them into new

products.

The 3 R’s is important because of multiple reasons the practice of these 3

methods of waste reduction and waste disposal will allow us to conserve the little

natural resources we have left, prevent the decreasing of natural spaces, reduce the

space for landfills and create more jobs through the establishment of recycling

facilities. All of these ultimately add up to us eventually having a sustainable and

stable future not only for us but for our future generations. (Michael Owen, 2017)

Reuse, reduce and recycle is one of the most popular go green adages but

there are still a lot of people who haven’t integrated the concept in their lives. This is

simply because of convenience as it is more convenient to buy a plastic bag over the

counter than carrying your own reusable shopping bag. It’s easier to throw away

bottles and old newspaper than go to a recycling company. It’s easier to throw away

bottle caps than to turn them in to necklace pendants (Rappler, 2013)

With the amount of garbage that countries are producing today it becomes

increasingly difficult for them to properly dispose and manage waste especially

developing countries due to multiple factors affecting the success of the program

these factors being the stakeholders, solid waste services, methods of solid waste

management along with other factors this was stated in a study entitled “Solid waste

management challenges for cities in developing countries” (Liliana Guerrero, Ger

Maas and William Hogland, 2012) the data coincides with a study with a title of

“Challenges and opportunities associated with waste management in India” (Kumar

et. al, 2017) in India which is also a developing country where in the conclusion that

states that they face multiple problems such as stakeholders that are unable to develop

adequate waste management system, the difficulty of finding a sustainable and

economically viable waste management systems and Kumar also found that there’s

also a lack of participation, responsibility and awareness towards waste on the

community. Solid waste management and waste disposal is also a problem in the

Philippines due to its constant growth and the amount of challenges it faces in making

a proper solid waste management and waste disposal system this was study in a study

conducted by the Senate of The Philippines (2017) entitled “Philippine Solid Wastes

at a Glance”. This was further supported by a study conducted by Alicia L. Castillo,

Suehiro Otoma (2013) entitled “Status of Solid Waste Management in the

Philippines” in which they were able to conclude that the 3 R’s system in and the

disposal through sanitary landfills are not effective and efficient in its purpose of

being environmentally friendly.

13

In a study with a title of “Waste education and awareness strategy: towards

solid waste management (SWM) program at UKM” it was stated that it’s very

important for students to be aware of the environmental problems that we are facing

today for they will play a big role in the success or failure in solving these

environmental problems the students’ awareness about environmental problems and

solutions can be increased through education. In most cases it is a given fact that

students are involved in the solid waste management activities conducted in

the university campus as one of their learning processes. The particular skills and

knowledge gained from environmental education would help in changing human

behavior towards the environment. Students with some knowledge on environmental

education are more motivated to take part in environmental protection activities and

plans thus would generate new ideas for the solution of environmental problems.

(Asmawati Desa, Nor Ba’yah Abd Kadir and Fatimah Yusoof, 2009) According to

the results of a study entitled “Awareness, Attitudes and Practices of School Students

towards household waste management” by C.D. Licy, Raghavan, Kamath, T.K.,

Anies and C.T. (2013) students are knowledgeable and are aware of solid waste

management and proper disposal but are lacking in the practice of doing it along with

that they were able to also find out that somehow higher secondary students were

inferior to the results produced by the high school students in that area. When

compared to a similar study with a title “Exploring secondary school students’

understanding and practices of waste management in Ogun State, Nigeria” by

Ayodeji Ifegbesan (2010) which has a similar result that students have enough
14

awareness and knowledge but lack practice and the statement of the previous study

where secondary students had inferior results can be observed here because although

the results were satisfactory it was inconsistent with one another but a thing to note

from this study is that the researcher was able to observe results that male students

were more knowledgeable than female students however female students had higher

scores in practice than male which is actually plausible because it is common for

women to do household chores and be more involved in waste management than men.

Similar studies on solid waste management conducted in the Philippines show

similar results as observed in the study conducted by Margarita Paghasian entitled

“Awareness and Practices on Solid Waste Management among College Students in

Mindanao State University of Maigo School of Arts and Trades” (2017) had similar

results of students being aware in the solid waste management but falling short in the

practice of solid waste management although the results gathered from the study were

slightly higher than the two previous studies mentioned, the researcher also made an

observation that awareness and practice go hand in hand as higher scores in

awareness lead to higher scores in practice. However, a related study entitled

“Knowledge, Attitudes, and Practices on a Solid Waste Management among

Undergraduate Students” in a Philippine State University” by Eveth P. Barloa,

Lustina P. Lapie and Christian Paul P. de la Cruz (2016) contradicts this statement, as

in their conclusion they stated that knowledge and attitude were inconsistent with

good practice but they did state that knowledge and attitude towards waste

management explains the outcome for the rating obtained in practice

15

Researcher’s Rationale

After reading the related studies the researchers have observed that waste

management is indeed a significant problem that is difficult to solve around the world

with emphasis on developing countries or 3rd world countries due to the fact that

solutions such as Solid Waste Management face a lot of challenges in being

implemented properly. With one of its greatest challenges being the lack of

participation in the people of the community which may have resulted from lack of

awareness and or a negative towards the solution which hinders their practice. Even

so high levels of awareness do not guarantee that a person will properly practice

waste disposal and waste management yet awareness is still very significant as it has

a positive effect on the overall practice of an individual. With students being the

easiest to educate due to the fact that they are staying in learning institutions and the

best ones to educate because they will be future leaders. Hence why, it is crucial to

know the levels of awareness students have in a learning institution for us to know if

there is a need for further reinforcement. The study will be different from the related

studies because the researchers focused on a specific type of disposal which is the

