Appendix 1 LESSON PLAN

SCHOOL OF EDUCATION

LESSON ORGANISATION

Year Level: 5 Time: 60 minutes Date: Students’ Prior Knowledge:

- Define a sequence of steps to design a solution
Learning Area: Design Technology for a given task.
- Identify and choose appropriate resources from
a given set

Strand/Topic from the Australian Curriculum

- Identify available resources (WATPPS28)

- Develop and communicate alternative solutions,

and follow design ideas, using annotated diagrams,
storyboards and appropriate technical terms
(WATPPS29)

General Capabilities (that may potentially be covered in the lesson)

Cross-curriculum priorities (may be addressed in the lesson)
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Asia and Australia’s engagement Sustainability
Islander histories and cultures with Asia
Proficiencies:(Mathematics only)
Lesson Objectives (i.e. anticipated outcomes of this lesson, in point form beginning with an action verb)

As a result of this lesson, students will be able to:

• Design a roof following success criteria
• Create a list of materials required for their roof design

Teacher’s Prior Preparation/Organisation: Provision for students at educational risk:

- Have the timeline created in previous lesson Weaker students are able to have a roof design in front
- Have an example of a diagram of them, and are able to brainstorm with another
- Blank paper student over materials that they could use.
- Spare pencils, erasers and rulers
- Image of a roof design Stronger students are encouraged to collaborate once
- Design Brief they have finished their draft copy and see where they
- Lego can improve their design, or if there is any new ideas
- Lined paper they want to add to it.
- Design brief folders
LESSON EVALUATION (to be completed AFTER the lesson)

1
Assessment of Lesson Objective and Suggestions for Improvement:

Teacher self-reflection and self-evaluation:

[OFFICIAL USE ONLY] Comments by classroom teacher, HOPP, supervisor:

LESSON DELIVERY (attach worksheets, examples, marking key, etc, as relevant)

Time Motivation and Introduction:
Align these with the
Have students sitting at their desks.
9:00 segment where they
1. Review previous lesson by re reading the design brief. Ask students:
will be introduced.
a. What was the problem?
Design Brief
b. What where some of the limits we came up with last lesson?
i. Recycled materials
ii. Size of house
c. What was the first step we came up with for solving this?
2. Look at the timeline that was created in the previous lesson by the
class, and remind students that this will tell us what we are doing each
lesson.
3. Write the word materials on the board and ask students ‘what are some
materials that we through out every day that could possibly be used to
construct our rooves from’ writing students answers on the board. Ask
students what would happened if we used recycled materials? How
would it influence the environment and the animals within the
9:10 environment?
Lesson Steps (Lesson content, structure, strategies & Key Questions):
1. Hand out blank paper to students and instruct them to get out a lead
Blank paper
pencil, ruler and eraser.
2. Project an image of a roof design onto the board, instruct students that
they will be starting their designs today. Have students discuss with
Roof design images
their partner for 30 seconds what are some of the things they notice
about this roof design and why having a design is important.
3. Tell students that when designing our rooves they must:
a. Have straight lines from a ruler
b. Be done lightly, so they can be erased if necessary
c. Are measured, not eye-balled
4. Write these specifications on the board as they are being said.
5. Tell students that the reason there are so many ‘beams’ is because they
support the weight of the roof, whilst also making sure it is stable, so
that if any strong gusts of wind come through it will be fine.
6. Refer to the example roof diagram and tell students they are to draw a
beam plan and birds eye view plan of the roof they want to make,
9:17 including the measurements and what each part will be made out of,

2
remembering that we are using recyclable material. It is ok to make
mistakes and to erase things as this is a draft copy, once finished the
draft it must be approved by the teacher before you move on to the
good copy.
a. If students want to visualise the dimensions of their roof they
can spend 5 minutes using lego to ‘build’ their roof and decide Lego
if it needs any changing.
7. When checking students draft copies make sure they have used a ruler
and measured when drawing. The good copy is to be done as neatly as Assessment sheet
possible.
8. Students can trace their drafts to create a good copy. When labelling
the materials students are to: Blank paper
a. rule a straight line to the label,
b. when writing measurements they are too put two arrows on
either side of the measurement to signal the length of the entire
thing (point on example to demonstrate)
9. On a separate piece of paper students are to write two lists of materials, Lined paper
ones that are recycled and ‘new’ materials that they plan on using.
10. When finished students are to place their diagrams into their design
brief folders. Design brief folders
9:50
Lesson Closure:(Review lesson objectives with students)
1. Ask if any students want to show their design and talk about it.
2. Discuss why we need a design to follow
3. Discuss what materials people have chosen to use and why.
Transition: (What needs to happen prior to the next lesson?)
10:00
Review students design briefs, taking anecdotal notes on students who have not
finished.
Collaborate students materials list and send a message home in the newsletter
with the list of materials students need and continuing collecting resources.

Assessment: (Were the lesson objectives met? How will these be judged?)
Use marking key to assess students designs and their materials lists.
