 ADDRESSING

Four levels of addresses are used in an internet employing

the TCP/IP Protocols : Physical , Logical , Port and Specific.

PHYSICAL ADDRESSES (MAC Address )

 The physical address is also called the MAC address and it is

generated by the Manufacturer of NIC (Network interface card).
 The physical address ,also known as ,the link address ,is the address of the
node as defined by its LAN and WAN.

 It is included in the frame used by the data link layer .

 It is the lowest-level address .
 The Media Access Control (MAC) address , MAC addresses are Six
bytes (48 bits) that manufacturers of network adapters burn into
their products to uniquely identify them .
 Example : 01:02:31:a2:b3:cf
  NETWORK INTERFACE CARD (NIC)
A network interface card
(NIC) is computer circuit board or card that is installed in a computer so that it can be
connected to a network .
 HOW TO FIND YOUR MAC ADDRESS
(PHYSICAL ADDRESS)

 Click start then run

 Enter : cmd
 Enter : ipconfig / all

The Physical Address is your MAC address ; it will look like 00-15 E9-2B-99-3C. You
will have a physical address for each network connection you have

LOGICAL ADDRESS (IP ADDRESS )

 Internet Protocol Address (or IP address) is a 32 bits unique address that computing
device use to identify itself and communicate with other devices in the Internet
protocol network
 IP address uniquely identify all the computers on the public Internet.
 It signifies the address of both the sender and receiver of packets on a network .
 Example : 172.16.254.1(IPv4)32 bits
 2001:db8:0:1234:0:567:8:1(IPv6)128 bits

TYPES OF IP ADDRESS

 Static IP address
 Dynamic IP address

STATIC IP ADDRESS : A static IP address is an IP address that can be manually

configured for a device and it will never change .
DYNAMIC IP ADDRESS : A dynamic IP address is an IP address assigned by a DHCP
(Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol ) server which can be change automatically
any time .

Port Address :
In TCP / IP model, the label assigned to a process is
called a port address.

~ A port in TCP / IP is 16-bits in length

Specific Address :
User-friendly address designed at the level of
application
layer is known as specific address.
Example : ~ email address (e.g.
baforouzan@gmail.com )

~ website address. ( e.g. www.flipkart.com )
