John
1:1-51
In beginning was the Word, and the Word was toward the God, and god was the Word.
1   ᾿Εν ἀρχῇ ἦν ὁ λόγος, καὶ ὁ λόγος ἦν πρὸς τὸν θεόν, καὶ θεὸς ἦν ὁ λόγος.
This (one) was in beginning toward the God. All (things) through him came to be, and
2   Οὗτος ἦν ἐν ἀρχῇ πρὸς τὸν θεόν. 3   πάντα δι’ αὐτοῦ ἐγένετο, καὶ
apart from him came to be not-but one (thing).
χωρὶς αὐτοῦ ἐγένετο οὐδὲ ἕν.
Which has come to be in him life was, and the life was the light of the men;
ὃ γέγονεν 4   ἐν αὐτῷ ζωὴ ἦν, καὶ ἡ ζωὴ ἦν τὸ φῶς τῶν ἀνθρώπων· 5
and the light in the darkness is shining, and the darkness it not overpowered.
  καὶ τὸ φῶς ἐν τῇ σκοτίᾳ φαίνει, καὶ ἡ σκοτία αὐτὸ οὐ κατέλαβεν.

Came to be man having been sent forth beside God, name to him John; this (one)
6   ᾿Εγένετο ἄνθρωπος ἀπεσταλμένος παρὰ θεοῦ, ὄνομα αὐτῷ Ἰωάνης· 7   οὗτος
came into witness, in order that he might witness about the light, in order that all
ἦλθεν εἰς μαρτυρίαν, ἵνα μαρτυρήσῃ περὶ τοῦ φωτός, ἵνα πάντες
might believe through him. Not was that (one) the light, but in order that he might witness
πιστεύσωσιν δι’ αὐτοῦ. 8   οὐκ ἦν ἐκεῖνος τὸ φῶς, ἀλλ’ ἵνα μαρτυρήσῃ
about the light.
περὶ τοῦ φωτός.

Was the light the true which is enlightening every man coming into the
9   ῏Ην τὸ φῶς τὸ ἀληθινὸν ὃ φωτίζει πάντα ἄνθρωπον ἐρχόμενον εἰς τὸν
world. In the world he was, and the world through him came to be, and the world
κόσμον. 10   ἐν τῷ κόσμῳ ἦν, καὶ ὁ κόσμος δι’ αὐτοῦ ἐγένετο, καὶ ὁ κόσμος
him not knew. Into the own (things) he came, and the own (ones) him not took alongside.
αὐτὸν οὐκ ἔγνω. 11   Εἰς τὰ ἴδια ἦλθεν, καὶ οἱ ἴδιοι αὐτὸν οὐ παρέλαβον. 12
As many as but took him, he gave to them authority children of God to become, to the (ones)
  ὅσοι δὲ ἔλαβον αὐτόν, ἔδωκεν αὐτοῖς ἐξουσίαν τέκνα θεοῦ γενέσθαι, τοῖς

believing into the name of him, who not out of bloods nor out of will
πιστεύουσιν εἰς τὸ ὄνομα αὐτοῦ, 13   οἳ οὐκ ἐξ αἱμάτων οὐδὲ ἐκ θελήματος
of flesh nor out of will of male person but out of God were generated.
σαρκὸς οὐδὲ ἐκ θελήματος ἀνδρὸς ἀλλ’ ἐκ θεοῦ ἐγεννήθησαν.

And the Word flesh became and tented in us, and we viewed the glory
14   Καὶ ὁ λόγος σὰρξ ἐγένετο καὶ ἐσκήνωσεν ἐν ἡμῖν, καὶ ἐθεασάμεθα τὴν δόξαν
of him, glory as of only-begotten (one) beside of father, full of undeserved kindness and
αὐτοῦ, δόξαν ὡς μονογενοῦς παρὰ πατρός, πλήρης χάριτος καὶ
truth; John is witnessing about him and he has cried out saying— this (one) was
ἀληθείας· 15   Ἰωάνης μαρτυρεῖ περὶ αὐτοῦ καὶ κέκραγεν λέγων— οὗτος ἦν
the (one) having said— The (one) behind me coming in front of me has come to be, because
ὁ εἰπών— Ὁ ὀπίσω μου ἐρχόμενος ἔμπροσθέν μου γέγονεν, ὅτι
first of me he was; because out of the fullness of him we all received, and
πρῶτός μου ἦν· 16   ὅτι ἐκ τοῦ πληρώματος αὐτοῦ ἡμεῖς πάντες ἐλάβομεν, καὶ
undeserved kindness instead of undeserved kindness; because the law through Moses
χάριν ἀντὶ χάριτος· 17   ὅτι ὁ νόμος διὰ Μωυσέως
was given, the undeserved kindness and the truth through Jesus Christ came to be. God
ἐδόθη, ἡ χάρις καὶ ἡ ἀλήθεια διὰ Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ ἐγένετο. 18   θεὸν
no one has seen at any time; only-begotten god the (one) being into the bosom of the Father
οὐδεὶς ἑώρακεν πώποτε· μονογενὴς θεὸς ὁ ὢν εἰς τὸν κόλπον τοῦ πατρὸς
that (one) explained.
ἐκεῖνος ἐξηγήσατο.