3R’s (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle) and aims to obtain the awareness level specifically on

the knowledge on the previously mentioned waste disposal.

Methodology

This chapter will discuss the research design, research locale, research

instruments, sampling procedure, research procedure and the statistical analysis.

Research Design

This study had a descriptive, cross sectional research design. It will describe

the data and it deals with data acquired at a certain point of time.

Research Locale

The study was conducted at Brent Hospital and Colleges Incorporated, Senior

High Department, R.T. Lim Boulevard, Zamboanga City.

Participants

The respondents of the study were the senior high school students of the

institution. The population from which the sample will be taken includes the 14

sections of the Grade 11 and 12 with a total population of 596.

Sampling Procedure

To find the sample size of the study the researchers used confidence interval

using a 5% margin of error afterwards the researchers used Stratified sampling then

Systematic Sampling for choosing the samples. The population of the Senior High

Students is around 596 when passed through a confidence interval tool the sample

size for the study equals to 230 students.

18

Research Instrument

The questionnaire will be the primary tool for gathering data for this study.

The researchers used a self-constructed questionnaire thus, the researchers conducted

reliability and validity testing for the questionnaire. The questionnaire was tested

using the parallel forms reliability where in two different groups of participants were

given and asked to answer the questionnaire. The research instrument is a check list

questionnaire where they mark their answers with ( ).

Validity and Reliability Testing

The reliability of the research instrument will be tested through the use of the

method Parallel Forms Reliability in which the questionnaire was tested to two

different groups. The test was administered to two related groups but not the main

group. Afterwards the results were gathered and correlated. The Researchers used

Kuder and Richardson 20 for the formula of acquiring the reliability which garnered a

reliability coefficient of 0.6153 which can be interpreted as fairly reliable.

The validity of the questionnaire was verified by a professional on waste

management.

Ethical Considerations

The respondents were given a letter that indicates their willingness to

participate in the study. The roles of the respondents were explained in brief.

Anonymity among the respondents was maintained with utmost importance –

meaning their identities were never divulged. In addition, the researchers informed
19

them that if there are any problems or circumstances that will arise, they can stop

participating in the study at any time with without any particular sanctions or

penalties

Research Procedures

The researchers first secured permission from the principal of the Senior High

School department through a letter of consent. Once the permission was secured the

researchers then proceed obtained consent from the respondents. Once the

respondents have given us their consent the researchers then conducted the data

gathering through handing out the questionnaires to the respondents. The

questionnaire given to the participants is a self-constructed questionnaire. During the

time that they were answering the questionnaires the researchers were present for

them to approach in case they encounter difficulties in answering the questionnaire

which will be cleared up by the researchers. When they were finished answering the

data was gathered. Afterwards the researchers thanked and ensured the respondents of

their confidentiality. The data acquired from the respondents were grouped through a

3 point likert scale based on the respondents score with 15-11 being high, 10-6 as

average and 5-1 rated as poor. The scores are based on the number of correct answers

of the respondents and the answers for the questions are: 1.) No 2-3.) Yes 4-6.) No 7-

9.) Yes 10.) No 11.) Yes 12.) No 13-15.) Yes.

20

High Average Poor

Statistical Analysis

The data was analyzed with the use of weighted mean to determine the level

of awareness among the senior high school students. To determine the prevalence

level of awareness among the Senior High School students towards waste disposal

frequency distribution table were used. To determine the difference of awareness

towards waste disposal between the Male and Female students it was done through

the use of t-test with unequal variance.

Results and Discussion

Table 1:

Level of Awareness of the Students on 3 R’s as Waste Disposal.

Rating Frequency Percentage

Poor 17 7.4

(1-5)

Average 189 82.2

(6-10)

High 24 10.4

(11-15)

Total 230 100

The table illustrates that out of 230 students there are 17 students or 7.4

percent of the students have a poor level of awareness, 189 students or 82.2 percent of

which have an average level of awareness and lastly, we have 24 students or 10.4

percent which have the rating of high level of awareness.

