Torch Times

October 10, 2019

Dear Parents,

Can you believe that it’s the end of the first quarter already? I look forward to discussing your
child’s progress with you during Conference Week. Please keep in mind that we have a tight
schedule of back to back sessions each day.

For the second quarter, please encourage your child to read independently each night for 30
minutes. I will be assigning reading passages from texts this quarter as well. You can see your
child's grades using ParentVue: https://parentvue.cobbk12.org/ If you need to sign up, have the
enrolling parent bring their ID to the front office and they will help you set that up.

I would like to encourage all students to participate in the PTA Reflections program! More
information can be found on the Due West website. https://www.duewestes.com/

Please look at what we have been learning so far:

Math: We just finished learning how to find the perimeter of rectangles including rectilinear
figures with missing sides, and practicing solving multiple step word problems. The students should
be writing an equation with a variable and an answer statement written in a complete sentence. They
should also get into the habit of checking the reasonableness of their answers.

Coming up in Math: Multiplicative comparison (6 is 2 times as much as 3), Solving multi-step

problems using the four operations, Using estimation to solve multiplication problems, Multiplying
with properties of multiplication, area models, or partial products, Finding factors and multiples of
numbers through 100, and Identifying prime and composite numbers. The students are encouraged
to practice their math fact fluency using Xtramath.org at home and at school.

On the Weebly Parent Resources tab on http://mrstorch.weebly.com/ you can find wonderful
parent math videos for the first and second quarters as well as downloadable information sheets.
We will be learning about different multiplication strategies that you may not be familiar with. I
would be happy to print them for you if you don’t have access, just let me know.

Social Studies: We are learning about the causes leading up to the Revolutionary War. Our field trip
to the Youth Museum was a great introduction!
Science: We are discussing how to create a model that would help explain why daylight hours change
over the year. We will learn about planets and stars next.

Language Arts: We will focus on reading informational text, vocabulary development, fluency,
complete sentences, prepositional phrases, and poetry too. We will do some research for an
informational writing this quarter as well.

Teamwork: We’re focusing on how to be prepared for class, how to transition quickly, how to solve
problems in various ways, and how to recognize good character traits in others.