And this is the witness of the John when sent forth toward him the
19   Καὶ αὕτη ἐστὶν ἡ μαρτυρία τοῦ Ἰωάνου ὅτε ἀπέστειλαν πρὸς αὐτὸν οἱ
Jews out of Jerusalem priests and Levites in order that they might question him You who
Ἰουδαῖοι ἐξ Ἰεροσολύμων ἱερεῖς καὶ Λευείτας ἵνα ἐρωτήσωσιν αὐτόν Σὺ τίς
you are? And he confessed and not he denied, and he confessed that I not am the
εἶ; 20   καὶ ὡμολόγησεν καὶ οὐκ ἠρνήσατο, καὶ ὡμολόγησεν ὅτι ᾿Εγὼ οὐκ εἰμὶ ὁ
Christ. And they questioned him What therefore? You Elijah are? And he is saying Not
χριστός. 21   καὶ ἠρώτησαν αὐτόν Τί οὖν; σὺ Ἠλείας εἶ; καὶ λέγει Οὐκ
I am. The Prophet are you? And he answered No. They said therefore to him Who are you?
εἰμί. Ὁ προφήτης εἶ σύ; καὶ ἀπεκρίθη Οὔ. 22   εἶπαν οὖν αὐτῷ Τίς εἶ;
in order that answer we might give to the (ones) having sent us; what are you saying about
ἵνα ἀπόκρισιν δῶμεν τοῖς πέμψασιν ἡμᾶς· τί λέγεις περὶ
yourself? He said I voice of (one) crying aloud in the desolate Make YOU straight the way
σεαυτοῦ; 23   ἔφη ᾿Εγὼ φωνὴ βοῶντος ἐν τῇ ἐρήμῳ Εὐθύνατε τὴν ὁδὸν
of Lord, according as said Isaiah the prophet. And having been sent forth (ones) were
Κυρίου, καθὼς εἶπεν Ἠσαίας ὁ προφήτης. 24   Καὶ ἀπεσταλμένοι ἦσαν
out of the Pharisees. And they questioned him and said to him Why therefore
ἐκ τῶν Φαρισαίων. 25   καὶ ἠρώτησαν αὐτὸν καὶ εἶπαν αὐτῷ Τί οὖν

are you baptizing if you not are the Christ nor Elijah nor The Prophet? Answered
βαπτίζεις εἰ σὺ οὐκ εἶ ὁ χριστὸς οὐδὲ Ἠλείας οὐδὲ ὁ προφήτης; 26   ἀπεκρίθη
to them the John saying I am baptizing in water; middle of YOU (one) is standing whom YOU
αὐτοῖς ὁ Ἰωάνης λέγων ᾿Εγὼ βαπτίζω ἐν ὕδατι· μέσος ὑμῶν στήκει ὃν ὑμεῖς
not have known, behind me coming (one), of whom not am I worthy in order that
οὐκ οἴδατε, 27   ὀπίσω μου ἐρχόμενος, οὗ οὐκ εἰμὶ ἐγὼ ἄξιος ἵνα
I might loose of him the lace of the sandal. These (things) in Bethany occurred
λύσω αὐτοῦ τὸν ἱμάντα τοῦ ὑποδήματος. 28   Ταῦτα ἐν Βηθανίᾳ ἐγένετο
other side of the Jordan, where was the John baptizing.
πέραν τοῦ Ἰορδάνου, ὅπου ἦν ὁ Ἰωάνης βαπτίζων.

