Part C: Sustainability Cross Curriculum Priority (250 words)

Sustainability is when “patterns of living meet the needs of the present without

compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs” (Australian

Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority 2012, para. 2). There is a strong

emphasis on educating children in schools today about the impact we have on the

earth. Children must develop an interest to contribute to a more sustainable

lifestyle. Educators can further support this within their classroom by providing a

greater understanding around the three main concepts of sustainability; through

exploring the nature of systems in the world, allowing people to have different

views, values/social justice to be acknowledged when it comes to making more

sustainable changes and allowing students to build and think about ways in which

create an “equitable and sustainable future” (ACARA, 2012, para. 3). The organising

ideas of sustainability are split into three categories covering the systems, world

view, and the future. Build a honeybee hotel incorporates sustainability by using

sustainable resources to build the design and recognising the importance of living

things in a healthy ecosystem. Throughout the design, brief students will develop

knowledge, skills, and understanding of how simple changes can have a large

impact on our ecosystems. Through the sustainable development goal 15, build a

honeybee hotel strongly focuses on putting a stop to the loss of biodiversity on

earth. Designing a honeybee hotel allows students to be creative, innovative,

imaginative and flexible allowing students to be motivated and confident through

the development of critical and creative thinking (ACARA, 2012).
