BELOW ARE THE HUMA PRELIM EXAM POINTERS.

YOU CAN PREPARE AS MUCH AS YOU LIKE, BUT YOU CAN ONLY BEGIN
WRITING YOUR TEST DURING THE TEST PERIOD.

1) Watch the following videos:

2) Using concepts in the Gardner and Taylor readings, as well as from the above videos, write
about RAVEL’s Le Tombeau de Couperin (video with score). It has the following movements:

Criteria:
Use food (cooking, making, or tasting) as imagery. Draw parallel observations between food
and the Ravel Le Tombeau. Cover all concepts learned and apply them to each of the movements.
Your exam will merit points via the following:
Concepts – form, space, mass and volume, line (contour, perspective, axis line), proportion,
scale, chiaroscuro, hue, saturation, iconography, etc.
Imagery – using visual images and symbolism to help describe each perceived musical event
Parallelism – using equivalent meanings (similar to imagery)
Pretend you’re writing program notes for a concert. You are writing your draft at a coffee shop. In
other words, write in good sentences. Points will be taken off for poorly structured sentences. Do
not be poetic for its own sake; your writing should always be with substance!
For the musical part, use the following vocabulary:
Phrase (4-bar or irregular)
Harmony (chords, harmonic progression, balance)
Melody (pitch, theme, line, conjunct, disjunct, contour, skips, steps, intervals)
Tempo (fast, slow, moving, no motion)
Rhythm (beat, meter, tempo, syncopation, long or short duration, accentuation)
Dynamics (loud, soft, crescendo, decrescendo)
Tone Color (register, range, instrumentation, thin, thick, warm, piercing)
Form (binary, ternary, strophic, through-composed)
Articulation (staccato, non-legato, legato)
Texture (monophonic, homophonic, polyphonic, imitation, counterpoint)
Feeling (happy, sad, despair, love, resignation, humorous)

For imagery, use FOOD, in the same way the videos talk about it.

Make sure you focus on the music of Ravel. Use the elements which you hear/perceive from it.

You will have to fill a whole test booklet.

Grade breakdown:
Proper use of Gardner and Taylor art concepts = 15
Imagery/Parallelism to food (using Gardner/Taylor and the food videos) = 10
Focus on the music of Ravel = 15
Good writing = 10