To the morrow he is looking at the Jesus coming toward him, and he is saying See
29   Τῇ ἐπαύριον βλέπει τὸν Ἰησοῦν ἐρχόμενον πρὸς αὐτόν, καὶ λέγει Ἴδε
the Lamb of the God the (one) lifting up the sin of the world. This (one) is over
ὁ ἀμνὸς τοῦ θεοῦ ὁ αἴρων τὴν ἁμαρτίαν τοῦ κόσμου. 30   οὗτός ἐστιν ὑπὲρ
whom I said Behind me is coming male person who in front of me has come to be, because
οὗ ἐγὼ εἶπον Ὀπίσω μου ἔρχεται ἀνὴρ ὃς ἔμπροσθέν μου γέγονεν, ὅτι
first of me he was; and I not had known him, but in order that he might be manifested
πρῶτός μου ἦν· 31   κἀγὼ οὐκ ᾔδειν αὐτόν, ἀλλ’ ἵνα φανερωθῇ
to the Israel through this (thing) came I in water baptizing. And witnessed John
τῷ Ἰσραὴλ διὰ τοῦτο ἦλθον ἐγὼ ἐν ὕδατι βαπτίζων. 32   Καὶ ἐμαρτύρησεν Ἰωάνης
saying that I have viewed the spirit descending as dove out of heaven, and it remained
λέγων ὅτι Τεθέαμαι τὸ πνεῦμα καταβαῖνον ὡς περιστερὰν ἐξ οὐρανοῦ, καὶ ἔμεινεν
upon him; and I not had known him, but the (one) having sent me to be baptizing in
ἐπ’ αὐτόν· 33   κἀγὼ οὐκ ᾔδειν αὐτόν, ἀλλ’ ὁ πέμψας με βαπτίζειν ἐν
water that (one) to me said Upon whom likely you might see the spirit descending and remaining
ὕδατι ἐκεῖνός μοι εἶπεν ᾿Εφ’ ὃν ἂν ἴδῃς τὸ πνεῦμα καταβαῖνον καὶ μένον
upon him, this (one) is the (one) baptizing in spirit holy; and I have seen, and
ἐπ’ αὐτόν, οὗτός ἐστιν ὁ βαπτίζων ἐν πνεύματι ἁγίῳ· 34   κἀγὼ ἑώρακα, καὶ
I have borne witness that this (one) is the Son of the God.
μεμαρτύρηκα ὅτι οὗτός ἐστιν ὁ υἱὸς τοῦ θεοῦ.

To the morrow again had stood John and out of the disciples of him two, and
35   Τῇ ἐπαύριον πάλιν ἱστήκει Ἰωάνης καὶ ἐκ τῶν μαθητῶν αὐτοῦ δύο, 36   καὶ
having looked on to the Jesus walking about he is saying See the Lamb of the God. And
ἐμβλέψας τῷ Ἰησοῦ περιπατοῦντι λέγει Ἴδε ὁ ἀμνὸς τοῦ θεοῦ. 37   καὶ
heard the two disciples of him speaking and they followed to the Jesus. Having turned
ἤκουσαν οἱ δύο μαθηταὶ αὐτοῦ λαλοῦντος καὶ ἠκολούθησαν τῷ Ἰησοῦ. 38   στραφεὶς
but the Jesus and having viewed them following he is saying to them What
δὲ ὁ Ἰησοῦς καὶ θεασάμενος αὐτοὺς ἀκολουθοῦντας λέγει αὐτοῖς Τί
are seeking YOU? The (ones) but said to him Rabbi, which is being said being translated
ζητεῖτε; οἱ δὲ εἶπαν αὐτῷ Ῥαββεί, ὃ λέγεται μεθερμηνευόμενον

Teacher, where are you remaining? He is saying to them Be YOU coming and YOU will see. They came
Διδάσκαλε, ποῦ μένεις; 39   λέγει αὐτοῖς Ἔρχεσθε καὶ ὄψεσθε. ἦλθαν
therefore and saw where he is remaining, and beside him they remained the day that;
οὖν καὶ εἶδαν ποῦ μένει, καὶ παρ’ αὐτῷ ἔμειναν τὴν ἡμέραν ἐκείνην·
hour was as tenth. Was Andrew the brother of Simon Peter one out of the two
ὥρα ἦν ὡς δεκάτη. 40   ῏Ην ᾿Ανδρέας ὁ ἀδελφὸς Σίμωνος Πέτρου εἷς ἐκ τῶν δύο
the (ones) having heard beside of John and having followed to him; he is finding this (one)
τῶν ἀκουσάντων παρὰ Ἰωάνου καὶ ἀκολουθησάντων αὐτῷ· 41   εὑρίσκει οὗτος
first the brother the own Simon and he is saying to him We have found the Messiah
πρῶτον τὸν ἀδελφὸν τὸν ἴδιον Σίμωνα καὶ λέγει αὐτῷ Εὑρήκαμεν τὸν Μεσσίαν
which is being translated Christ. He led him toward the Jesus.
ὅ ἐστιν μεθερμηνευόμενον Χριστός. 42   ἤγαγεν αὐτὸν πρὸς τὸν Ἰησοῦν.
Having looked on to him the Jesus said You are Simon the son of John, you will be called
ἐμβλέψας αὐτῷ ὁ Ἰησοῦς εἶπεν Σὺ εἶ Σίμων ὁ υἱὸς Ἰωάνου, σὺ κληθήσῃ
Cephas which is being translated Peter.
Κηφᾶς ὃ ἑρμηνεύεται Πέτρος.