These results show us that the majority of the Senior High school students of

Brent Hospital and Colleges Incorporated have an average awareness level towards

the 3R’s as waste disposal which means that they have a very good base knowledge

of the 3R’s as waste disposal but because of the fact that the 3R’s as a saying that has

been around for dozens of years and even elementary students have an idea of what it
22

is. Shows that there should be a higher level of awareness on the aforementioned

waste disposal but only 10 percent of the students were able to reach this high level of

awareness we can then say that these students due to having high levels of awareness

are more environmental conscious and they themselves practice the 3R’s on a regular

basis not to say the others don’t, but out of them these students are the most likely to

litter and this can be backed up by the study of Margarita Paghasian (2017) where

they observed that higher scores of awareness go hand in hand with higher scores of

practice. Whilst there are 7.4 percent who unfortunately have very little idea or

awareness towards the concept of 3R’s as Waste Disposal this suggests that they may

have an idea of what it is due to it being a popular saying but not enough idea on what

it actually is, its purpose and how it works or they might fit the statement that was

said by Rappler (2013) that they did not incorporate the concept of 3R’s into their

lives due to convenience.

23

Table 2:

Weighted Mean and Weights.

Rating Poor Average High Weighted

(1-5) (6-10) (11-15) Mean

Frequency 17 189 24 10.15

Weight 5 10 15

Table 2 shows us the frequency of the data based on the scores achieved by

the students, the weight for each rating which is the highest score possible for the

rating and the weighted mean. The weighted mean computed using a statistical tool

results to 10.15 when rounded off to the nearest tenth results to a weighted mean of

10 which falls under the category of Average. The overall awareness level of the

Senior High School students is satisfactory or average.

The result of the weighted mean shows us that students are indeed aware of

the 3R’s as waste disposal which means that they are aware of a form of waste

disposal. This means that a lack of awareness does not exist but there is a need of

reinforcement for the already existing level of awareness that they do have because

the levels of awareness of students in studies are considered as satisfactory which in

this case is true.

24

Table 3:

Difference between the Level of Awareness between Male and Female

Respondents.

Gender Sample Sample Sample P-value T-test Decision

Average Size Standard value

Deviation

Male 7.7459 61 1.3923 0.0343341 -2.133106 There is a

significant

difference

Female 8.2278 169 2.1575

On the table we can see the results of the T-test since our P-value which is

0.0343341 is lesser than value of our alpha which has a value of 0.05 we can say that

through statistical computation there is a significant difference between the level of

awareness of the Male Students when compared to the Female students. Our T-test

statistic value is -2.133106 which goes well the 95% critical value accepted range

which is either -1.9739 or 1.9739 because we are conducting a two-tailed test thus

giving us more support that there is a significant difference between their levels of

awareness.

The resulting data shows us that female students actually have higher levels of

awareness compared to male students which contradicts the study of Ayodeji

Ifegbesan (2010) which he stated that male students are more knowledgeable than

female students while female students have better practices than male students. From
25

the results we can infer that male students are more likely to be in need of teachings

on waste disposal methods such as the 3R’s and we can even go as to say that they are

the ones who are most likely to improperly dispose their trash or are to be litterbugs

because if this study finds that female students are more aware or knowledgeable and

another study finds that they have practices this implies that males have lesser

knowledge and worse practice compared to them.

26

Chapter 5

Conclusions and Recommendations

The researchers with the results of this study was able to determine that the

majority of the students have average awareness levels with regards to the 3R’s as

waste disposal and that the overall knowledge that they do have with the topic is at a

satisfactory rating however there are still students who are unaware or barely aware

of the concept of the 3R’s as waste disposal which can be concerning as stated by

Rappler in their report the 3R’s is a popular go green adage that is known worldwide

so for them to not have barely any idea of it can mean that they barely have any idea

of waste management as well. But there is no lack of awareness on the senior highs

school students, there is however, a need to reinforce the already existing knowledge

that they have on the 3R’s and waste disposal in general to ensure that they can reach

higher levels of awareness and that all the awareness of the students be satisfactory or

above satisfactory. As for the comparison between the male and female students we

have found that there is a significant difference between them where the female has

higher awareness levels when contradicts a similar study by Ayodeji Ifegbisan (2010)

where in his study he has found that males have higher awareness levels than female

while females have better practice than male when compared to our study we can then

conclude that females both have better practice and better knowledge when compared

to male students.
27

The researchers recommend that the institution should create programs and

activities that deal with the topic of environmental awareness and waste disposal or

management as this activities will help in further reinforcing the pre-existing

awareness levels of the students while at the same simultaneously increasing the

firmness of the implementations of environmentally healthy practices that the

institution is practicing such example of this practice is the CLAYGO (Clean As You

Go) which has reminders on the canteens but is rarely done by the students. Along

with that we also recommend to increase the number of trash bins and to include

separate bins for biodegradable, recyclable and non-biodegradable waste. The

researchers also recommend that if a study on waste management is to be conducted

by future researchers the scope should be wider whereas it should also include the

tertiary levels or the different college students in the institution to help us determine if

they can also be linked to the litter problem in the institution or if they have similar

awareness levels to the Senior High School Students.