To the morrow he willed to go out into the Galilee. And he is finding Philip and
43   Τῇ ἐπαύριον ἠθέλησεν ἐξελθεῖν εἰς τὴν Γαλιλαίαν. καὶ εὑρίσκει Φίλιππον καὶ
is saying to him the Jesus Be following to me. Was but the Philip from Bethsaida, out of
λέγει αὐτῷ ὁ Ἰησοῦς ᾿Ακολούθει μοι. 44   ἦν δὲ ὁ Φίλιππος ἀπὸ Βηθσαιδά, ἐκ
the city of Andrew and of Peter. He is finding Philip the Nathanael and he is saying
τῆς πόλεως ᾿Ανδρέου καὶ Πέτρου. 45   εὑρίσκει Φίλιππος τὸν Ναθαναὴλ καὶ λέγει
to him Whom wrote Moses in the Law and the Prophets we have found, Jesus son
αὐτῷ Ὃν ἔγραψεν Μωυσῆς ἐν τῷ νόμῳ καὶ οἱ προφῆται εὑρήκαμεν, Ἰησοῦν υἱὸν
of the Joseph the (one) from Nazareth. And said to him Nathanael Out of Nazareth is able
τοῦ Ἰωσὴφ τὸν ἀπὸ Ναζαρέτ. 46   καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῷ Ναθαναήλ ᾿Εκ Ναζαρὲτ δύναταί
anything good to be? He is saying to him the Philip Be coming and see. Saw Jesus
τι ἀγαθὸν εἶναι; λέγει αὐτῷ ὁ Φίλιππος Ἔρχου καὶ ἴδε. 47   εἶδεν Ἰησοῦς
the Nathanael coming toward him and he is saying about him See truly Israelite
τὸν Ναθαναὴλ ἐρχόμενον πρὸς αὐτὸν καὶ λέγει περὶ αὐτοῦ Ἴδε ἀληθῶς Ἰσραηλείτης
in whom deceit not is. Is saying to him Nathanael Where from me are you knowing?
ἐν ᾧ δόλος οὐκ ἔστιν. 48   λέγει αὐτῷ Ναθαναήλ Πόθεν με γινώσκεις;
Answered Jesus and said to him Before the you Philip to sound being under the fig tree
ἀπεκρίθη Ἰησοῦς καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῷ Πρὸ τοῦ σε Φίλιππον φωνῆσαι ὄντα ὑπὸ τὴν συκῆν
I saw you. Answered to him Nathanael Rabbi, you are the Son of the God, you King
εἶδόν σε. 49   ἀπεκρίθη αὐτῷ Ναθαναήλ Ῥαββεί, σὺ εἶ ὁ υἱὸς τοῦ θεοῦ, σὺ βασιλεὺς
are of the Israel. Answered Jesus and said to him Because I said to you that I saw you
εἶ τοῦ Ἰσραήλ. 50   ἀπεκρίθη Ἰησοῦς καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῷ Ὅτι εἶπόν σοι ὅτι εἶδόν σε
down under the fig tree are you believing? Greater (ones) of these (things) you will see. And
ὑποκάτω τῆς συκῆς πιστεύεις; μείζω τούτων ὄψῃ. 51   καὶ

he is saying to him Amen amen I am saying to YOU, YOU will see the heaven having been opened and
λέγει αὐτῷ ᾿Αμὴν ἀμὴν λέγω ὑμῖν, ὄψεσθε τὸν οὐρανὸν ἀνεῳγότα καὶ
the angels of the God ascending and descending upon the Son of the man.
τοὺς ἀγγέλους τοῦ θεοῦ ἀναβαίνοντας καὶ καταβαίνοντας ἐπὶ τὸν υἱὸν τοῦ ἀνθρώπου.
